Do people treat texts like emails now?

Wondering what is appropriate time for replying to a text. I am not talking dating type texts but friends, family, neighbors etc.

Since no one calls much anymore we text. I have 2 friends which I would call flaky since they always show up late or cancel plans. They also text me back 24 hours later sometimes more!

Also I have a 24 yo neighbor who is going to dog sit for me. I sent her all the details yesterday evening and wondering when she will reply.

Everyone has a phone around them and I find it difficult to believe they haven't seen my texts yet.

I admit on weekends I take longer to reply.

What's the norm? Do I have high expectations?

I dont understand either when people take sooo long to text back. Everyone has their phone with them and no one can really say that at least in a 12 hour period you didnt look at your phone once! Even if you are out with your kids it is usually out taking pictures.

I dont know what the norm is but I get back usually quickly to a text unless its on purpose.

I'm a little OCD, so I have to respond ASAP. But I think as long as you respond by the end of the day, that's appropriate, to let it go longer, I would just assume the person isn't going to respond. I also find it rude, since as you said, phones are right next to you at all times. The exception is if you are away, or if you have a little baby and might forget about a text you received 5 minutes after you received it, lol.

Text etiquette

It's easier for me to read texts than respond, especially at work or when I'm with DD.

Sometimes I forget to respond. It happens.

I think it depends on the relationship. There are people I text literally constantly, and there are people who it is more 'business like'.

I don't think there is really a rule, I would probably text the neighbor about dog sitting again if I didn't hear back.

Your friends, idk, I usually respond to things quickly if they have to with plans

Re: Text etiquette

I try to respond quickly, since text is the preferred communication for many of my clients.

I mean, I don't expect immediate response from others, as they may be driving or doing something where they don't/can't have their phone on.

But if the text requires a more in-depth response than I have time to give, I will always quickly respond to say something like "I am tied up now, but I will call or email you later with more information/full response." So at least the text is acknowledged.

I think if a day passes with no response to a text (like you texted in the morning and still don't have a response that evening), and the subject matter is important, I would follow up with another text to say "I just wanted to make sure you received my earlier text re: xyz" or even call. A lot of people get a high volume of text messages and maybe overlook some. Or may see it and think "I'll respond later" and then forget to do it.

Text etiquette

I am not a texter and I let all my friends/family know that. Sometimes I reply 2 days later. If they need me, they know to call or email. I am emailed trained from my blackberry (I'm old I know lol) and I just haven't gotten the hang of texting. Email me and I get back to you almost immediately but if you text, it better not be important lol. I need to get with the times.

Same here.

I have typed texts and forgotten to hit send, because I get distracted.. it's not deliberate.

I do take longer to text back if it's a work text or something like that. I see it, but I won't read it (where it says "Read: 8:59 AM") until I'm ready to respond. I try to respond within 24 hours unless I'm away on vacation or something like that.

Re: Text etiquette

I either text back immediately or take a while (24+ hours).

If I'm home, I am often not carrying my phone around. If I am out, I usually have my kids and/or with friends. My phone is usually in my purse. That doesn't mean that I did not click and read the text within a few hours. I may have my hands full and then forget, especially if it wasn't that important.

Sometimes text go missing. I text my DD and DS as a group and have discovered sometimes he doesn't get the text. I've started texting important things individually.

Re: Text etiquette

I don't have a smart phone/ touch screen phone so texting, although I don't mind it, is a little more of a hassle for me in that it takes much longer than it does for everybody else. Also I am not attached to my phone.. often the battery dies & I don't even notice until the next day or even a few days later! So depending on the importance of the text or whether I have another means of communication with that person, I tend to take a while to respond or let text conversations die because I can't keep it up. If I'm FB friends with the person I often just use that message function instead because I can type it out on my computer, or leaving someone a voicemail is good too. I generally don't have extended text conversations with anyone... I'm more likely to text someone to let them know I'm going to call them lol. My phone also can't send or receive pictures, so sometimes people send me picture texts & I can't even open them. DH laughs at me & says I'm living in the last century with my old phone but it suits me fine & I like the simplicity of it!

I sometimes take a very long time to text back, but I'm not the type to keep checking my phone constantly. If I'm out with my family my phone is usually in my bag on silent unless I'm taking a picture. And I won't interrupt family time,to text or even call someone back unless it's something important. Or if I'm cooking or doing housework or something, I won't keep stopping to text. Whenever I have a little downtime I'll check my phone for texts, fb messages, etc, and I'll respond then.

If it's not something important or a client I generally wait. It's annoying to start a text convo if i'm busy with the kids. I don't think it's rude at all.

This. Especially when I'm at work or with my DS. I'll admit I can be flaky and forget. And then I feel so embarrassed that I forgot.

I get a lot of business related texts, but my phone is on silent in my bag for several hours a day when I'm with clients.
If I come out of the meeting and need to drive home I only answer texts that are urgent so sometimes I won't answer anything social. I usually answer when I get home but sometimes I forget and that means I answer the next day which is probably really annoying to some of the people that text me.

Wait, the texter can see what time you read the text? I had no idea, if that's the case.

Re: Text etiquette

My biggest pet peeve is when friends don't respond to texts... I understand people work, get busy but after 2 days I am beyond annoyed. what's worse is if you see that friend posting all over FB.... They have time to do that but not to respond to a text... In my opinion that is just not nice...

I always respond to text by the end of the day.. I think that is appropriate.....

Agreed. I know someone who is proud of the fact that she "never responds to anyone" how is.that even possible? Yet her phone is literally attached to her.

I answer embarrassingly fast or 3 hours later. There is no in between. I see no.reason not.to answer. Unless my sister is trying to pick a.figth, then ignore and deleteChat Icon
