Talk about entitled - 18 year old sues her parents to financially support her

I believe it was stated by a school employee that she had it out with her mother in public and her mother screamed she never wanted to see her again.

A story I read did say that too but (and I don't mean this in a snarky way), so what? I'm sure many parents of many unruly teens have said such things in the heat of the moment.

The kid was suspended two times this year alone! You have to do some pretty bad shit to get suspended. I can assure you if I ever pulled that when I was 18 my mother would have said worse! Chat Icon

I will say this much, it seems obvious to me that the kid has some severe problems. She is supposed to be taking medication for emotional issues and she stopped. Clearly that's playing a role in all of this which is sad. You're dealing with an emotionally unstable young girl and as far as I'm concerned the dad of her best friend is a total ass for even supporting her in the maner of funding her legal expenses.

I said it before, I'll say it again, there's WAY more to this story.

I think part of the problem is that in our society we do send mixed messages to "kids" that age. On the one hand we say they are adults, can vote, go to war etc. but on the other hand we tell them they are bit old enough to drink. Even when they are in college many parents do exert rules over their kids (I know that mine did). I just feel like we as a society need to decide whether now, by today's standards, 18 is a kid or an adult and then adjust all rules accordingly. Currently, young adults are kind of stuck in this limbo between adulthood and childhood.

As far as this case, I'm not sure what to think as I feel there is more to this case. The fact that another adult shelled out 12k for legal fees (and all he wants back are his legal expenses) makes me think there is perhaps more to this story. I also know that there are unreasonable parents out there. One of my college friends went to a private boarding school for high school, which her parents wanted her to go to, they had her take out loans to go there and then when she was in college she was working to pay back those loans despite the fact that they had the financial means to pay and they were the ones who made her go there in the first place.

Its called affluenza.

These parents who give their children everything are raising monsters. Entitled monsters.

I exist therefore I deserve.

Yup! The parents are as much to blame. You created that monster. I hope this girl looks back at this when she gets older and feels really stupid.

I'm sure there is more to the story, but it sounds like there was a complete breakdown In the family unit if things got to this point. Eta : I think it is too simplistic to simply call the girl entitled. This is also a whole family issue. Things must have been very wrong for a long time.

Not actually true. I was suspended for cutting school. Which doesn't really make much sense, but alas I was.

My knee-jerk reaction is that this is a spoiled brat who should have gotten a smack on her ass 10 years ago or so (go ahead and flame me).

However, I do know that in order to get financial aid in college you are obligated to provide your parent's tax returns until you are 25 years old.. regardless if you are supporting yourself (I went back to college at 24, had been living on my own since I was 20.. what a big surprise for me) and the only way to get out of that requirement is for there to be some kind of documentation that you don't have a relationship with your parents.. police report, letters from multiple sources, high profile court case.... anything is possible.

Cutting is technically pretty bad, isn't it? I mean, it's not as bad as fighting or something but it's not good. Plus we're old, I'm sure these kids are doing worse things to get suspended Chat Icon

I kid, I kid! Not knowing what she was suspended for I guess I really can't comment on it but I'd have to guess it was something more worthy of a punishment stronger than detention so that's got to be somewhat bad.

I do find your punishment to be rather ironic, though! I'd think in-school suspension would have been a much more appropriate punishment Chat Icon

I agree there's more to this case than what we know but what this kid is suing for is just money.

If she really wanted to be on her own she'd be suing for emancipation, kwim?

She wants her cake and to eat it too.

Talk about entitled - 18 year old sues her parents to financially support her

This girl obviously had no respect for her parents during her life. She feels entitled and they seem to have been able to provide.

Which is why even my 5yr old hears the words NO often and with little mercy.

Can you sue for emancipation if you're already 18? Wouldn't that only apply to a minor who's not yet legally independent?

The financial aid part of it isn't too hard. When I started college at age 18 my mother and I were not speaking and I had to have statements from myself and my family accountant that I was more or less emancipated and independent from my parents. I also had to have an interview with the financial aid director to explain that my mother and I were estranged and give notarized statements and they declared me an independent student. It was all over within a week and I didn't go to court or anything.

Re: Talk about entitled - 18 year old sues her parents to financially support her

This family needs therapy...no question about that.

But, IMO, it doesn't matter if the girl or her parents are saints or are horrible horrible people. By law, the parents need to provide their daughter with education, not necessarily private schooling. They are not required to pay 1 dime towards her college education. Even if they say they have a college fund for her that is still their money to do with as they please.

If this girl really wants to go to college and her parents won't fund it, she should get a job, take out loans, and perhaps consider a cheaper college for the first year or so until she can afford the education that she wants.

I really don't understand this entitlement era.

The parents really look distraught. In her pics it looks like she thought she was going to get what she wanted.

I always like to know what's behind the headlines. For example, what if there was money left to her, with her parents as trustees, to be used for her education? Every time I see a lawsuit discussed online, I would prefer to read the court complaint myself. If this is what it seems to be, the case will get tossed. If she has a disability, her parents do have an increased responsibility.

ETA: according to USA Today it is high school tuition that they stopped paying. There has to be some major reason for a parent to do that mid-year. How will that ever help a kid, even if your child needs major intervention to stay in line? I'll venture to guess that there is crazy on both sides.

Did you read the article?

This is a smart but troubled kid. She's got some emotional issues and apparently when she started dating this one particular boy her behavior escalated, she stopped taking her meds and was acting out very badly.

She's been suspended from school twice.

She's been bullying her sister.

She has not been following curfew or any of the other rules set forth by her parents.

Upon turning 18 SHE left the house because SHE declared SHE is an adult.

Oh but wait, oops, she still wants mommy and daddy to pay for her CAR, her PRIVATE SCHOOL and other expenses.

Well, if you're such an adult, pay your own way.

Apparently there is a college fund, I'm guessing that would be the only thing she'll have any right to but beyond that why should they have to pay? She decided that she didn't want to follow her parents rules in their home and decided to leave.

They even said they want her to come hjome but she's got to reconsider the guy she's dating and has to follow the rules of the house. And we're not talking ridiculous rules, we're talking about following curfew, giving back things she borrows from her sister, stop bullying her sister and doing her chores.

If any of this rings true, this kid is a class-A BRAT.

Yes, I did read the article. What I have not seen is the actual court complaint. We don't even know what is alleged unless we trust headlines. They enrolled her in a private school when she was a minor, incapable of entering into that contract without them. I don't see how it will help her future if they pull the tuition money now. What are the chances she finishes high school if tuition funds are cut now? What does she really learn from not being able to finish high school? Then what, everyone complains if she lives off the system? I do not think that high school tuition is the fund to cut when your kid is not behaving. Did they escort her to the public school to enrolle her and make sure she can graduate on time? Who would not do that for their child? Let them pick another way to teach her a lesson.

I'm not sure how true any of this is since it is a blog link- but she is making some pretty harsh accusations!

Looks like her boyfriend is a scum bag. Was it his parents she was staying with and they paid for her legal fees?
