Un-friggin-believable.....I hope she doesn't win, I cannot imagine the precedent this would set.
If this isn't entitled, I don't know what is.

Awful. This attorney gives all other attorneys a bad name. He should be ashamed of undermining her parents. The girl is a brat and not doing herself any favors in life at all.

Yes, and the "girl" herself is an adult. So as far as I'm concerned, she also deserves a smack in the head for acting like an entitled little brat. The nerve!

I swear to god I thought the same exact thing. We are using our own value system when considering if this is right or wrong. Something is very wrong in this family unit especially that a family friend is involved in this. Much more to this story I imagine.

yeah, there has to be a lot more to the story.
part of what started this is the boyfriend, who the parents asked her not to see.
i also have a feeling that the friend and friend's family are fueling a bratty girl. if no one with money was helping her push this along, it would have died a long time ago. she would have either gone back to her parents' home and been done with it or she would have quickly figured out that life ain't easy.
i'm quite curious to see how this plays out.

Also, the article I read, which I'm not sure is the same as the one posted, her dad was quoted as saying she's got some emotional problems and is supposed to be taking medication which she is NOT. Also, she was bullying her younger sister, AND was suspended from school TWICE this year. It sounds to me like this kid has some serious emotional issues.
I really think her friend's parents that are helping her with this should have just stayed the hell out of their kid's friend's business.
It seems to me that there is a WHOLE LOT more to this story than any of us know.

Should be an interesting case. This morning on the radio, they were discussing how child supports goes until 21 if the child is in school.. I wonder if that will apply here.

I always like to know what's behind the headlines. For example, what if there was money left to her, with her parents as trustees, to be used for her education? Every time I see a lawsuit discussed online, I would prefer to read the court complaint myself. If this is what it seems to be, the case will get tossed. If she has a disability, her parents do have an increased responsibility.
ETA: according to USA Today it is high school tuition that they stopped paying. There has to be some major reason for a parent to do that mid-year. How will that ever help a kid, even if your child needs major intervention to stay in line? I'll venture to guess that there is crazy on both sides.

this was what i was thinking was the money left to her specifically for school and there with holding it from her. She also doesnt seem to be that horrible of a kid. from the article she has scholarships and gets good grades

I think there is always more to the story.
After reading about narcisstic parents & how they manipulate finances with their children, I can't make a knee jerk judgement on the kid.
I've seen parents withhold financial aid information as the kids are declined financial aid or they don't qualify because their parents make too much. Meanwhile the parents aren't supporting the kid but are claiming them on their tax returns.
It's a messy world.

This is a smart but troubled kid. She's got some emotional issues and apparently when she started dating this one particular boy her behavior escalated, she stopped taking her meds and was acting out very badly.
She's been suspended from school twice.
She's been bullying her sister.
She has not been following curfew or any of the other rules set forth by her parents.
Upon turning 18 SHE left the house because SHE declared SHE is an adult.
Oh but wait, oops, she still wants mommy and daddy to pay for her CAR, her PRIVATE SCHOOL and other expenses.
Well, if you're such an adult, pay your own way.
Apparently there is a college fund, I'm guessing that would be the only thing she'll have any right to but beyond that why should they have to pay? She decided that she didn't want to follow her parents rules in their home and decided to leave.
They even said they want her to come hjome but she's got to reconsider the guy she's dating and has to follow the rules of the house. And we're not talking ridiculous rules, we're talking about following curfew, giving back things she borrows from her sister, stop bullying her sister and doing her chores.
If any of this rings true, this kid is a class-A BRAT.

I feel if that's what's really happening here then why isn't she suing for emancipation?
According to the documentation I've read online (so of course who knows the accuracy) she's suing for them to pay for her schooling and give her back her car.
They're claim is the car is theirs since they paid for it.
As for the high school, I don't see why they should have to pay for it if she refuses to come back home and live by their rules. There's nothing saying she has to go to private school, I'm sure they have public schools where she lives, let her go there and forego a school with tuition.

That is for divorce. Here the parents are married and in agreement with one another that the child chose to move out. That the child did not follow the rules of the house (curfew, dating, no bullying). The child could go to public school. If she wanted to she could get a part time job. The outstanding debt for her school is about $5,000. That is not an insurmountable amount of money. She could and should apply for aid from the Catholic private school. It would depend if the money is in trust, a 529, or other types of account for her to have any ability to gain access to it.
I agree with honey badger. I think she would have filed for emancipation - in this case it sounds like she is a spoiled brat and the friends parents are enabling her bad behavior.
