Those who give DC avacado

How much do you feed them?

I made some for DS yesterday and DH was telling me not ro give him too much. Apparently 2 tablespoons is 50 calories and 4 grams of fat Chat Icon I had no idea! DH said its really good for him but too much and he may get a belly ache. I only gave him a few spoonfuls and then some veggies.

Just thought I would share.

I also found this online

Avocados are high in fat and calories and we are often told to stay away from them due to this. A medium size avocado contains approximately 322 calories and up to 30 grams of fat - WOW. 1 cup of avocado puree contains almost 700 calories as it would take approximately 2 avocados to make a cup.
The benefits of avocados far outweigh the "risks". Avocados contain monounsaturated fats which are said to lower "bad" cholesterol and also aid in maintaining a healthy heart. Also high in fiber, avocados are great aids in reducing the risks of cancer and heart attack.

It's good fat! They need that fat at that age.. If you want to cut it down, mix it with something else.

I used to give mine avocado and banana mixed together.. DELISH!!!Chat Icon

i gave anywhere from 1-2 tablespoons, once a day, more than 3 days a week. i always mixed it with pears. the fat is actually good for them at this age.

Fat is the most important thing for brain development, don't worry so much about fat/calories at this stage Chat Icon unless you are giving french fries or something Chat Icon

Um, my son at an ENTIRE avocado by himself yesterdayChat Icon Yes, an entire oneChat Icon But as far as I'm concerned, that's fine because it's healthy fat and it's good for him.

Re: Those who give DC avacado

I can't even imagine giving my DD avocado.
It's just not something I would ever think of giving to a baby.
Maybe because I have never eaten one.
It's kind of gross to me.
I can't imagine her liking something like that.

babies need fat, I wouldn't worry about fat content, they need fat for brain development.

I worry more about processed sugar than anything else.

This is word for word what DH said to me. Chat Icon

Avocado ended up being one of DS's favorite foods. The texture is very pleasing to a baby, and its great practice to give them little cubes of it, to mash with their gums.

Hmm- interesting.
I never considered it.
I only wish Gerber made it.
I can't see myself knowing what to do with an avocado- it looks complicated.
Sort of like a Guava.
Scares me a bit...Chat Icon

Im not worried about giving him too much or about all the fat in it, I know that fat is good for him, I was just amazed at how many calories and how much fat was in one piece of fruit- crazy!! Chat Icon

I pretty much buy jar food for DS but since they dont make avacado I did it myself and there is nothing to it. I peeled it and stuck it in the maching to puree- that was it

Re: Those who give DC avacado

speaking of avacado..what the heck is the best way to store them. I made the mistake (i think) of throwing it in the fridge and when i went to make guacomole, it didnt work out so well.

so this time I kept it out on the counter and have yet to use it.

i wanted to cut it up and give DS some..what is the best way to serve this?

Re: Those who give DC avacado

Both my kids (almost 3 and almost 1) eat avacado everyday. It is good fat and good fat is great for them at their ages.

When I buy them I buy some ripe, some not so ripe. And pick the ripest one, cut in half, cube and serve. I never store it, it never lasts, whatever DS doesn't eat, I eat.

Re: Those who give DC avacado

My 6 month old loves it and eats it almost every day. If its ripe, I just scoop it out on a spoon or mash it with my fingers.
