i have to strongly disagree with most posters
i was a camp counselor at a very expensive and prestigious summer camp in nassau county. i even drove a bus and picked up the kids.
do you know what they paid us?? about $1.50 an hour--BEFORE taxes were taken out (and this was only a few years ago)! that's what it came down to because they tell you when you're hired "your pay comes in tips". so i made roughly $10 before taxes each day! i depended on those $20 tips at the end of the season. and i was a junior in college, not a high school kid.
it's pretty well known in the camping world that counselors depend on their tipe (as do waitresses...and we all know what happens when we discuss waitress tipping on here). it's the same thing. so by not giving the suggested rate, you really are "screwing" the counselor who has worked very hard with your son.
and i may get flamed for this, but for people who can afford a $$$$ summer camp, they should be happy to give $10 or whatever is suggested to the counselor. these aren't professionals--most are kids or students who DEPEND on this money.
and for the record, i was never ever given less than the suggested amount, most families actually gave more.
you do what you have to do, but i want you to see how not giving that amount affects the hard working counselors
Well, I live for tips too but honestly some camps are $11K. WTH is this money for if not to pay for the people to take care of kids?
Do you realize how expensive those camps are for people? $11K-$20K for the summer.
People cannot be responsible for employees not being paid by their employers. I am not in charge of someone pay. That's what the tuition is for. Isn't it?
i wish that is what the tuition is for. the tuition does not go to the counselors. it pays for the owners to get rich as well as the upkeep and maintenance of these fancy schmancy camps.
and honestly, if you're paying 11K-20K you have money for tips. 20K can buy me a new car, forget summer camp for 2 months! that's absurd that you could spend 11K on camp but not have a few hundred for tips!
my DS will be going to the local rec center if he wants to go to camp. we can't afford even $1K for camp for a week or 2. my parents couldn't afford camp so we went to the park and had a great time...and didn't have to tip anyone!

i wouldnt stress too much! they will be getting tips from all the other kids too.
honestly, yes these counselors are young and can use the money but as adult you have alot more expenses then they do right now! they have to be appreciative with whatever they get. i am sure they are getting a regular paycheck on top of tips.. a tip is a bonus no matter how much or how little.
let the swim counselors split the $10. what are they going to do? stop you on your way out and ask for more?
dont sweat it! you already pay a fortune. just stick a thank you note with the tip and your are good to go!
hth!!!
this is just my opinion, but this is a horrible thing to say and a horrible attitude to show. these kids (many are in college!) are working hard, and to stiff them is not right. if you read the whole thread you'll see that the majority are NOT getting a regular paycheck. they make very little for the whole summer.
imagine if every parent had this attitude!

I didnt realize this is how these counslers get paid. My DS goes to camp and I do pay alot of money for it and I am not rich and I struggle to pay for it every year. I honestly can not afford to pay 400 dollars more to tip everyone for the summer.

I always thought this too - if parents are paying 20K to send their kid to camp then can't they afford an extra $100 for a tip? I also always found the parents who tipped the worst were the wealthiest.
If a kid is going to a town camp or something not crazy expensive, I would expect the tips to be less.
I think a lot of the money in tuition goes towards insurance and activities. The more expensive camps have a lot more activities besides swimming and soccer.
However, I also do think a lot of money is going into the pockets of the owner/director - not into the pockets of the counselors, thats for sure.

Re: Tipping Dilemma
I worked at a day camp throughout high school and most of college. I was not paid anywhere close to the minimum wage. The first year or two I was paid solely in tips.
The camps are able to get away with this b/c camp counselors are considered similar to waitresses. We earned our money through tips. I made much more in tips than I ever made through a camp paycheck. The camp sent the suggested tip amount in the last newsletter to parents. Most people followed the tipping suggestions and a few tipped less or nothing at all.
I've only been to a few camps, both day and sleep away, and it was always customary to tip the coounselors. I had no idea that some camps pay counselors the minimum wage.
I've never been to a specialty camp so to me that seems like a lot of people to tip. At the camps where I worked, people tipped the 3 counselors (different amounts depending on the position) and the bus driver. You need to do what you feel comfortable with, but chances are since they sent a suggested tip list that these people are basically working for tips.

i never said to stiff them. they are getting a tip. i was sensitive to the fact that the OP said that she didnt have that much money. what is she to do? beg borrow and steal to give a better tip to the counselor? people have to do what is financially comfortable for them. and yes, i am sure these counselors are working hard and deserve to be tipped. that is not the question! if these counselors don't get paid enough, then they should look for a job that will pay them a little better. part of the charm of working as a counselor is the environment, field trips and working with kids...
i was a waitress back in college, so i know what it is to be in the service industry, work my arse off and not get an adequate tip. but you know what? people tip what they can...
