Re: Ultrascreen
We did it! It was a sono and a finger prick blood test. My insurance did cover it. I got some really great pics of the baby and thankfully good results!!!
We opted to take every test offered (except an amino). I'd rather know and be prepared if there is a chance something could be wrong with the baby. I would only do the amino if the ultrascreen or AFP results (which is a blood test done around 18 weeks) came back questionable.
Thankfully both came back fine!

Re: Ultrascreen
This is another post that is going to be a personal decision but I will tell you why I personally opted for it...I didnt want to wonder or be surprised if there was in fact a problem. When you hear everythings OK you are like flabbergasted! Best news you could ever hear. Me personally, I couldnt have made 40 weeks without knowing but that is just me. I totally understand both sides to why you should or shouldnt but the ultrascreen is not harmful to the baby at all. If you were to ask me about doing an amnio I would have to give more thought into it but I'd probably do that as well if you had to.

I agree.
We opted for all the tests as well- and while waiting for the ultrascreen results were terribly hard- i was happy that we did it and heard the "everything's fine"

i think the doctor said they take a measurement of some area of the babys neck and then use it with your blood test to work out some kind of comparison...

The ultrascreen is done using a stronger machine than the one's done in your doctors office. They actually zoom in on the baby and measure the nose and neck. If the nose and neck aren't measuring as normal it COULD be an indication of Down's. They actually factor in your age, how far along you are, something in your blood and the measurements to give you a probability of your baby having downs. Even if your results come back negative or positive nothing is guaranteed.
The test is usually done at the end of your first trimester (I think between 11 -13 weeks.)

Re: Ultrascreen
I had it done when I was pregnant. It is done before 13 weeks. It was covered by insurance and gave me another opportunity to see my little one. They take measurements of the thickness of the folds of the neck and do a finger prick.

Re: Ultrascreen
I did it and I'm glad, even though the lab work wasn't covered by my insurance . It's a detailed ultrasound combined with a blood test. I took it b/c I knew I would be taking the AFP test at around 16 weeks and the ultrascreen has a lower rate of false positives -- although both tests can give false positives and false negatives. My favorite thing about the test was getting see and keep some great pictures of .

I agree totally with what Jodi said here.. and we did the same as far as testing goes for our little one
It's an entirely personal decision however, so you need to make the best choice between your DH and yourself on what types of testing you'd prefer to have..
Good Luck!

thank you! i just wanted to make sure i was thinking of the right thing. we didnt do it - we decided against it. but i can totally see why a lot of people have it. The dr actually told us that b/c i'm only 25 they usually dont push for any of the extra screening so we didnt - i hope we made the right decision

I'm actually going today to have mine done. My husband and I feel that with all the technology out there that can possible detect problems or give reinsurance, that we should take advantage of them and know what is in store for us.

Me too. My dr. recommended it because I'm 35 and, because it was a non-invasive test, I decided to follow his recommendation. It was fun seeing the little one for an extended period of time.

Re: Ultrascreen
We did, I had to pay a small amount of the lab work towards my deductible.
I kept DH in the dark though. I took the test, I did not want us sitting around all week talking about it and waiting. He knew it was coming up, but did not know when.
