I agree that local and state elections are probably the most important.

For those of you who said you don't know the candidates or issues, most local newspapers often will list the local candidates and their platforms.
I know Smithtown News just did this last week.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?

I am proud to live in a country where I have the right to vote. I will always go to the polling place and I always go into the booth. But there have been recent elections where I have not respected either candidate for certain offices and could not bring myself to vote - even along the lines to the party of which I am affiliated. Essentially, I exercise my right NOT to vote.

As a preface, I teach US History, so I feel strongly.

Women have only had the right to vote since 1920! When my grandmother was born women could not vote in this country. I think of Susan B. Anthony and all of the lesser known suffragettes who went to jail so we could vote. I think they would be disappointed in us if we forfoet a right they were willing to do so much for.

I know presidential elections are spashier and get the media attention, but it's these local elections that really impact our day to day lives and communities.

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?

DH and I avidly follow politics..... and frankly, we appreciate when people acknowledge that they aren't following a particular race, and therefore don't vote.... it's much better than a person blindly pulling a lever for someone they don't know, and that vote counting as much as votes from people who really agonize and put a lot of effort into researching the candidates....

so thanks for only voting when you're educated voters, everyone!!!! Chat Icon

oh, and if you want to educate yourself on the local candidates and vote tomorrow, go here: newsday LI voter guide

I firmly believe it is everyone's duty to vote and if you choose not to, you have no right to complain about the state of things in our country.

Can I still b!tch, even though I didn't vote? I had every intention until a few days ago. I think that should give me at least partially b!tching credit..... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Essentially, I exercise my right NOT to vote.

And I totally respect the right not to vote.

Freedom of choice is a great freedom.

But I also urge people to vote not just because of the candidates and who gets elected into office, but there are also public questions.

This year in NJ we are voting not only for some local government officials but on four statewide "yes/no" questions that will appear on every ballot. Voters will decide whether to:

-- Dedicate all money generated from last year's sales tax increase to property tax relief.
-- Revise language outlining when voting rights can be denied by deleting from the state Constitution the phrase "idiot or insane person" and replacing it with the phrase "person who has been adjudicated by a court of competent jurisdiction to lack the capacity to understand the act of voting."
-- Borrow $200 million for open space preservation.
-- Borrow $450 million for stem cell research.

So even if you don't have a candidate you like, you should look at the issues you could have a say in.

** Stepping off my soapbox now. **

Re: Spinoff...If you don't vote, why?

I used to vote in all elections, but since moving out of the US, I think I can only vote in the federal as I am not a resident of any state. I would like to vote in a primary, but I don't think I am allowed.

I will vote in the presidential election.

I can't vote here b/c I am not a citizen, but if I were a citizen then I would vote. If you don't vote here you get a fine, it is the law.

I don't think I will become a citizen as we are planning to move in a year or two to Europe.

Thanks, headoverheels. I guess I should have mentioned that in my follow-up. This is the first election I've missed in recent memory.... Chat Icon
