UGH Lirr.. service suspended on babylon branch.
I was just about to slip into some sweats and my son was all bathed and in his pj's. I was about to start story time and I was expecting my husband to walk in the door any minute. Then I get the call.... Oh well.. Of to Hicksville to pick him up.
Does anyone know what the police activity at Bellmore is? I will find out when I drive him to pick up his car after I get him, I guess.

Re: UGH Lirr.. service suspended on babylon branch.
There was debris on the track between Bellmore and Wantagh. There was a person running on the tracks between the stuck train and the Bellmore train station.. Never heard anything about a person struck by a train. I was on Sunrise Highway when I noticed 100's of people walking from the Merrick Station to their cars at the Bellmore station. That is where I saw the stuck train and person running on the tracks.

WHAT? Who runs on the tracks.
I heard three stories.
A jumper
A bank robbery and someone was on the tracks running
Debris.

And there will probably never be a straight answer. Explains why my train was so packed tonight -- people taking anything to get as close to home as possible.

UGH Lirr.. service suspended on babylon branch.
The Long Island Rail Road Thursday evening cut power on the Babylon Branch after a train was halted because it appeared to have hit debris and about 10 passengers climbed out on the tracks, said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Cancellations and delays stretched as long as 90 minutes, partly because the train crew's investigation was complicated by the riders who ignored safety rules, Salvatore Arena said by email.
Shortly after 6 p.m., the 5:13 p.m. eastbound train to Babylon evidently ran into an "unknown object," Arena said. The train crew stopped it about 1,000 feet from the Bellmore Station platform.
The crew contacted MTA police and went out to search for debris but none was found.
Crew members kept passengers informed while the search was conducted, the spokesman said. But 10 passengers left the train, headed for the platform.
"As a result, the LIRR cut power and was ultimately forced to suspend service between Jamaica and Babylon as Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police attempted to round up the customers and make sure they were safely off the tracks," his statement said.
The railroad, via social media and its website, at about 6:50 p.m. said service was suspended in both directions between Jamaica and Babylon due to police activity.
The power was turned back on at about 7:38 p.m., allowing the train that was stopped just east of the station to resume running, about 110 minutes late, he said.
The delays cascaded through parts of the system.
"Other trains were similarly delayed and the LIRR was forced to cancel trains at Jamaica and Pennsylvania Station that were unable to proceed east during the incident," the spokesman said.
Trains on other branches also were delayed because service was suspended all the way to Jamaica.
His statement, sent shortly after 9 p.m., added: "Residual delays continue on the Babylon Branch."

My DH takes the LIRR to Merrick. His train was delayed outside Jamaica for a while, then they pulled into Jamaica and cancelled it there. I also had to pick him up in Hicksville, and then drive to Merrick for his car. So frustrating.

While I don't condone the people walking on the tracks, maybe if the LIRR had their sh@t together and didn't have a delay every other day people wouldn't be so quick to do this.

UGH Lirr.. service suspended on babylon branch.
I take the 5:13 train everyday and was on it last night! We stopped before Bellmore b/c we hit something and at first they said Debris. We were stuck for a bit so people started to go between cars and jump out. They had to turn off all the power due to the third rail so nobody got electrocuted who was jumping off the train! Real morons if you ask me! Someone on my train was speaking to her husband who is a fireman and he confirmed to her that it was a jumper. I don't know for sure that it was but I think so! The MTA police and ambulances would not have been called if it was just Debris. I cannot complain as much as I wanted to get home to my 2 year old son someone may have committed suicide and that is just awful!

IMO they should have left that 3rd rail electrified and let those assholess who jumped off the train take their chances! You want to jump off the train - fine- do so at your own risk!

Seriously--I guess none of them went to LI elementary schools back in the 80s. That " don't touch the 3rd rail" filmstrip they showed us scarred me for life!

Arrested yes they should have been but I don't think they should have left the 3rd rail on that's a bit harsh.

I was just going to mention that 80's filmstrip! I never forgot it either. Yesterday was hot.... maybe when the power was off they had to open doors to get air?

Exactly. The LIRR is a complete disaster. These people just want to get home. I also heard it was much more than 10 people.

If you are walking on train tracks, aren't you taking a risk? Don't most adults know you shouldn't do things like that and you can get electrocuted? It's not like these people accidentally fell off the platform onto the tracks. That's the problem in this world- people are stupid and selfish and don't expect any consequences. No. No accountability.

Re: UGH Lirr.. service suspended on babylon branch.
I was also on the 5:13 train last night. I think it's unfair that the LIRR is placing any blame for the delay on the passengers who decided to abandon ship. People didn't start to climb out until we had been stuck for over an hour, and while it was really stupid that they would do something so dangerous, we were so close to the station, (I was in one of the last cars and we were in the parking lot of the station) that it's not like they had to walk very far... also, they didn't have to walk directly on the tracks as there is plenty of space beside the train to walk... like a dirt/grass path that is the width of a NYC sidewalk. The LIRR is a joke, and will look to place blame for their inefficiency on anyone and anything. The train finally started to move just before 8:00, and would have done so at about the same time regardless of whether people had climbed out an hour before.

No, because then there would have been even more delays!
seriously, no matter what really happened, the LIRR is partly to blame for what those commuters did. Getting off the train like that was stupid, and selfish, yes. But this was seriously the 4th or 5th delay on the LIRR in as many days. How many 'problems' do commuters have to deal with before some frustrated commuter does something even worse and causes more problems? We're late getting home to pick up our DC more often than not these days, late to appts, late to work etc. all because of signal problems, debris on tracks, broken rails - you name it.

Trust me I know. I am with you 100%. I have been subject to insane delays and I HATE the LIRR. Truly. One night, and it was late because I had a work event, we stopped in Farmingdale and were told that there was a derailed train in front of us and we would be facing delays of SEVERAL hours. This was like 930 at night. I ran out and got one of the last cabs there. It was a mess. I do understand the frustration.
