Ultrascreen results
My OB's nurse called me today to tell me that my results were in the normal range for someone with my age and the info I supplied. When I was given chances on age alone, it was 1 in 176. The chances decreased to 1 in 318.
Though for most people, those numbers are terribly frightening, I am simply elated that they went up at all. I thought for sure based on the info they collected last week, that they would INCREASE. I still have some blood work to do a week from Monday for a more comprehensive picture and it still may continue to decrease or it could go the other way. Right now, I am satisfied for a woman who will be 38 at the time of delivery.
I also feel a bit more secure in my decision to have an amniocentesis. Our choice to have this test is not as easy as it may be for others. I am not frightened of the test itself, nor do I fear the risk of m/c, I was more concerned for the results. Now, I feel a bit more confident and safer that my child is ok. My doctors are not pushing us to do this at all.
I was also told that I am slightly anemic. Since gastric bypass surgery 5 and a half years ago, this has been the case. I simply do not absorb nutrients the way others do. It was suggested for me to take an iron supplement like SLOW FE but it constipates me to no end. So she said "Take Colace." Um no. I'd rather be backed up than explosive especially with the sensitive digestive/intestinal issues I have.
I contacted my surgeon who suggested Repliva 21/7 as it is easier on his gastric patients. Anyone have any experience with Repliva?
I know I can eat foods high in iron as well, but again, my capacity for food is small. I would have to eat beans, green leafy veggie and a lot of red meat more frequently in order to get in what I need. Their concern is that this is addressed now so that should I lose blood in delivery, I would not need a transfusion.
ANYWAY.... I am pretty pleased with everything so far.

Re: Ultrascreen results
i completely agree with you - i would also be relieved if my chances decreased by that much!
having an amnio is such a personal decision... i know a lot of people think that people get it to see if they want to continue with the pregnancy, when the truth is if something is wrong, most parents just want to be prepared.
lots of to you - i am sure your baby is going to be just perfect!!

Re: Ultrascreen results
that's great news..... I hope my ultrascreen results (on 3/13) turn out like that!
definitely go with what your surgeon suggests... he would know better than your OB how the meds might react with you....
and try to eat red meat when possible.
I'm so glad things look so good for you

Re: Ultrascreen results
That's great news that you got and you're right the numbers are low but they are still good for you. And it's still an excellent change of nothing being wrong.
Having an amnio is a personal choice and I would probably do the same if I were you.
As far as being anemic, my doctor has everyone take iron pills during pregnancy. She recommended Ferro Sequels. And I have to say that I am doing much better on them then I did with Slo Fe which I was on for DD. Ferro Sequels has a stool softener in it to help with constipation. Once I learned how to take it properly I haven't had any problems with it. But check with your doctor first because it does say to check with your doctor if you are pregnant.
Good luck with everything.

Re: Ultrascreen results
great news!!!!
do you have low platlets as well or jus low iron? I happen to have both. It was suggested to tkae a supplement but I chose not to. do you feel tired? I dont; so I didn't think the supplement was necessary. The dr. is fne with me not taking extra iron.
However, due to my love platelets they fear me losing a lot of blood too.
We can talk tomorrow about it!!!

I would imagine that my platelets are ok.The only thing they spoke to me about was iron. Its purely diet related. I have not been able to donate blood since my surgery. I get tired, but I just finished my first trimester so we will see if my energy picks up a lil bit.

Re: Ultrascreen results
I opted against the amnio after my ultrascreen cuz my chances of DS/SB went from 1 in 150 to 1 in 2000. I wasn't real keen on the amnio anyway, so that made my final decison easy.

I probably would have done the same with those numbers as well. DH and I have decided that for us, the amnio is necessary. It was a hard decision to make and there are multiple factors that went into it. Some are obvious. Others, not so much.

Great news!
FYI... the colace does not give "explosive" poopies. It's not a laxative. It's a stool softener. It just make it "easier".....WAY TMI I know!!!

Re: Ultrascreen results
All Colace does is softens the stool...it doesnt cause the runs or painful bowel movements...the iron causes the poop to be rather hard and it could be painful while going #2...Colace will make it softer and easier to go...oh the joys of pregnancy...
So happy all is well

Re: Ultrascreen results
glad to hear that your results were in the normal range. i totally understand the hard decision u and your dh had to make with the amnio. i had an amnio earlier this month due to my being over 35. the amnio itself wasnt so scary, but waiting the 10-111 days for the results had me on pins and needles. we were so relieved that everything came back normal. good luck with your amnio when u have it, hope all goes well

Under normal circumstances, I would deal with it. But my stomach is about the size of 2 big walnuts and my intestines are much shorter and (that is the bypass). As a result, I have been at the mercy of my digestive system. There are certain foods I cannot tolerate. I have to chew everything until it is basically pulverized. Crunchy things i can eat, sinewy things are a nightmare. Pastas ball up and solidify making it hard.
I also cannot take certain medications as they could cause an upset stomach. Aspirin is a no-no as is Advil. My surgeon said that maany of his patients did well with this Repliva so I hope my OB will support it and write me a scrip.
