Those whose kids have had the bad stomach bug....questions
For anyone whose child has had the bad stomach bug recently...can you help me out.
DD (6) had simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea for 10 hours every 10-15 mins yesterday. She vomited then 3 more times 3 hours apart. She did sleep through the night. The problem is she isn't taking in much today. No solids, says ice pop, broth, pedialyte, gatoraide etc that she normally likes with a stomach bug is making her feel like she has to vomit again. She is drinking tea with lots of sugar per her ped who has been in constant touch ( we spoke hourly yesterday trying to keep her out of the ER.). He says if she is sporadically vomiting today we will have to take her to the ER for I and check her electrolytes. I need to get more into her but don't want to push it and have her vomiting again. She is usually begging for other things and food even when vomiting so this is new for me.
If your child had a bad case when were they willing to take more? I have tried bribing her with jello and her favorites. She IS drinking her tea but ped would like us to expend that to broths.

Re: Those whose kids have had the bad stomach bug....questions
My kids had it and didn't have much of an appetite for about 5 days. Honestly, I think that as long as she is getting some fluids in her and she is not dehydrated; I would let her appetite come back on it's own. I would also stay away from the hospital unless you have dehydration concerns.
My one dd has a bug that caused her to vomit most things for 4-5 days. She did take sips of liquid to keep her hydrated.

The ped was just concerned that sugar tea wasn't enough.

As long as she is peeing, she should be ok. Try some flat gingerale...

Broth is a good idea. Try Lipton soup and strain out the noodles.

Can she keep down gatoraid? I found my kids preferred that to pedialite. i only give it when they have the stomach bug because I think it has too many sugars for year round drinking. My kids like the red version.

Re: Those whose kids have had the bad stomach bug....questions
Much better but not really eating. Soup yes, gatoraide yes, but only a saltine or two. Tried pastina in soup, rice and pasta in broth too, jello, bananas nope she says it all makes her feel nauseated. HAVE to get her better before Monday she has a food challenge with chocolate. The next open appt is end of March. We wanted 6 weeks for this appt. She is struggling with this and her Christmas wish is to have chocolate at Christmas. So praying I get her eating normally tomorrow. The ped expected her to be back to normal diet by today.

Re: Those whose kids have had the bad stomach bug....questions
My DD had it. Her appetite was off for about one week. The only thing that she wanted to drink was ginger ale (never had that until now and loved it), and also drank water. I gave both room temperature. My DD vomited 3 times in one day and the vomiting stopped by the next day, but the exhaustion and lack of appetite and feeling unwell lasted for about 5 days. Hope your DD feels better soon.

Re: Those whose kids have had the bad stomach bug....questions
My 5yr old had it this week. He hadn't kept anything down for almost 12 hours. What scared me was him waking up in the morning and not wanting/needing to pee - we gave him sips of flat coke or flat ginger ale (my mom's a nurse and this is her recommendation from the ER for dehydration in children). I froze some Gatorade in ice cube trays and gave it to him as mini-slushies and I kept a close eye on how concentrated his urine was. It lasted two days and today (3rd day) he was asking for meatballs --- I'd like his stomach to rest a few more days but if he's hungry I want him to eat. Good luck - it's awful when they're sick.
