what do you write?

I know this couple (female) with kids who consider themselves married. One even took the other's last name. If you were writing a note, would you write Ms. X or Mrs. X? Chat Icon

If you are unsure, you can just address it to their names. i.e. Janice Gray and Julie Cunningham or Janice and Julie Cunningham.

Re: When addressing (as in writing a letter/envelope) someone who is gay...

if they consider themselves married and have the same last name, i think you can address it like you would address a letter to any married couple. to me that shows consideration and thoughtfulness.

so instead of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, i would write Mrs. and Mrs. Jones.

ETA: but i so like the idea of using their first names also.

i invited a gay couple to my wedding and addressed it to "Mr. John Smith and Mr. Jack Jones"

If it's informal then I would do

Jessica & Stacy Smith

If it's formal I would do

Mrs's Jessica & Stacy Smith

Do it as if they are doctors with the same last name.Chat Icon That's what my brother prefers.

I agree, especially since she took her last name.

If they have the same last name then:

Mrs. and Mrs. Smith

ETA:
Also, Mrs. Pattie and Mary Smith

Re: When addressing (as in writing a letter/envelope) someone who is gay...

In this case, I would probably just use
Jane Smith
Mary Smith

or "the Smith family".

I did not take my DH's name, so I don't use Mrs., I use Ms., even though I am married. However, since we have a child, I will use "the Smith family" as a return address on correspondence with family and friends.

Re: When addressing (as in writing a letter/envelope) someone who is gay...

I would do Ms. and Ms. Surname

They aren't anyone's Mrs. JMO.

ETA: Mrs. suggests you are married to a man, hence the Mrs., which to me equals Mister's Missus (or however you spell it).

Just found this on frugalbride.com but I think it's a bit too formal:

Gay Married Couple with the same last name
Outer: The Messrs. Elton and David John
Inner: The Messrs. John

Lesbian Married Couple with the same last name

Outer: The Mesdames Rosie and Kellie O'Donnell

Inner: The Mesdames O'Donnell

So in short form Mesdames could be Ms. ? Chat Icon

ETA: Ms. and Ms. ?

That is exactly what I do...although if one took the other's last name, you might address it just to Ms. Janet Jones
