So are the parents of the kids from the S. more pushy, or from the E.? Chat Icon

Honestly, it doesn't really matter! All ends of the SD are good places to live in and the district itself has one of the best education systems.

And as long as our involved in your child's education, things will be fine.Chat Icon

Re: The Setaukets?

I have to say, as someone who was born in Stony Brook, grew up there, and whose parents still live there, I agree with Beth on pretty much everything she has posted. there are differences throught the 3V, but that goes for every neighborhood. I live in Yonkers now and there are tremendous differences between different parts of Yonkers. I don't consider for a second that any part of the Three Villages is "dangerous". But I do remember growing up that when people asked where you lived, they would say "do you live north of 25A or south of 25A" and I remember when my aunt was moving out here, the real estate agents used that as their #1 selling point. North of 25A is probably considered a little more desirable because it is closer to the water and the village centers (Stony Brook and Setauket). The bottom liine is the area is great for kids and if I could, I would move back in a heartbeat.

I hear what you are saying--I lived on the South Shore for a while and it was the same with South of Main Street being more desirable--but we want to stay under $500,000 which isn't that doable with a house north of 25A that is not on a Main Road that does not require a great deal of work.

Thank you all for your opinions, but I do think all of these areas will be changing, and only getting better. It may have been that the parents in S. Setauket were less educated and less apt to speak up to educators when our generation was in school, but I think as our generation moves in and starts families, things will change. I have a doctorate in education administration and would not be intimidated to complain to a school or teacher if it was appropriate. It's an excellent district, and no one will disagree about that. The opportunities for students are there, whether or not they choose to participate.

I think it is disgusting that my future children may be judged by teachers based on what street they grew up on within the district and not by their ability, but I suppose they would learn early on what the world is really like if that is the case.

I grew up in 3 Village, and so did DH... his parents still live there... I now work in the district... if i could afford to live ANYWHERE in the district, i would move back... and I did not come from a well-off family, whose parents complained and I got whatever I wanted. Although, yes that does happen- parents do have a lot of power here- but not just in 3village- other districts as well... the squeaky wheel sometimes gets the grease... it stinks, but it happens everywhere...

As someone who now works there, I can tell you that I have NEVER witnessed anyone judging kids just based on what street they grew up on within the district. In fact, i have no idea which roads belong to which area. (and i even grew up here)

I was just going to say the same about the "squeaky wheel" - I think most of the issues brought up on this thread are due to the fact that the district is huge. Kids who go there have many opportunties, but they're also in danger of being lost in the shuffle - that's when parents step in and "squeak" Chat Icon

My mom and aunts and uncle went to school there and my mom has worked in the district for 20 years.

Re: The Setaukets?

I agree that the parents who made noise did not come from one particular area. What was incredible about the school district (and hopefully still is) is that many parents were professors/instructors/graduate students at Stony Brook University and/or doctor/nurse/medical professionals at the hospital. Therefore, I think more parents than usual were very in tune with education and had high expectations for their childrens' education because the themselves were in the educational field.
