Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
I'm so curious as to why people don't vote.
I firmly believe it is everyone's duty to vote and if you choose not to, you have no right to complain about the state of things in our country.
Am I the only one?

I agree with this, but, i also don't think people should vote just for the sake of it (or just along party lines) without knowing who/what they're voting for- its just as bad, imo. And, to be honest, i think that's what many people do.

ITA.
It's right up there with voting for someone JUST because they are a woman or a minority.
Vote based on their stances on things.
Vote on their voting records.
Don't vote on their hairdos or party lines.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
I think the only time I voted was in high school. My dh doesn't vote, my friends don't vote, parents don't vote...
I don't know anything about who is running and I'm not going to vote for the sake of voting.

The question is - WHY?
I'm honestly curious why people don't vote or only vote when it's a Presidential election.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
I vote in presidential elections. When asked why only then I'd have to say that my parents didn't vote when I was a kid (still don't) so it was never instilled in me as such a priority. I know it is, and I try to be a good American citizen and uphold my duty but I honestly have a hard time keeping track of who keeps what stances on every issue. And sometimes I feel like, instead of voting for the best candidate, I'm voting for "the lesser of 2 evils" and that's so sad.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
i usually vote, but when i don't, it's usually because i have NO IDEA what platform the candidates are running on or what their stances are on "the issues." if i have personally dealt with a candidate before (like a judge), then i am more inclined to vote for or against them, because i have some insight into their beliefs and the way they work.
the way i see it is, i can't just vote democrat or republican because candidates vary so widely on how they feel about and handle certain issues. if i don't have the time to watch political debates on TV, which i usually don't, then i don't vote because i won't know who/what i am voting for.
ETA: i have tried in the past to look up candidates online to find out what they are all about, and i usually have very litte success, so i give up in frustration.

I vote every single year. When it is a year with no major races, I make sure I read the local paper that has blurbs about each candidate.

Honestly i don't vote beacuse i have no clue what is going on. I don't want to vote if i don't know what i am voting for. I have only really kept up with the presidential elections

I think it's because of people's lack of knowledge about the people running. I'm a presidential voter... there I said it! I don't know enough about the local elections to really vote.. I don't get the newspaper, I don't really watch local news, so I would be lost walking into that booth... it would be very eenie-meenie-minie-moe. That's my own fault and I can totally change that... and when I do, I'll vote.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
I rarely vote and the reason why is because I honestly know nothing about politics or who is running. I know I should but I don't even care. I have too much going and it doesn't interest me.
So, for me to go and vote would be silly. I would just close my eyes and randomly pick someone.
Just being honest

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
Newsday had a large section that listed candidates in the elections, their main positions, background, etc. If you don't have time to read it and go vote, you dont have time to complain then.
I think its funny that people say "well I vote for the president" - the county and district elections will directly effect your everyday life and taxes. I might even say its more important to vote tomorrow for your legislators than for the president.

Normally, I vote in every election, but I was sent on a business trip out of state at the last minute, so I didn't have a chance to do an absentee ballot.... DW is voting, though.

ITA.
The 'in between' elections effect your day to day life considerably more than the presidential elections...and your votes carry more weight now than they do during presidential elections.
I DO vote because the importance of it was always instilled in me by my parents. And I agree with the don't vote = don't complain mentality.

I wanted to add that I do vote for our village elections because I think that is more important to me and my family then any other elections.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?
I always vote by absentee ballot for the US elections, however I am not on the electoral roll here as I am not a citizen. I have to become naturalised to be able to vote. I am thinking about becoming a UK citizen, but its sooooo expensive, and you have a take a test and all...
Maybe next year.

Can I still b!tch, even though I didn't vote? I had every intention until a few days ago. I think that should give me at least partially b!tching credit.....
