This is the bf support I get..
So I go out to dinner with two friends the other night and this is conversation..
friend #1: So are you going to BF this one as well me: absolutely, I miss it and loved it friend #2: your going to do that crap again? your crazy, give that baby a bottle. (no exaggeration, literally her words)
and a coversation with mom:
Mom: How are you going to BF this baby with a toddler running around. You need to get some bottles ready so that someone else can help feed. Your not going to be able to take care of ds#1
Just thought I'd share so that if anyone else has family or friends like this you can relate to me and FM me anytime for support. I got the same crap from them with ds #1 and I got through it then and will do it again this time, although this time I know what to expect so it will be easier to ignore them. I guess that was more of a vent.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
I bf ds until he self weaned at 14 months. He was 21 months when dd was born. I bf her until she was 25 months and she weaned pretty much on her own. I had no problem nursing dd and taking care of ds. In fact I think it was easier. No formula to mix. No bottles to clean fill and warm. Baby is hungry take out the breast and feed. I would sit on the floor and play with ds while dd would eat. Or he would sit on the couch and read a book or watch a toy why I fed dd. Sometimes dd would cry for an extra minute or two while I got something for ds but really how different is that then dd having to wait for a bottle to warm. Just like you said ignore the negative comments. I have to say I found it much easier to nurse #2 then it was #1

Re: This is the bf support I get..
People are unbelievable! What do they care how you feed your baby? As far as your mom, nice for her to try to undermine your confidence before you get started.
I BF my DD for 13 months and plan to BF this one as well. I guess I will be neglecting my toddler too I LOVED BFing my DD and I suggest to any new mom who is thinking about it to try it for a while. I got lots of comments after DD turned 6 months, that she was too old for it I started spouting out AAP recs, and advantages. I found most people who made comments were really in the dark about the advantages.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
My sister said that boobies were for sexy time...yes she was 20 at the time yet pregnant with her own
My mom said that I needed to stop being a hero.
The ped asked if I was BF when I brought DS for his first appt and when I said yes brought out two HUGE ready to fed formula samples, "in case it doesn't work out"
The nurses at Good Sam said I should formula feed so that he gets more sleep therefore I can sleep.
The only support I got was from DH. He was awake for me in the middle of the night during feedings, cleaned pump parts, took me to the ER when I had mastitis, was my cheerleader. He knew how much I wanted this and pushed me, not pushing his wants on me but knew how much I wanted this and pushed me to succeed. I needed that because there were times when I was hard and it would be so easy to give up.
If you ever need someone to complain to, whine to, vent, scream to I'm here lol. I'm also going to be in the same boat. DS is going to be 19 months when DS#2 arrives next month and as much as I'm trying, he isn't weened yet and I'm freaking out because I don't want to nurse 2 at the same time lol.

The top part of your post makes me SO MAD! Family comments are one thing. The last thing a new mom needs is a medical professional undermining confidence! I got that from the hospital too when I delivered DD.
Then I read about your husband, and it made me all warm and fuzzy. My husband was so good about it too. He was just so proud of me. I wish all new moms got that kinda support!

Re: This is the bf support I get..
Ugh Leanne, that is total BS. I breastfed (and still am at 11 months) DD with my TWINS running around. It wasn't a problem at all. She has never had a bottle. We tried once with some pumped milk, she had no interest and we never tried again. I got no support when I said I wanted to BF the twins, told it was going to be too hard, wouldn't have enough milk, etc. and I did it for 15 months. Was told with DD2 the other 2 would be jealous, wouldn't have the time, etc. and it has been working just fine! They understand baby A drinks mommy's milk and its for babies only. I told them they had it too when they were babies. There has never been an issue.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
Some people are just nuts! I know someone who thinks BF is gross and disgusting and she refused to BF her baby , even when the baby was in intensive care and the drs almost begged her to at least try and BF for few days, just so the baby could get stronger. I could not believe when I heard, first her MIL told me but I thought she was making it up, but then this girl told me herself and she was so proud of herself for *standing up* to drs.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
Such stupid comments some people say. I BF DS and plan to do it again for DS #2. I'm really not worrying about having a hard time BF with a toddler. I actually think it will be easier. My sister did it will all three of her kids. One was EBF till a year old. She would not even take a bottle of BM. My sister tried many times with different bottles. If she can do it, I can do it.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
I'm sorry the people around you are not more supportive. I EBF DS until he self weaned at 17 months old (when I was about 4-5 months pregnant with DD). It was hard in the beginning but ended up being one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. DD is almost 3 weeks old and we had a bumpy start. Up until this week, I was on the fence about giving up. Bottle feeding just seems so much easier. Thankfully, I've had the opposite experience and have had extremely supportive friends and family. I think we've finally made some progress and feel more positive about succeeding. Yes, it can be hard BFing with a toddler but it's not impossible.
If you need someone to vent to, a cheerleader, or just want to chat feel free to FM me any time

And I got the opposite.....I tried BF and it wasn't working for me or DS and the nurses refused to bring me formula!
I get people lecturing me on how I should BF. Its my choice and my son will be perfectly healthy without breast milk. I was formula feed and I'm fine!!

Re: This is the bf support I get..
I can laugh at it now because it hasn't started in full force YET but I am the type of person that would love it more to show them wrong.. I'm sure we will be ok. My mom just sees it as struggling and being exhausted and she would like to help so I could sleep. I try to tell her over and over again that this is BF and it will get better over time. I just get more fustrated at her when she's not listening to what i'm telling her so I just ignore her now.

See that's wrong too. I wanted to nurse they should have respected my wishes and you wanted to formula feed and they should have respected yours. I can understand making a comment but once you shoot it down then that's it, they said their peace now your wishes should be granted.

Re: This is the bf support I get..
I am seriously about all the comments women have gotten on this thread. Sadly there is a lot of ignorance when it comes to bf'ing. If a mother chooses not to bf, that is fine and is her choice, but the negative and unsolicited comments from unsupportive friends and family just saddens me. I bf ds for 21 months and plan to nurse this baby as well for hopefully about the same amount of time. (BTW-it is breastmilk in the bottles in my avatar ) I was lucky and had a lot of support, especially since we hit quite a lot of bumps with bf'ing in the first few months. My suggestion is to not go to any of these people if you have any bf'ing challenges this time around. And for anyone here, please feel free to FM me with any questions or for help/support with bf'ing/pumping issues. We had just about every bf'ing issue under the sun and still had a wonderful and successful bf'ing relationship. If you feel strongly about bf'ing, then try not to worry about other people's opinions (easier said than done, of course). Good luck

Re: This is the bf support I get..
UGhhh I can relate to this post. My MIL chose not to BF her two kids and with DD1 I got zero support from her. Just the contrary I got these comments:
" I didn't brestfeed and they were fine. There is absolutely no difference"
"Is she going to get all the nutrients she needs from BM?"
When I looked tired or overwhelmed b/c I was feeding a lot she'd say
"BF moms are like a cult"
or
"those lactation consultants nazis...don't listen to them"
AND when she came over the first week she asked if she could give the baby bottles. I think a lot of her comments for selfish b/c she just wanted to feed the baby and she got annoyed at the hospital b/c I wanted to nurse in private. I am afraid this time around with DC # 2. I want to try and nurse right away and she'll make nasty comments and give me looks if I ask for 20 minutes of privacy throughout the day. My mom is a big supporter it's just unfortunate. I respect everyone's wishes to do what they feel is best for them, but no reason to flat out ignore my wishes or tell me that formula is better!

She got to make her choice with her children and YOU get to make your choice with your children. Very frustrating! Myybe your dh can ask her to refrain from any bf'ing comments?

Re: This is the bf support I get..
I EBF both my kids for 11 months, my DD was 3 when my DS was born, and I had no issues EBF him at all.
I just had my 3rd baby (a girl) in December and BF her for a week, I was sooo upset I couldn't go longer, but I had to go back on my medication and had to stop, its very weird for me to bottle feed her I hate it!
I wouldn't listen to anyone who has negitive comments about BF, they have no idea what there talking about!!
