Spinoff to addressing an envelope

My parents always taught me that if you are sending something to a female who is married you do this:

Mrs. Michael Smith

If the husband is deceased, you do this:

Mrs. Mary Smith

I think that is old school, no?

If I am sending something to a female who is married, I want to do:

Mrs. Mary Smith

If I am sending something to my husbands grandmother or elderly family member I will do the first way - just so I don't insult them... but I'm curious - what do you do?

Re: Spinoff to addressing an envelope

It really depends who I'm sending it to. If older

I use Mrs. Joe Smith; if I was sending to a friend I would say Mary Smith.

I believe your parents way is the proper way.

Well *I* never call a woman Mrs. John doe.. I find it lacking in respect of the woman's individualism. Now if its both of them I may say Mr. & Mrs John doe especially for a super formal even. But if not formal I'll say Jane and Joe Doe or Joe and Jane Doe depending on my mood.

Otherwise I am Mrs. Veronica *****
I am not my husband

Then again I'm crazy enough that I forced the insurance company to remove his name as the first name on all documents (except marketing junk since that's a different system). Its me THEN him.

It's definitely a generational thing. I would never refer to myself as Mrs. Joseph ____. I get annoyed when I get things addressed that way. Then again, I never changed my name and still use my maiden name. Chat Icon

If I am sending a formal invitation, I tend to do Jane and John Doe instead of Mr. & Mrs. John Doe.

Re: Spinoff to addressing an envelope

If I'm addressing it to both, I'd put:
Mr. & Mrs. John & Jane Smith [I'd use both their first names]
If it's just addressed to the woman, I'd put:
Mrs. Jane Smith

It wouldn't occur to me to refer to the woman by the man's first name, I'm not a big fan of it. But my MIL & DH's grandma send me stuff this way & I don't think too much of it because I know they're very old fashioned.

The only time I use the husbands name is when I am sending something to them both...........Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson.

If I were addressing a letter to the woman separately I would write..........Mrs. Marie Anderson.

I'm sure this isn't he proper way and your parents are probably totally right but the above is how I address letters.Chat Icon

I prefer the correct way, Mrs. John Smith, but I usually do Mrs. Jane Smith if the person is not old, because I know a lot of woman today don't like that. If it's to both of the couple I do Mr. & Mrs. John Smith.

Re: Spinoff to addressing an envelope

I like the old school way for formal mailings. However, I am very rarely sending out these formal things anymore, so I just put the person's first and last name (or both first names and whatever last name they are using).

DH and I confuse everyone. When we got married, we were both going to change our last names to a hyphenated form of both names--so like Johnson-Smith, where I am Johnson and he is Smith.

We changed it on Facebook, but never got around to doing it for real. We recently decided that we are both just keeping our last names, and our DCs will be Johnson-Smith when we have them. We changed back on Facebook.

I get letters and checks addressed to all sorts of people:

Jennifer Johnson
Jennifer Johnson-Smith
Jennifer Smith
Jen Johnson
Jen Johnson-Smith
Jen Smith
Jenn Johnson
Jenn Johnson-Smith
Jenn Smith

I'm lucky if I know who I am from day to day anymore Chat Icon
