Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
Do you have a secret account with hidden money that your DH doesn't know about? Or a non-secret account that he doesn't have access to? If so, why?
I have some accounts within my ING account that he is not on, but that's only because we haven't gotten around to adding his name yet. I don't feel the need to have money that he can't get to, because, if our marriage was to break up (isn't that the point of the secret account), I would be entitled to half of what's in our accounts, plus I make more than enough to support myself, so I wouldn't have NOTHING if he were to leave and take everything, I would still have my salary and earning potential.

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
I do still have an account in just my name, but there is only about $100 in it. DH knows about it.
I do think it's important to keep just in case something happened, I already have somewehre established to move my money to that nobody can touch.

I do have my own account. My parents told me to always have one in my own name no matter what. I guess it's a better safe than sorry thing...

Same for us, on all points.
Although its not for me, i *can* understand keeping some money separate b/c so many people have been screwed by not doing so, however, i never could understand HIDING money, or bills. To me, that's a form of lying, and i hate lying.

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
All of our money is joined although we do both maintain a linked checking account to our joint account. We keep a very low amount in there but have used them in the past to hold money that we were going to use for a big expense.
We don't have any secret accounts or bills though.

Same here but its like $400. He knows about it - I could never keep something like that from DH.

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
I don't *think* DW has a secret account... She has her own investments, and retirement accounts. I have my own checking account, though. She knows about it, and has the account # and password. I give myself an allowance (DW gets the vast majority of the $$... ). It's just easier if I pay for gas, toys (for me, or DC), etc. with my allowance. That way, DW doesn't have to worry about how much is in the joint account to pay bills with.

I don't have any account that is hidden from DH....what would be the point of hiding something from the person you are closest too?

He has his savings, checking and credit card accounts as well as retirement plan.
I have mine.
We have ours together.
I don't hide anything from him but he cannot access my accounts. It doesnt bother him and it doesnt bother me. Frankly, it is nobody's business.

i tend to agree yet disagree.
i was hit hard with a wake up call and my late dh always told me he had more then he did and was hiding it from me. well i later found out he didn't but if he would have i might have been out alot. i hope that makes some kinda sence

ditto- he knows about it- b/c I have used it to pay for stuff if he has an off month
it's not a secret
but if I needed it to be it would be- and no one likes to think about something happening- buy my Dad's GF was unable to pay her rent b/c her Ex cut her off from all there money- (forcing her to move in with my Dad) but what if she hadn't met my Dad- what was she going to do?? - which is why my Mother- g-d rest her soul- always said you should have your own money

I hide nothing from DH. Each of us have seperate accounts, and we both know what's in those accounts...... to us, fiscal transparency is vital.....

All of our money is combined in joint accounts. Neither one of us has a separate account. This works best for us

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
I don't have an account hidden from dh, although we do have separate bank accounts but we have each other's logging info.
it's definitely important to have a savings account for emergency purposes, just to be on the safe side but I don't think that it should be a secret.

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
I have a non-secret account that he doesn't have access to. But it doesnt have that much money in it. Anywhere between $50 - 500. Just my little stash to buy things for myself or things that I know he wouldnt want to spend money on.

Re: Spinoff - Hiding money from DH
I had an account that Rob didn't know about. It only had about $7K in it. I did hide it intentionally. Not because I wanted to keep money from him and not because I wanted to tap into it when the need struck - but because I wanted to save for something and I knew he wasn't on board with it. So I figured if I could keep the money seperate and he didn't know about it - then he couldn't have anxiety about it and I could prove that I was able to save x amount of money in order to have y.
It was only for a few months that I kept it hidden - and then I dumped it into our savings account.
