to compromise or not to compromise...

MIL wants us to go over there for lunch on Sunday to celebrate FIL's birthday. We only live like 5 mins away, and DD takes like a 2 hour nap at noon. I asked if she would be willing to do a breakfast/brunch at 10/1030 so that we can bring her home to take a nap in her crib. She responded with "we are planning a lunch. hope you can make it"

She's 10 months old and is at that point where she isn't going to just nap wherever anymore. she naps in the stroller, the car and her crib. While it's not the worst thing in the world to keep her up, I know she'll be a terror. Plus, i'm just annoyed that they are never flexible with us.

I'd go, but I'm not a nap pusher.

Even if you suck it up and go chances are she'll fall asleep in the car on the way there and you'd just end up sitting in the car with her until she wakes up. Which is actually ideal when dealing with inlaws lol. You tried and you still don't have to go lol.

I would go. I wouldn't expect them to plan a celebration around dc's nap unless you're the only ones invited. If it's nice out maybe you can walk her around the block in the stroller until she falls sleep.

This. Mainly because DD never had a nap schedule . Or any schedule at all really. I'm not big on schedules or routine.

I would go and just bring your stroller so you can push her around for a bit to fall asleep.

Same.

Will your DD fall asleep on way there? When my DD fallls asleep in the car on our way somewhere, we just transfer her to the stroller, wheel her in, and have her nap in that.

I'm no help HAHA my ILs AND my parents all live a few hours away... so just for my kids to be able to see their grandparents, their schedule gets thrown off for a few days/ nights.
so, for me, only one day of a different nap time, or having her nap in the stroller or something is like a dream LOL

Re: to compromise or not to compromise...

I envy people who don't plan around naps, because my DD is a MONSTER if she needs sleep.

I would play it by ear.

Have your DH go and meet him if the nap works out.

I figure that for a short while my dd is young, this is part of life and figuring out plans. No biggie to me. And I would understand if someone had to miss something at my house because of the same.

Do what you need to. Chat Icon

ETA: If your child would nap there then do that.

I would go. I never planned my life around naps or expected anyone else to.

and they take naps for up to 5 years or so and I was definitely not worrying about his nap schedule for that long.

And because we never worried about it he adapted.

I totally get where you are coming from, even though I never let nap schedules dictate our attendance at events. BUT, life is so short, and time with family is so precious. Your child is lucky to be able to celebrate another birthday with her grandfather. Go. If she gets crazy, leave, but don't miss it for something as insignificant (in the grand scheme of things) as nap time.

Just my opinion, of course. You have to do what's best for your family.

I am pretty strict with naps - but when we have plans to do something I just make my son nap before or after the event. I have never missed anything because of a nap schedule.

We do schedule things around naps because my son needs the routine and is a monster without it.

I would be annoyed that they are not being flexible but I would go and bring the stroller and take her for a walk around the neighborhood. Hopefully she will fall asleep and get her rest and you get a break from the in laws.

What time is lunch?

I would go, but after the nap. I also probably would try to start the day half hour earlier so I could try getting the nap in at 11:30a.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon agree with this.

IMO the worse thing you can do is revolve your life around your kids nap. If you bring them out they will get use to it either they will nap wherever or the will forgo the nap and most likely be fine. They may want to go to bed earlier but for me that's fine
