Towns with SAHM's
This is kind of a spin-off to the post about having kid's parties during the week. A number of people said they lived in towns with lots of SAHMs. I'd love to know what town you live in? In my town, I find everyone works and there are no SAHMs anywhere.

Towns with SAHM's
I think long island in general has a fair mix. I suspect there's not any correlation between working, SAH and your town. I think it's just perception like if you SAH have 50 SAHM friends it probably seems like a lot meanwhile just as many moms are working.. same thing if you work, you may think everyone's working because you just aren't exposed.
Like I lived in LB too and thought most moms worked haha. Even while on maternity leave most kiddies were at library class with grandparents or sitters. But again, that's just my perception.
I live in Oceanside now and have no feel for the SAH or WMs. To be honest, I don't see many OS moms on any side..but probably bc I'm just not involved in any OS activities. My friends and family are all in LB and Rockville.

Re: Towns with SAHM's
I wouldn't know if there are a lot of SAHM's in my town, I don't really know many people in my area. I wonder how people know these things? I used to be home most of the week and even going to the library and parks didn't give me this type of info. Also, there aren't many moms of young kids in my neighborhood and none of my close neighbors have young kids. The moms I know of through DD's daycare all work, but they most likely would in that setting.

Towns with SAHM's
i don't know... but i live in NJ and i'm a SAHM. and while i know a few other SAHMs through DS's part-time preschool. it seems like most work. and even taking him to things during the day (library, playground, etc) it seems like so many kids are there with grandparents or sitters. even his part time preschool, its a lot of grandparents that are doing drop off and pick up. I pay attention bc we have NO family whatsoever close by---- so i'm jealous of all of the kids who get to spend time with their grandparents, and the parents that have that help close by. i think like somebody else said, its all about what your exposed to the most i think. if you're SAH it might seems like most moms SAH, if you work, it might seem like most moms work...

I'm not a SAHM and I am part of my local Moms Club. They do a decent number of Moms Night Out, which I love since I have like no friends where I live!

Towns with SAHM's
Based on the traffic I encountered during the day when I was on maternity leave, I'm fairly confident no one in my neighborhood works, male or female.

Re: Towns with SAHM's
Massapequa - a lot of SAHMs .....but I don't think there's a crazy majority, I think it's mixed.
Coming off of Daycare where everyone is a working mom, it was difficult for me to make 'friends' and the dynamic was very different when my oldest started K.
With the daycare Moms it's alot of FB groups and group text and last minute "headed to the park in an hour if anyone is free to play" - Everyone is in the same boat, running in and out the door and your conversations are expected to be short and rushed and play dates are assumed to be last minutes.
With the school age Moms it's more difficult to connect when you're not AT the school - Cub Scouts, scheduled play dates, baseball games, birthday parties - that's how I met those Moms and gradually developed friendships. I found I've had to work a bit harder for MYSELF with that crew

Same here. I'm in West Islip. It seems to be a mix to me. I am very friendly and have never had a problem making friends but I am finding it takes a lot of effort to do so in this element.

Re: Towns with SAHM's
Thanks for the responses everyone. Where I live, everywhere I go it's nannies. They are basically all friends and do everything together. I do plan to go back to work eventually, but it seems very skewed here.

Where are you? I see groups of nannies too. I think that's everywhere. I think all towns have a mix of sahm, daycare kids, nanny kids.

Hi. I made my observations based on FB moms groups and just based on the fact that my entire block is SAHM and most people I meet in town. If I bring my son to school, I see tons of moms who I assume do not work as I always see them and they are not dressed up!!! I wish there were more FTWM as I dont want my kids to be excluded when they get to elementary. I don't think the moms will include my son in play dates, etc as they won't know me from a hole in the wall. I don't get home at 4:00 pm or anything! I assume most will be busy on weekends with other things! Hopefully I am wrong as I want him to make friends!!!

Re: Towns with SAHM's
I live by Glen Cove.
My daughters started K this fall and I would say 90% of the moms are working.
On my block- 3 moms are nurses- so they're hours/days are scattered and 2 moms work from home. 2 are teachers. I notice a lot of the moms working have flexible hours / days.

Re: Towns with SAHM's
Manhasset - I would say there are a lot of SAHMs or PTWMs. Not too many FTWMs but like others have pointed out, they are not on my radar as much because I am a SAHM. Although I have to say when I did commute into the city before I had kids it was definitely predominantly men getting on and off the train here.

Re: Towns with SAHM's
Southampton town- I think there's lots of SAHMs but that's because most of my friends were SAHM, even though I work (I'm off in summers.) As DS grows older and is entering school, I am meeting many more FTWM and finding that even the SAHM are starting to work at least part time.
ETA: How I know is our neighborhood is full of kids, I've met lots of friends at library or DS's school, and also it's a really small town lol. DH grew up here and I feel like he knows 75% of the families.
