Word choice is important, so I'm glad you edited your earlier post because many people will stop reading as soon as you call them ignorant.
I edited it because honestly, I'm ignorant about most things gun related. I'm not an expert by any means. Just a regular mom who wishes guns didn't even exist. I have a basic understanding of some things gun-related only because I have dated gun collectors in the past.
I know where some of the laws fail because trying to press charges against a violent man with a huge gun collection is a scary thing. The law failed me and he kept his hunting license/guns. Another boyfriend I had back in the day made threats after we broke up. You would think they'd take away his pistol permit. Law enforcement is just that... enforcement. Meaning someone has to break the law before they can do anything. His thinly veiled threats didn't measure up to their definition of breaking the law.
Pointing out that I called people ignorant seems like a passive aggressive attempt on your part to make me look like a d*ck. We're all on the same side, I'm just trying to explain one of the problems with our side of the debate.

That gun topic
To address some things I've seen posted in this thread (forgive me for forgetting some things)
300 Million firearms are in circulation in the US today, both Legal and Illegal Any firearm in NYS that is legally purchased requires a background check and ID Not all rifles are considered assault rifles in NY (there is a list of criteria, one single criterion makes it an "assault rifle") Just because they're banned/outlawed doesn't mean that people don't still have them and own them, including high capacity magazines Australia does not have a Second Amendment, they don't have our Constitution, and they don't have a system where it is difficult to repeal Amendments. In addition, our Constitution does not allow the confiscation of such firearms or for anyone to enter our homes or persons without a search warrant, which means evidence of a crime exists.... Owning a firearm is not a crime. Bringing up Australia is a moot point. It is impossible to do here what they did in Australia without a violent uprising.

I think there is a lot of confusion here regarding the definition of semi-auto.
semi-auto means one trigger pull = one bullet
If you go to the range with a hunting rifle or a pistol, chances are it's probably semi-auto.
They cannot ban "assault rifles" without banning hunting rifles. It's the accessories and appearance that make it what we know as an "assault rifle". For example: a high powered scope, flash suppressor, collapsible stock, high capacity magazines, etc. A lot of these accessories are already illegal or regulated.
I'm tired of nothing being done too, but saying there is no reason for the average citizen to own a semi-auto rifle is just ignorant because that describes almost all hunting rifles. I think the ignorance surrounding basic gun knowledge is the reason they cannot get any laws passed. Most law-makers have never even used a gun. They use terms that don't really have any significance because real military weapons are already illegal.
My problem with this is the fact that these assault rifles have magazines which gives you 30+ Chances to make your kill. I don’t hunt, and I honestly don’t understand the intrigue of taking anyone/anything’s life, so yes I’m totally ignorant with hunting knowledge. So maybe the gun itself isn’t the problem, maybe it’s the magazine in and of itself that I don’t agree with. If you can’t make your hunting kill in 2-3 shots, then it’s possible hunting isn’t your forte (General you, not actually you). I’m ok with ammo being reloaded, I’m not ok with continued shots without reload.
Not all "assault rifles" are high-capacity. Assault rifle is a made-up term.
