testing (not poas kind)

My mother in law does not know we are ttc, although she's hoping Chat Icon
She said my dh should be tested for the jewish disease (which is the reason I'm posting this) I'm A) not really sure what it's called B) I thought it only came from the mother? C) isn't it something that gets done after you get a bfp?
I have no clue, so TIA

Re: testing (not poas kind)

I dont know the name of it, but our rabbi did mention it to us (when we were meeting with him for our wedding). It gets done prior to getting a bfp; it is a genetic test

did a quick google search and here is what i came up with
hth
test

DH and i decided NOT to get tested

There are 16 genetic tests that are often done if you both have Ashkenazi Jewish descent. I think "the one" your MIL is referring to is Tay Sachs.

Do you have Jewish heritage?

Really, only 1 person has to be tested and if they're not a carrier, then the 2nd partner doesn't have to be tested. It's an issue if you're both carriers. And this is a test you'd want to do before TTC.

I think they have to come from both sides. So if you do not have any Jewish relatives you should be ok, if you do you should be tested and if you come out positive then he should.

I think.

I am not a regular poster on this board although I hope to be soon Chat Icon
If there is a chance your DH is a carrier I would get tested. Tay sachs is a rare but terrrible genetic disease. It affects mainly three populations; Ashkenazi Jews, French Canadians and the Cajun population in southern Louisiana. The probability of a person of Ashkenazi desent being a carrier for Tay Sachs is 1 in 30. Getting tested only requires having some blood drawn. There is a panel called the Ashkenazi Jewish Panel that tests for eight common disorders.

Re: testing (not poas kind)

i did the jewish panel while TTC. mine tested for over 30 genetic issues. i was not a carrier for any of them so DH did not need to be tested. you should get tested first because if youre not a carrier then it wont matter if he is.
as far as getting it done after BFP, do you really want to worry about that AFTER conceiving?!
good luck!

Re: testing (not poas kind)

I'm irish/english and italian. DH is russian (jewish) and greek. I don't think it's necessary since technically he's only half? IDK maybe it's better to be safe than sorry?

they usually run the panels are your first prenatal and if they get positive results, will ask DH to get tested.

i never had the testing done prior to TTC

Re: testing (not poas kind)

We did genetic testing before we started TTC. I am a carrier of cystic fibrosis so DH had to get tested- luckily he is not.
It's just one less thing to worry about now.

This is another dumba$$ question but where do you even GO or ask? I HATE going to doctors, so I avoid them at all costs. DH says I think tea cures everything

to be honest i have no idea..my doc said there is sometimes a connection with fragile x and autism...but when i told my sister who has my autistic niece, she said that is not true

i do not knwo who was right lol..my sis is very set on what she believes about autism so i do not question her and he is a doctor ..

i figured i would worry if i was a carrier and i was not so i never brought it up again

Re: testing (not poas kind)

hmm... yea I was j/w bc DH's sister has our autistic nephew and she's seen a million specialists and read a million books and never heard her say anything about it. It is something in the back of my mind because they have a lot of problems with him. Trying not to worry about it now but I'll tuck that away...
