We're bad, we have the tv on in the background all the time...DD will watch when she's interested and I'm guilty of turning on a show she likes to calm her down sometimes...from these shows she knows so many words and animals at 15 mos that I don't see it doing any harm...

Sorry, but IMHO this is not 'bad' and you're not 'guilty' of anything !!
Sean is almost a year, and watches TV all the time. It's SO low on my list of things to control and limit and worry about - He also crawls and walks around and explores my entire house, plays with his toys, sings and dances, pulls his books off of the shelf until he finds his favorite, etc etc. That thing is my savior at 6AM when I have to get ready for work and DH is running out the door to catch the train. - Can we say Ni Hao Kai Lan ??? I don't care how many studies they do and how much research they throw in my face - I will stand by my belief that a WELL ROUNDED kid is not going to be 'hurt' by the TV.

josh showed no interest until 18 mos, when we bought Toy Story.

He has made up for lost time.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation

when i'm home with Em - the TV is on - i cannot handle a quiet house. Every sound freaks me out and i get anxious (less so during the day - once it's dark - forget it).

there are a few shows she'll stop what she's doing & watch - but mostly - she'll play and check it out randomly.

when dave is home with her - the tv is only on 3-5'ish...and when she's eating (it's one of the few ways we can get her to eat).

at the sitter's house - it's never on - unless she's feeding Em.

I never sweated it. My DD has been watching TV since she was probably 2 months old (started with Baby Einstein). I say everything in moderation and she is well adjusted at 18 months, plays well alone and with others, and enjoys toys and games so if she wants to watch some cartoons or a movie we let her. I don't really see the big deal as long as that is not all they are doing all day every day.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation

My boys are 13 months and have zero interest in watching TV, and I'm glad for it. When they do develop an interest, it will be limited. I'm lucky in the sense that since they are twins, they love to play with each other and they pretty much entertain themselves much of the time. I'm sure it will be a different story when they get older, but for now, they don't watch it at all. Frankly, I don't see the need for it at their age. But, if I only had one child, I might be singing a different tune. Chat Icon

DS loves the BBC Planet Earth DVD set. Other than that, it doesn't really grab his attention, because he is only 4 months. I think he just likes the under water scenery of Planet Earth.

I don't think I will really worry abou it though, like pp's have said.

My TV is on day long, sometimes she watches, sometimes she doesn't. I don't care and I don't feel like it holds her back at all. It works for us and that is all I care about.

Research shows that children learn cause and effect from playing with toys, and while Nick Jr shows are educational to an extent, TV watching in general does not provide adequate feedback for proper development.

I actually agree with this, but still allow DD little bits here and there. I think a little bit is ok, and as she gets older, I want her (hopefully) to get into healthy habits with eating and being physical. If she watches a little then too its fine. I think the amount of time is a big factor here. It's just like exersaucers and jumparoo's slowing development... DD is in them for short amounts of time.

I totally agree...my DS watches a fair amount, but we also read lots of books and play games. DS is not even two and knows his numbers already (1-10)and most of the alphabet. In addition, he is talking quite a bit. I do not think that the TV is slowing him down at all. He still loves to do so many other things. There are just too many hours in the day. I can accomplish so much when DS watches TV. Things that need to get done!

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation

I let Ethan watch TV, and he has been since he was about 6 m/o. He never sits and watches an entire show. He will play with his toys and look up once in a while, usually when they sing, and then go back to playing. He'd rather be outside than watch TV, and he loves to play outside, read and play with his toys.

He is 14 months now, and I see no problem with it...I think it helps him learn. He loves Moose and Zee, sings and dances with them. Elmo as well. And he copies the DJ Lance dance on Yo Gabba Gabba. Chat Icon He does not watch it for hours, and I do not let him watch anything objectionable. I save my shows on DVR for when he goes to sleep.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation

personally, I do not think it is bad at all, my dd spoke very well at an early age and I think it was largely in part to watching age appropriate shows Chat Icon
