Would you let your kid play at a friends house knowing they have a gun in their house?

DH and I were talking and are in total disagreement when it comes to having guns in the home. I realize for some it is part of their job but I still feel sooooo uneasy about it. I know a few people who lost their children to gun play.

Opinions?

Do you mean a police officer's house? Then I probably wouldn't have a problem b/c they are trained in how to use them.

But just an average one gun owner? I don't know. I also don' know how you would knowChat Icon Chat Icon

If I happened to find out they had one.. I would first ask were they store it and how they keep away from their children. Depending on their answer would depend on how I would handle the situation. I plan on trying to explain to my dc that guns are not toys and if they come in contact with one not to play with it and if his/her friend continues to play with it call me STAT. Then that will be the end of them playing in that house (that part I wouldnt tell them until after I got him/her home safely)

I would ask if they own one and if they did, I wouldn't let him play over there. Accidents happen and I'm not comfortable with it, unless I'm there.

I have never had a parent ask me though.

Responsible gun owners have theirs locked in a safe, in a closet where no child should be able to get to it.

I have friends who are police officers, some who are not, just gun enthusiasts & collectors. Yhey lock theirs away and all of them have kids. I have no problem with my kids going there knowing there are guns there b/c I know they are responsible.

Its just a matter of common sense - if you have them LOCK THEM UP.

I have no problem with guns (I know, not a popular answer). I don't own any but love to shoot. I am very good with a riffle as in shooting in a registered range/club.

I think all guns/riffles need to be in a safe. Only if I was sure people were responsible with their guns/riffles... aka locked and kids have no possible access to it and they are supervised would I let DS play at another kids house.

Re: Would you let your kid play at a friends house knowing they have a gun in their house?

my dad is so anti gun.

then we moved to FL...where people's gun racks were decorations in their living rooms.

He dropped me off at a b-day party when we first moved down there, saw their gun racks and had me leave!Chat Icon I dropped off my gift and got back into the car.

AFter years, he finally had to come to terms with it, everyone had a gun.

This summer, we stayed at our friend's house in FL. The second day we were there, he says he totally forgot about the gun he has in his room.Chat Icon I nearly passed out. right there in his nightstand.

Its a scary thing...I did not let josh out of my sight for the remaining 2 days we were there.

so my answer is, I have no idea what the rules are going to be. I guess I have to see how it is stored. I am in NC now and guns are pretty popular.

I lived in NC. In some areas, it would take over 30 minutes for the fastest police office to come.

When you live in the middle of nowhere.... a gun is the only thing assuring your safety as well as your family.

Re: Would you let your kid play at a friends house knowing they have a gun in their house?

It totally depends on my level of intimacy with the friend's parents.

I have friends who are police officers. They keep their guns in their homes when they are off duty. They are also extremely responsible and lock those weapons up in a lock box and keep them out of reach of small hands. I have no problem letting my child be in their homes.

If it is a person who just happens to like guns... I don't think I would want my kid there without me. Guns make me uncomfortable.

This is something I do not look forward to having to deal with.

You would hope that all parents are responsible - especially if they have a gun in the home - but unfortunately, you just never know.

I plan to make my house the "go to" place for all hang outs - so that I don't need to worry about it! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon In a perfect world, that is! Chat Icon

I know plenty of people like this and if I didn't KNOW they had guns, I would never know b/c they are locked up and hidden somewhere safe.

NO NO NO NO...

My friend as a kid was killed at age 15 playing with a gun, i would possibly if it was a police officer and they had the brains to lock it up, i would specifially ask and not care if I offend anyway, my child will also not be allowed to play if theres a pool...

I wouldnt have a problem with it at all as long as I knew the parents....

We have a gun. The gun is locked in a safe that is bolted to the floor. In a locked closet. The ammo is in a separate locked box in the locked closet.

I would as long as I talked with the parents and felt comfortable that it was out of reach and it had a lock on it.

My DH is a big hunter, and we have guns in the house, but they are not where the kids can get them and they all have trigger locks.

Absolutely not.

They can come to our house (no guns).

This past year, the young son of one of the maintenance workers in my district SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FACE because he got hold of his father's gun. The kid is alive and they did what they could to reconstruct his faceChat Icon Chat Icon

No way, no how, never. And I do ask this question to other parents.

One of the mom's in my DC's daycare class has a pretty controversial pro-gun bumper sticker on her car. I was a bit Chat Icon when I saw it... didn't expect to see that in this neck of the woods. I realized who it is and well, no play dates at that house.

BTW: I have a neighbor who I am friendly with, both her and her DH are NYPD, they have two young girls. They leave their guns locked at the precinct. They do not keep them in the house because they have young children.

I used to say absolutely not, but now that my brother is a cop and I've seen the precautions he takes (immediately goes in a gun safe that is attached to the floor when he gets home) I'm more willing to consider it. But it would have to be someone I'm VERY comfortable with and can talk openly and frankly with about how they secure them, not just a playdate with someone we only know from school, KWIM?

I'm surprised they do this. My brother is NYPD and one of his colleagues got jammed up b/c their off duty piece was stolen from his locker in the precinct house. It was recovered but has severely impacted his career.

As a wife of a police officer, I know this will be an issue for some people andI do understand. My Dh is very responsible with his guns and would hope his daughter would not miss out on friends because of his occupation.. The guns are away and DD will not know they are in the house and are not in reach of ANYBODY!!!Chat Icon

I know a cop that left their gun out on a counter during company...
I ask that question---
I ask will they swim with supervision--this was only since 5th grade b4 that...nope---u cannot go unless I can to.
I ask do they play video games and are they rated M...
I askmy kids to call me at 12 and 13 when they get to where they r going..if they don't I come and get them.
I also have a spy program online to seeeeeeeeeeee everything...
I do not see it being over-protective...this is my child...the loves of my life...my everything...
why wouldn't I ask or prevent them from danger?

A police officer's house or not, I would ask them, if possible, to show it to me so I could see how locked up it was. I know someone who was shot and paralyzed at his friend's house because the father's "locked up" gun was accessible.
