Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
He found the TV in our house. We have a great time getting him not to look at it. He loves it. If he finds it and fights me, I turn it off.
Explain to me why it's bad though. Is it the content of the shows or his eyes looking at the screen?

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
Mason is obsessed with the TV. Well, so is my DH, which is why we have huge TV's all over the house. There's no place to look, but the TV
Everyone has there own thing about it. DS is 10 months and I do let him watch an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba a night. Usually in our room b4 bedtime to keep him calm or last night we watched it all night b/c he was screaming from teething. It was the only thing that calmed him.
I do like shows that are educational, have cute music and simple. It's on in the background or I play music. I have a friend that won't let her DC watch TV b4 2 and very strict about how much.

Not entirely sure, but I do limit severly how much DS watches. He watches no tv during the week and will watch a small amt on the weekend. He usually isn't interested much in TV which I'm thankful. Trying real hard to wait til he is 2 for watching more tv.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
James is 7 months and has probably only watched TV a handful of times. I try to really limit his time in front of it. We usually keep it on for background noise, but he really has no interest in watching it. I have a friend whose 3 DC's were OBSESSED with TV watching to the point where they wouldn't even turn to look at you when you spoke to them - they would sit in front of the tv alllllllll day long from the time they were about 10 months old until close to 4. I'm serious - they wouldnt even acknowledge your presence in the room if the TV was on.
When he's at my parent's house, my dad always "watches" tv with him - despite my asking him not to several times.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
I just feel like at this age, we have no reason for him to watch TV...
I like for his play to be more interactive... KWIM? We sing, play, read, talk, etc. I'm definitely not going to sit there and watch TV with him - I feel like that would be a waste of our time together! (maybe b/c i'm a working mom)... and when he needs to entertain himself while I'm doing something, I like to put him on his gym mat or wherever and talk to him while I'm doing whatever it is that I'm doing...

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
I allow Lexi to watch once in awhile. She likes yo gabba gabba, blue's clues and ni hao, kai lan. She does not watch all of these shows every day. Sometimes if we come home just in time for yo gabba gabba and she's ready for a bottle and a nap, I will let her watch while she has her bottle. Sometimes I let her watch an episode of blue's clues in the morning while I wake up and have breakfast.
I don't think it's an issue unless your kid is in front of the TV for hours a day.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
I let DS watch TV. It's not excessive and he doesn't watch for more than a few minutes at at time. However, when it's on, I am constantly pointing things out to him (Look, see the red bird? Look at the letter E, etc.). I don't have a huge problem with it because it's not all DS does for entertainment. I like to use it as a took to help facilitate learning.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
Let me be more specific. I do not put Ethan in front of the TV to watch TV. I am talking about if it's on an I am feeding him, or if it's on and he is playing on his baby gym, he will turn and look at it.
He likes to stare at it. If someone is holding him in my LR I ask that they turn him the other way or else...he will watch it.

I don't have the TV on unless it's for something specific (like I stated above).
When she was a newborn I would watch TV once in awhile because she slept all day.
DH watches hockey games and she loves to watch with him.
I really try not to just have it on for background noise or inappropriate shows.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
Once DD started looking at the TV when it was on (about 4 or 5 months old), we turned it off and only put it on when she was asleep.
We didn't let her watch TV until she was 2 and then it was only shows geared toward her age and very little of it. Even then, she turned into an addict and when I was pregnant, I gave into it. Now, we have scaled it back again. Also, we have a 4 month old DS at home and it's not good for him to be watching.
The problems I have with TV for babies: too many images to process, often the images are too fast (even on Nick Jr and PBS), I don't like background noise (I don't want them to get accustomed to the TV being on at all times), also-the TV does not react to THEM and interferes with their ability to process body language, facial movements, etc.
This is just my opinion (based on some research). I have used TV as a crutch or to keep DD occupied if I have something going on with Owen and I also understand that a mother has to do what works for them but for us, we strive for as little TV as possible.

Thanks, Crank. This is what I have been trying to do. Keep it off unless it's absolutely necesary. i.e. to check the weather. I sometimes put the music channels on (they just so one image, while a song plays) bc the kiddie music on his stuff drives me nuts. He like light classical and Billy Joel

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
DS has been watching TV since he was 3 months old. He LOVED Jack's Big Music Show and even a little bit of Sesame Street.
He has always played with his toys, stopped to watch or whatnot.
He will be three this month and honestly, watching TV has honestly given him a lot of words and knowledge.
It kinda stinks b/c we have the TV on Disney/Nick Jr/Kid's 13 when he is awake, but it works for us.

Between Yo Gabba Gabba, Baby Enstien, My Baby Can Read...my DD knows songs, how to dance, clap hands, hands up/down, etc.....
she is learning from these shows. I see nothing negative about this.
we play with her much more then she watches any show + there is no tv at daycare.
if done correctly, tv is a good thing it also gives you and DH a chance to say hello to each

DS loves to watch sports. mostly cause of the colors and the fast movement. he'll only watch if DH has a game on and he's in the exersaucer/jumparoo and happens to turn around to see it. i dont think its a big deal. he'll watch it for like a minute then turn back to what he was doing. at daycare theres a small tv on in the background using playing Dora.

Yup... ITA. He's at daycare all day playing and learning. No TV. I put it on in the background and sometimes when he's into Yo Gabba Gabba it gives me some free time to get the bottles ready for the next day, do a quick clean up and say Hi to DH. We play for a couple of hours b4 bedtime then it's on again in the background when I'm getting him into PJ's for a bit. After it's bottle, a couple of books, and then bedtime. He gets excited when I sing him songs from the shows

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
Research shows that children learn cause and effect from playing with toys, and while Nick Jr shows are educational to an extent, TV watching in general does not provide adequate feedback for proper development.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
he "watches" what we watch when we watch tv ( alliteration!)
he LOVES it b/c it's colorful and full of action so it grabs his attention.
but he also LOVES watching the flowers blow in the wind for the same reason.
so it's not such a big deal to me that he watch it now.
we don't put it ON for HIM. but sometimes it's on in the background and that is ok.
and he watches, again, what we watch...so he may learn to make a mean omelet or how to build a gazebo in the garden...that can't be too bad.
I don't really plan on introducing him to many tv shows before 2 years though and my MIL is so against them anyway that it doesn't matter.
and since she's with him during the day we don't have that issue.

Abby watches TV when I am preparing dinner. She also counts to 10, knows her colors as well as a few letters and numbers. I do not think she is over stimulated. I do not think she will end up with ADHD as a result either.

DS loves watching sports as well. We are guilty of having the tv on a lot during the day but, it helps at the end of the day when DS is crabby.

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
I did not allow my older one to watch TV till he was nearly 2. With my second child, I couldn't really do that because by then, I allowed DC#1 to watch 1 or 2 shows a day. So she was obviously exposed to that, though at least it's mostly Blue's Clues and Olivia.

Mine watches about 1 hour during the day and 1 later afternoon. All depends on what I need to get done. If is Dora or Blues Clues he is not moving so I miminize that.

We're bad, we have the tv on in the background all the time...DD will watch when she's interested and I'm guilty of turning on a show she likes to calm her down sometimes...from these shows she knows so many words and animals at 15 mos that I don't see it doing any harm...

Re: Talk to me about the baby watching TV situation
i think its bad in the context that people use it as babysitters and do not communicate with their children as much as they would if the tv werent on. (at least from what i've read). I think the studies show that babies who were always in front of tvs with no interaction from their caretakers had much less vocabulary.
DS is 5 mo..when i was home on leave I had NICKJR. on all the time; I usually face him opposite the tv so he cant see it; he doesnt sit in front of the tv and watch, but i like him to hear the music, sounds, etc. and i sing along and talk to him.

Sorry, but IMHO this is not 'bad' and you're not 'guilty' of anything !! Sean is almost a year, and watches TV all the time. It's SO low on my list of things to control and limit and worry about - He also crawls and walks around and explores my entire house, plays with his toys, sings and dances, pulls his books off of the shelf until he finds his favorite, etc etc. That thing is my savior at 6AM when I have to get ready for work and DH is running out the door to catch the train. - Can we say Ni Hao Kai Lan ??? I don't care how many studies they do and how much research they throw in my face - I will stand by my belief that a WELL ROUNDED kid is not going to be 'hurt' by the TV.
