Spinoff to Sweet 16's
I was 16 in 1986 and every single one of my friends had a party in a hall. Every one of them. My parents did not allow me to and I was so upset and then 4 years later threw one for my sister at the Watermill. If my daughter wants a party then she will get one. If she would prefer to go on a trip, then that is fine too but I'll leave the decision up to her. (as long as we are financial able too).

Re: Spinoff to Sweet 16's
I'm dreading when my DD asks for this. There is no way I can afford to spend $15,000 to $30,000 on a 4-hour party and THEN a year later help with college? Omg, is EVERYONE on LI just super rich? Seems like it. How do people afford this?
I had my Sweet 16 party in my backyard. Hired a high school senior to be the deejay. And it was fabulous. I love the idea that some girls are doing now is asking to have a friend go on vacation with the family instead of having a big party - instead of burning money on a 4 hour party, you can enjoy a week away and have fun and memories for far less money.

I proudly had a Sweet Sixteen at a hall in '94...of course it was a different circumstance as my grandfather owned a catering hall, but even if he didn't I would have had one somewhere else. All the Sweet Sixteen's I went to back then were in catering halls, but the only ones who did courts and all that over the top stuff were the Hispanic Sweet 15's which is part of their culture. But my little cousin is having one in a few months and I think is doing the court or whatever. Not to hijack, and of course I know it's give what you can afford , yada yada, but I haven't been to a Sweet 16 in about 15 years...whats going rate( I'm single).
Yes, it is crazy in the hispanic culture. We have the 'Quinceaneras' at 15... only for girls, though, at least in my country. The parties I went to were big, but moderate... I have seen here crazy parties with limos, the whole court like bridesmaids, etc. I was in some courts growing up, but the only requirement (I grew up in a small town), was to go to the dance lessons and have a dress with certain requirements (i.e: length, non strapless, etc). For mine, I was given a trip abroad with other girls, and I had a small party in my place. I kind of like it, though.
Now as a parent if I can give something to my DS in reasonable ways, I would do it. It creates great memories. I wouldn't have anything over the top, though, just because everybody is doing so. This year DS is turning 13 and he usually has sleepovers for his birthdays, but we have been talking about doing something bigger and I'm up for it, because it'll be his last year in middle school with his friends, before going separate ways to HS.

Re: Spinoff to Sweet 16's
I turned 16 in 2000. Parties were big back then too. I went to a Sweet 16 basically every weekend (in catering halls). My Sweet 16 would probably be considered "big." My daughter is only 3 but I would rather take a vacation than throw a 4 hour party but we'll see

Either that or super in debt. Most likely the latter. People love to live above their means then cry about credit card debt

Re: Spinoff to Sweet 16's
Sweet 16s and Quinceneras are huge in Latino culture. In my junior year of high school I went to so many! I'll never for get them. I had mine in the basement of a restaurant on Queens Blvd. My parents did what they could. All the parents did. We enjoyed the parties no matter where they were. As long as there was a DJ and food, everyone was happy. I did have a limo, only because my brother's best friend was a limo driver and he gave me a ride to the restaurant in between an event!

I have no clue, lol, but $50 sounds reasonable to me.
I remember when I had mine in '94 I got lots of cards with 16 $1.00 bills
I think $50 is Totally fine.

Spinoff to Sweet 16's
We bought my daughter a used car for her 16th birthday. I think the whole party thing is out of control. I also think spending that much money on a trip is almost ridiculous too. I'll take a trip with my daughter for her 21st, when she might actually like me. :)

I agree with you. 100%!! But everything is like that lately- maybe it's just a NY/LI thing? Even Communions are like weddings and some of the dresses cost MORE than my wedding gown. I can't deal with it, and I won't deal with it.
I have zero patience for party planning and I won't put myself through the stress or the wasted expense. No way. The money will go in her college fund instead of to a party that is over in 4 hours
I wonder if it's a NY/LI too. My guess would be "yes".
i'm going to tell you that the answer is no lol, but i will say that i feel it's limited to "metropolitan" areas... L.A., Miami, greater NYC.
at least for us (latinos) it's 15 (quinceanera). and some of those are cccaaarrrrraaaazzzzyyyy.
luckily, my family does them, but within reason... and they are still crazy expensive.
everyone wants photobooths, candy buffets, chocolate fountains, etc etc etc.
i had a small, backyard party when i turned 15. looking back, wish my parents would have taken me on a nice vacation.
this is one of the areas where i'm so happy to have had a son lol.

Parties are out of control. I had a student give an interesting presentation on the show “My Super Sweet Sixteen.” I forget the details exactly, but it had something to do with when it became popular.
I didn’t have a Sweet Sixteen because I hate being the center of attention. I got a stereo with the latest technology— a CD player. I think my sister got the same thing but it was with cassettes.

I didn't have a Sweet 16 either and truthfully, I've never regretted not pushing for a party. I really had no interest and I was happier getting new bedroom furniture and my parents helping me out with a used car. WAY better than a party IMO. LOL

Spinoff to Sweet 16's
Growing up I went to many fancy Sweet 16's and had one myself at a catering hall. Never saw the whole court thing as a teen but now I know thats very popular, I dont love the idea bc it leaves kids feeling left out of not included. I see nothing wrong w a big party though, my DD is 3 so I have no idea if we will do one but I am not opposed to one if she wants it in 13 years lol

My best friend did a limo with her friends (and parents) in the city to see a show and dinner and I thought that was nice. I didn't have a sweet 16 but I had a big HS graduation party.

I didn't want a party (was shy). I picked out a diamond heart necklace instead that was popular back then.

Spinoff to Sweet 16's
I had my sweet 16 in my backyard. My daughter did have a big affair in a catering hall. To each their own. Its my only girl, She always dreamed of one. I had the best time, and so did she. The only reason someone shouldnt have one is if it puts them in debt. I got married 4 months later so that was a bit stressful with all the planning. I just made sure I budgeted and my husband worked alot of overtime that year.

I didn't want a party. Mine was around the time when Splish Splash first opened - I spent the day there with a friend and then went out to dinner.

Big parties were popular when I turned 16 (in 2002); I had a party at a catering hall, and so did most of my friends.

They are totally over the top however that said, because I love parties, big dresses and we are Hispanic, both DDs will totally be having Quinces unless they decide they would rather take a trip.
I love planning parties and even though DD #1 is only 10, I have already started looking at dresses for her Quince

Re: Spinoff to Sweet 16's
I went to 2 fancy ones in 1992. I t was funny too because both girls were pretty quiet & down to earth-they didn't have fancy clothes/bags/cars, etc.
One was in a wedding chall tha thad multile rooms. there wasnt'rea;;a "court", btu there was a dais, and it was a big deal if you were invited to sit at the dais & light one of the birthday cake candles.
The other one was in the basement of the girl's church, but it was a Greek church & Greek churches are fancy! She was also so done up-- I almost didn't recognize her. she usually wore eyeliner & lip gloss to school , but she had her her & make up professional done & was wearing a cocktail dress.
I think it both cases, it was the norm in their families or cultures. It wasn't like my Super Sweet 16 where she was competing with other girls in the school to have the best party. I think ( especially the Greek girl) had more family than friend there anyway.
Mine was in my living room, as were a few of my friends (or their basements). I went to one at a VFW or KOC or something, but that was pretty casual. Others didn't have them at all & for one girl's we went to some community theater show then out to dinner.

Re: Spinoff to Sweet 16's
My sister in law just told me the date for my nieces sweet 16 NEXT YEAR. it’s already booked and she got a planner that, her words, costs THOUSANDS
my brother must have really given up. With 3 daughters and this type of sweet 16, he’s gonna have to work until he dies. I could only imagine what her wedding will look like!???
I think it’s a big waste. But to each their own. People also have weddings that cost as much as people’s homes. I could never do it.

Spinoff to Sweet 16's
1996 loads of parties. All at halls, many were mini weddings. I had mine at a vfw Hall. We always have backyard parties and my dads will get the option of a backyard party or a trip. It’s not a wedding and graduation is only a couple of years later.

It’s always been a big thing in Hispanic cultures with the guys and the girls. I remember having to attend practices for the dance when we made our entrance. My cousins cost like 10k and she had a custom made dress lol.
.
This. My 15th (quiceanera) was in the early 90's and it is a big deal in Latino culture. I had the custom made dress, court, special dance, planner and it was at a hall. I had over 130 people. It was the norm for us but I will say that some of my non-Latino friends also had big Sweet 16's at catering halls so it's not really a new thing.
Luckily I have 2 boys so I don't even have to think about this, lol.

Yes it was the early 90s and I even have pics of my mom and aunts in quinces. They used to have the parasols ??. The whole tradition of the tiara and changing of the shoes. I always wanted one and said I would do a nice one for my daughter, now I don’t mind that I only have boys.
