TWO baby showers?

HI there,

We just got another invitation to my DH's cousin in Florida for her baby shower. She is having a boy and had a girl a little over a year ago. She had a shower for the girl too....is it common to have a baby shower for each kid?
DH and I kind of looked at each other and shrugged...thanks..

IMO, I think every baby deserves to be celebrated.

However, I would only allow a shower to be thrown for my 2nd or 3rd children if it was just close friends or family invited. No cousins, except my one cousin who I am best friends with.

I don't think its not celebrating by not having a shower for each child...each baby gets celebrated in its own way..people always end up buying outfits, diapers etc...

I don't agree with showers for each child. I think its a lot to ask of people, especially if you come from a large family like I do. The purpose of the first shower is to receive a lot of larger gifts you will use for all babies (strollers, rockers etc...). But, to each their own. I just don't like receiving an invite to a shower for someone who has had a baby the year or two prior and already had one.

Re: TWO baby showers?

I see nothing wrong with it- if you don't want to go then don't

it's a party- and I would normally have bought a gift anyway- I see it as a chance to get together and celebrate

I hate when these happy events get turned into something negative

it's a baby!

i don't really see it as being wrong... because the babies are two different sexes. she will need boy clothes and boy "things" for the second one. i would probably send a gift to the baby either way, so at least with a shower you'll get a meal and "social time" out of itChat Icon

Re: TWO baby showers?

My daughter had a shower in 2005 for her first born. She is pregnant again and due in August. Next month I am giving a party to celebrate this little one. However, it is not a shower. It is a "Pretty in Pink" party. I am only inviting close family and a few friends. The invitation specifically states that this is not a shower and no gift is necessary. I think a shower this soon after the first one is in poor taste. I know some could that this is "shower like". Maybe so, but, the first time around I, also, threw a "Celebration of the Next Generation" party. Again, no gifts were requested. I just think it is important for family to come together to celebrate a new life. That, to me, is far more important than any material gift that could be given.

I think if it is a different sex it is becoming very common to have a sprinkle which is a smaller type shower.

Re: TWO baby showers?

I understand celebrating another birth and our family would always give gifts anyway but not to the extent of our first baby shower. Seems a bit greedy.

If you register for neutral things the first time around then people wouldn't have to buy you a second gift at your second shower. Chat Icon

I've never been invited to a second shower and never heard of anyone having one. I think "sprinkles" are cute if a group of friends or family members get together and throw it for you.

Re: TWO baby showers?

is there another registry or is this just a party to celebrate the other baby? if there's no registry i dont see anything wrong with throwing a party. however, if there is another registry i feel like its inappropriate. JMO! Chat Icon

Re: TWO baby showers?

I think there are exceptions to having 2 showers. But this close together, I really don't think its appropiate.

I had 2 showers - but my children are 7 years apart. I told my mom I didn't want a second shower - but then found out I was having twins. Chat Icon

So, I was happy to have a second shower! Chat Icon

Re: TWO baby showers?

Personally, I am not a fan of baby showers in the first place. Maybe its a cultural thing. I wanted to "celebrate" my baby with friends and family after she was born. I had a naming for my daughter 2 weeks after she was born- and we celebrated her then. I had a friend who had a "baby shower" after the baby was born.

I just think its a little wierd to have a shower to celebrate the baby, and then when its born, most people have another celebration. JMO.

my friend has 3 kids and had a shower for all 3. (2 girls and a boy)

I don't have a problem with it. it's not like I wouldn't buy a baby gift anyway.

I assume you're joking about the "better have a shower" part..

There are rules it seems in some families and not others.

I have NO problem with someone throwing a little something for consecutive babies...a small get together is fine. The reregistering part for a baby only a year or two after the last shower is what gets me.

I'm sorry, I just feel, personally that one big shower is enough! I always buy something when a family member has another baby..outfits or diapers etc...but I just feel a one time shower that you register for should be IT.

Re: TWO baby showers?

Seems to be getting more popular.
When that happens to me, I just buy a new gender spefic outfit or two for the gift I do not go all out as I would for a first child.

your assumption is totally wrong. Chat Icon

actually, I HATE showers of all kinds, for myself. I like parties. I don't like events with ladies sitting around sipping tea and playing parlour games...that is not my thing.

but I DO like celebrating.

and I DON'T like judging.

I love my friends. I love my family. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the kids they bring into the world. I respect and admire the sacrifice they make, and the toll pregnancy takes on their bodies.

I understand that, especially now, having and raising a child is more expensive than ever.

I want to do all I can to help...not only financially or with gifts, but to let them know, that their ever expanding family is loved, cherished, and supported by me.

and if that means I get 87,000 shower invitations in the mail in a year, then WOO HOO!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: bottom line, I don't care how many showers they have. it doesn't bother me, at all, in any way.

Re: TWO baby showers?

in my family, we do not do it. nor does dh's family. its not written in stone somewhere, just something we don't do.

the new baby will always get gifts and people will be happy, but not in an organized fashion.

I am not judging you. I thought you were joking about saying you "better" have a shower for each child. I am still confused b.c you said my assumption was wrong...yet you said you didn't like parties for yourself.

I just don't like anyone thinking its mandatory for them to have one for each baby.

Like i said..nothing wrong with CELEBRATING. I'm all about it. And i'm very very generous when it comes to acknowleding a new life, believe me...I just don't like the idea of someone registering for EACH baby. I think it is greedy like someone else said. That is my opinion, and i am not judging.

Re: TWO baby showers?

The only time I've seen two is if the babies are really far apart in age. Otherwise I think it's overkill.

I posted this on the relationship board a while ago about my SIL and it seemed most people thought it was fine. I guess most people didn't think it was fine because only a handful of people came to her 2nd shower and many more WERE invited.
