Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

Ours is being done today (with any luck). We don't use our fireplace and it's brick. The mount is a tilt and our sofas are about 10' from the fireplace.

I love this..it has freed up some much room in the LR. I have a strange shaped living room.

Hey-anyone want an entertainment unit? 27" Sony Wega TV?

My living room is a nightmare. It's in two sections and I don't use one section. Here is a pic of where I'm going to hang the TV. There will be a loveseat and sofa perpendicular to each other. The chair will not stay there. The entertainment center will be sold and that's where the love seat will go. The sofa will be facing the fireplace.

There's a lot of discussion in other TV realated forums regarding this. I have read posts and most say heat is not a concern. I will try and locate a thread later and post it here.

I have a 50" plasma however I do not have my TV mounted above a fireplace. The one bothersome thing from my perspective would be height of the TV. I like the TV mounted at eye level or very close to it. Having the TV mounted above a fireplace seems too high for me. I realize plasma’s are mounted in stores and restaurants this high however you’re not typically watching the TV for long periods of time.

This is why I wouldn't mount a TV over my fireplace. We are considering doing an arm-mount from the side wall.

Personally, I don't care for the look of a TV over a fireplace, it totally takes away from the fireplace to me.

I also wouldn't want to be staring up at the TV at that height.

I don't know if there is validity to the heat issue but I would defintely worry about that too.

The heat will not ruin the TV... My DH works for an AV company and is always mounting plasmas above the fireplace.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

We plan on doing this after finishing our family room. We had a mason guy come in because we want to reface our fireplace and he told me that they do them all the time and that it isn't a problem. I agree that it makes your room have more space because you don't need a entertainment center etc. We are going to have our contractor put in built ins next to our fireplace for our cable box and dvd player. I can't wait!!

I'm not sure about the heat thing, but I wouldn't do it. I think it looks so tacky - the fireplace is a focal point in the room and putting the TV there just puts even more emphasis on it. Sorry, JMO...

Sorry but Dh and I both agreed too! IMHO

This is one site that is specific to HD and all the equipment associated, TV’s etc. This isn't the site I was referring to but this one contains good information as well. The other site seems to be down right now. Take a look at this thread as well as the threads they reference within.

We have plans to do it set in picture frame moulding. I don't think it's tacky at all. You wind up gaining so much space getting rid of old entertainment type units.

I don't mind plasmas mounted on walls - I agree they free up valuable space. I just don't want to make it the focal point of my living room, which I feel mounting it over the fireplace does.

Personally I would never put a TV in my living room unless I didnt have a family room. Even then, I think I would get something that could be concealed in a piece of furniture. I just dont think a living room is really a place for a TV. Does that make sense?

I think that in a family room though, where you would expect to have a TV - it's fine above a fireplace....

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

Both TVs are up. The one over the fireplace is gorgeous! We watched for about an hr last night. Everything ok.

It's set in the picture frame moulding and tilted down. Very good visual.

We don't have a den or family room so the living room is where we entertain and watch TV and everything else!

We may put a mantle up around the fireplace to dress it up a bit. All of a sudden now I'm on a mission to finish decorating my living room.

ah yes..as soon as I can take some. The wires are not set yet since we didn't get the electrician in yet. Kind of backwards I know but it can still be done. So the wires are hanging down but soon to be fixed.

I would love to see pictures also! I have a SMALL formal living room, and a LARGE family room with fireplace and this is also where we entertain and spend all of our time. I am really considering selling the entertainment unit I bought to be able to put more furniture in the room. I could probably put another entire Sofa and 2 chairs on the wall where the entertainment center is!

Ugh - decisions!

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

My parents mounted their tv over a gas fireplace and were told that they should put up a mantle to deflect the heat. It looks great and isn't hard to watch at all.

Looks nice but up too high to view tv comfortably IMO. I would never do it.

i LOVE the look. we dont have a fireplace but I am considering a purely decorative fireplace surround so that we can mount the tv above. I would use the surround for books and frames and maybe place candles in the fireplace part.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

I don't think mounting it over the fireplace will damage the TV, as long as it is far enough away from it. I'd say at least 6 inches.

However I would never do this because the TV would be way too high. Whether it looks nice or not, the ideal position for a TV is supposed to be eye level. You shouldn't have to "look up" to watch TV. This would drive me crazy. Just my personal preference.

just and FYI-if you do this and you have a REAL fireplace (not a gas one) it usually voids the warrenty on the TV
