Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!

I know for me, self esteem is not an issue. I have had large breasts my entire life (since I was 10) and now with the Gastric Bypass and losing 130 lbs, they went from double D's to extremely ugly lower C's and sometimes B's. It's a feeling of loss for me. I can't identify with my body right now.

For the tummy tuck, it's about comfort. I hate sweat (TMI) collecting under the loose skin and feeling like I look like a melted candle naked. I want to feel good in all forms of clothes.

I knew there was more to this story...Thanks GossipQueen

Donda West Warned About Surgery

TMZ has learned that just weeks before Donda West died, a plastic surgeon refused to perform procedures on her because of a health condition that could have led to a heart attack.

We've learned Dr. Andre Aboolian was set to perform a tummy tuck and breast reduction on Ms. West, but told her she need to get clearance from an internist whom Dr. Aboolian recommended. We're told West never went to that doctor, but subsequently had the procedures performed -- not by Dr. Aboolian.

Anyone who goes under plastic surgery would be sent for medical clearance by a regular internist. Why anyone would take the chance with an exixting condition, is not terribly bright. Regardless, the woman should rest in peace. I hope the world allows her family to grieve without adding this to the mix.

Now my two cents:
To those people who mention low self esteem, poor body image or desperation... Try living one day in a skin you cannot stand. It s uc k s. It doesnt matter if your husband, boyfriend, lover, friends think you are stunning, if you cannot stand the way you look and you want to do something about it - so the eff what!

Yeah, I am damn willing to take the chance. I also know the risks. I am an informed individual. After a large weight loss, I continue to feel like a work in progress. After we have had children and are in a financial situation where we can afford to do the procedures I want, they will be done.

Not true - thousands of surgeries everyday are performed on patients who were NOT previously "cleared" by an internist. MOST surgery candidates aren't. Your doc (orthopedist, plastic surgeon, vascular surgeon, etc.) is the one who determines your health for the surgery. IF there are concerns, they send you to an internist.

Good doctors will send you to an internist if there is a problem - they don't require all patients to be pre-screened when they can easily check BP, weight, etc. themselves.

My dad's surgeon refused to perform his shoulder surgery b/c of his elevated blood pressure. (This was a second surgery. He had the first one two months before). He was sent to his internist, then to a cardiologist, then to a surgeon for an angiogram, and then had open heart surgery. Thank goodness that doctor was cautious. My father likely would have died during the surgery. In fact, doctors are amazed he survived the first one... but there were no abnormal signs. In fact, his stress test was even ALMOST perfectly normal. Thank goodness he had a really anal cardiologist who sent him for the angiogram anyway. A heart attack would have been fatal.

You are right. I wrote in haste. A surgeon should ask for a history of health issues and a patient should be honest and provide that for the surgeon. This way a surgeon can make an informed decision as to whether or not a patient can be cleared. Sometimes that involves conferring with other doctors. Sometimes it doesn't.

This is what is so concerning to me..... 2 people close to me have recently been diagnosed with complicated coronary conditions.... and NEITHER of these conditions were picked up during routine testing in a cardiologist's office.... one cardiologist explained how unreliable the basic testing in the office is.... 'you could pass this stress test with flying colors, appear perfectly healthy in all these tests, and then drop dead from a heart attack a 1/2 hour later...'

While some patients diligently educate themselves with the true spectrum of risks, I think more patients expect their physicians to take care of everything, and outline all risks. Some physicians DO, but many others don't. Just like the above post explaining how not all surgeons ask for clearance from an internist.

Personally, I would never get elective surgery (I may consider reconstructive surgery if I became VERY disfigured from an illness, however). I have significant scarring on my face from a condition I had 15 years ago, and would rather walk around with my scars than gamble with whether or not they'll be improved with surgery. I realize many people would go for the surgery, but I frankly used this incident in my life to grow.... So you don't wear makeup, color your hair, style your hair?

FWIW, you can still base your self-worth on your character and accomplishments even after having cosmetic surgery...you'll just look better doing it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

very sad...

Knew there HAD to be more to the estory....it amazes me how some people try to "trick" doctors and leave out important info. So sad.

For ex, my dad wanted to get an umbilical hernia repaired, but he is a diabetic. Well his diabetes was out of control for a month or so, and with my pushing he decided to NOT get the surgery due to inability to heal when blood sugar is out of control. I don't think the drs knew his situation. Now maybe they would have picked high blood sugar up on the pretesting blood work, but maybe not...

Now I don't know if my dad was even honest with the drs, as he just wanted to "get it done". But I insisted with him to postpone the surgery and that since it was not necessary, he should not be getting it while his blood sugar was not being controlled. What made me push him and insist he not get it, even if the drs would have done it (again, I dont know if he was telling the drs the whole story)? Well I saw a story about a woman who had diabetes and decided to get a tummy tuck. What started out to be a routine procedure turned into the woman loosing both her legs due to infection and gangrene.

The patient has to SHARE all their medical info to be property treated (or not treated). Some patients just want what they want and decide to leave out inportant info. And bottom line is if you have certain medical conditions, the risks of purely cosmetic surgery should be CAREFULLY weighed.

Alright, maybe miserable was the wrong choice of word. Maybe having low self-esteem with describe it better?

I am not happy with a lot of things about my body after having 4 kids. But I would never put myself at that risk just to have the pouch of skin on my stomach or my boobs that are half the size they used to be fixed. My self-esteem isn't exactly grand either. But I would never take the risk to have surgery if I didn't absolutley have to. I have too much at risk to be that selfish and vain. Maybe if I didn't have children I would feel differently.

Not to try and start a war here but I DO NOT have a low-self esteem and I have had plastic surgery twice, with the 2nd time as recent as last week. In addition I am not big on stereo-types, classifications or being judged by anyone and both of those statements are VERY judgemental.

I am completely happy with who I am and content with the way I look, however like you, I am not satisfied with several parts of my anatomy since I had DS 3.5 years ago. The only difference is that I don't see anything wrong with a little "tweaking" or a little nip here or tuck there. to assist my body in getting back to a place where it fits my standards and I don't look in the mirror every morning wishing tummy was just a little tighter or my "girls" just a little higher. It has nothing to do with my self-esteem, nor am I miserable in any way. I just want something to look different and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get there, rather than sitting around and complaining I don't like this, ot that. IMO I am being proactive.

Let's be real here - there are risks associated with ANY surgery even if the it could save a life, it can also take one. IMO a lot of the reasons that people exoerience complications, especially with cosmetic procedures is because they DON"T follow the surgeons directions either before or after surgery. There are also other factors like pre-existing conditions ex; heart problems, thyroid problems, diabetes etc... Not to mention taking asprin or ibuprofen within 2 weeks prior to surgery (increases risk of bleeding because of blood thinning capabilities) smoking etc...
If the patient does not follow the surgeons instructions exactly, it increases the risk of complications TREMENDOUSLY.

You shouldnt be so quick to assume it is the surgery or surgeon. Most of the time it's human error or disregard.

Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!

I am completely in agreement with everyone being entitled to their own opinion and/or view on this subjest or any other for that matter. However, if you don't agree with having/getting plastic surgery that's your right and you're opinion. On the other hand, you should state your opinion with reference to yourself only, as opposed to making statements that invlove the others that either have had or will have plastic surgery at some point in their lifetime. To you, the unnecessary risk isin't worth it but to me the benefits outweigh the risks and self esteem does not even factor in my decision. Growing old gracefully doesn't mean ytou have to let yourself go either. Yes, we should be happy in the body we were given but that also does not mean we need to accept things that are not satisfactory to our personal standards!

Life without a certain degree of risk is not worth living to me!
