Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?
After reading the Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas post, I was wondering... When you see an adorable baby what do you say to the parent? Normally I say "She is beautiful, God bless her." I was raised to always finish compliment to a baby with God Bless them and it just comes as second nature. But now I am thinking maybe some people may get offended by that. Would it offend you? What do you say?

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?
That is better than what my DH's grandmother does - she says "she is beatiful" and then spits LOL
a lot of people add "god bless you" in italian culture to ward off the malocchio ( evil eye ) so I am used to hearing it
I don't say it though - i feel like it is something an older woman would say
ETA: It wouldn't offend me - I love when people say stuff like that, even to me. I answer the phones sometimes at work and my favorite is when people wish me a "blessed day" it makes me feel happy inside!

I love it, the more blessings the better, I say. Also, I think most people believe in God in one form or another, so it really shouldn't be offensive, IMO.

Yes I am Latina, so my mom always told me that if you dont say God Bless them the parent may think you are giving the child the evil eye. I tried to explain this to DH and he thinks we're nuts. She got this from her mother etc.

I just say "oh, how cute..." While it wouldn't offend me, I would prefer if random people left the religious comments out.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?
It wouldn't offend me in the least and I think it's a nice sentiment. Whether or not you believe in God, the sentiment is wishing good thoughts for the child.
While I GET that religion is personal, not everyone believes in God, people have different beliefs, etc., etc., I REALLY think we need to be a lot less sensitive about religion and and a lot less uptight about things in general.
If the worst thing someone says to you about your child is "God bless" then you have nothing to complain about.
I honestly think it's sad that we live in a society where we can't even say "God bless" without potentially offending someone. And yes, I have plenty of athiest and agnostic friends. I GET that not everyone believes in God. They've yet to get offended by my reaction when they sneeze.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?
I'd never be offended by someone complimenting my child and wishing them well -
YOU believe in God and you're expressing that sentiment to a child - You're not telling anyone else to believe what you do - KWIM?
Whethere or not their parent believes it is irrelevant IMO - and anyone who would be offended by a stranger wishing their child well is a jackazzz -

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?
I just say "Beautiful baby"
I try not to use boy or girl unless I know for sure because, well, you never know, lol.
I'm Agnostic and I don't get "offended" when someone says "god bless you" to me, I get very uncomfortable. I find it hard to say thank you for the compliment because I feel like I'm thanking you for god blessing me. Does that make any sense?

Yeah, I see what you mean- the child's compliment in turn is a compliment for the parent. I guess with me I dont really say the God bless them part to strangers. I will finish the thought in my head (second nature).
And with little babies and the sexes I just keep my mouth shut. You never know and I put my foot in my mouth a couple of times when I was a kid lol.

I don't have a baby, but I will answer for when people say it to me. I am agnostic almost atheist in that I really don't know if I believe in God, but it doesn't offend me when people say things like that to me. THEY believe it so they are giving me a compliment by hoping their god will bless me. I also do NOT get offended very easily at all. Some people are really sensitive, though.

i personally don't say "god bless you" to anyone but that's just not how i am. i just say "he/she is gorgeous!"

if someone said this to me, i would smile and say thank you - why get offended? they are trying to be nice, not mean, so what is the point of being offended?

You never know with people nowadays. When someone sneezes I just say Bless you. If they get mad- Oh well at least I wasn't rude and said something.
