Small CC balance at the time and definitely student loans.

Re: Spinoff to the credit card debit poll

We had zero credit card debt and zero student loan debt when we bought our first home. I got pregnant with our first child 2 months after we moved in.

I did have cc debt that I paid off prior to our buying the home, using some of our wedding gift money.

DH had student loan debt but he paid that off while he lived at home with his parents before we moved in together. He also managed to save about $40,000 during that time that we were able to use towards our down payment.

That's a great opportunity that your sister offered. I would take it and pay down at least some of the debt so that you are in a better position to buy. (better rates, afford more)

$40k in student loans
$20k in credit cards
$25k in car loans

ETA: we own a home and have a 4.5 month baby

This sounds more like me Chat Icon
First off let me say congrats to all of you with no CC debt...I'm jealous. When I bought my house I had zero CC debt but since then have accumulated 20k in CC debt, I've managed to pay off 9k so far and working hard to pay off the rest.

15k student loans
3k in car loans

I have 2 kids, a SD and own a home

Re: Spinoff to the credit card debit poll

DH & I have about 250K in student loans and we just bought a house.

Most of the loans are mine but we both went to law school so we knew we would have to buy a cheaper house. My loan payment per month is more than my half of the mortgage.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

as long as your debt to income ratio works debt is not going to stop you from getting a mortgage

Re: Spinoff to the credit card debit poll

When we bought our home (aug 08)

*we did not have much CC debt at all.
*We still both have student loans (I have my masters and DH has his doctorate, but considering, what we do owe - it could be much higher)
*Our cars are paid off, so no car loans.

we have a baby on the way

Between DH and I we had $150K in student loan debt and maybe $2K in cc debt, when we brought our house.

Re: Spinoff to the credit card debit poll

Thanks so much to everyone who posted!!

We had another realtor come out today and look at our co-op. She thinks we should list at even less than what the 1st agent said!Chat Icon Chat Icon which was already approx 40k less than what we anticipated

So needless to say - DH is really not feeling all this and we are deadlocked. I think we should sell and go to my sisters... and he does not want to sell, doesn't even want to see what we get pre-approved for Chat Icon most certainly doesnt want to go my sisters... Chat Icon

We are still talking things out... The bright side is that we are not being forced to move- we both thought we could capitalize on the market.

I will keep you all posted! Thanks again!
