Spin vs. Zumba

I'm taking both class during the week. do you know which class burns more calories. I heard zumba does and works more muscles. what do you think?

Re: Spin vs. Zumba

Zumba definitely works more muscles, but there is no way I can burn the same amount of calories in Zumba that I do in Spin, nor can I get the same cardiovascular benefits in Zumba. It's really all about your heart rate and how long the class is.

It depends on the class and the instructor (Zumba) - with spin there is no way you can't get a good cardio workout. With Zumba you can have a more dancey class that is not as cardio, or you can have a high cardio class. It all depends. Zumba by definition is an intermittent workout, while spin is interval training.

Someone wore their heart rate monitor in one of my Zumba classes and told me she burnt around 350 calories, but she was struggling with some of the moves (another thing you don't have to deal with in spin)

Re: Spin vs. Zumba

I would say spin you probably burn more calories but Zumba is more of a full body workout.

I think it is great to do both classes. Actually this week I am doing a spin class one night and a Zumba class another--they are both great workouts, just different Chat Icon

I have a body bugg. I can burn between 600-700 calories in both Spin and Zumba. They are both very high intensity cardio. You get what you put into it.

Re: Spin vs. Zumba

I would most definitely say say spin. I burn at LEAST 700 calories per class.

It's an incredibly intense cardio workout.

I spin on Real Ryder bikes that actually move so you are using 30% more of your body.

I work every muscle in my body on these bike.

(Google or Youtube them, you'll see)

ITA!!!

I have to say, I have done everything - EVERY workout imaginable.

I found the only ones that I have seen amazing progress with have been Kickboxing and Zumba. They involve moving your body in so many directions, tricking your muscles so they always have to work. Spin is great for building your cardio - I love it for that. But the best way to get yourself into shape in by having a diverse workout plan that involves moving large muscles in new and challenging ways, while working your cardio!

Well, next time you're in town, take a class with me on these bikes and see just how you "move large muscles in new and challenging ways while working your cardio." I dare ya! Chat Icon

If you could see how I've transformed my body in 4 months after having #2 baby and the muscles I've developed soley from spinning on these bikes...you might think differently.

Re: Spin vs. Zumba

I have never taken a spin class. I am actually very intimadated by it because it seems like such an insane workout. I have one cousin who is in the best shape of her life from spin.

I have taken Zumba classes and I can say it totally depends on the instructor, and what you put into it.

I have taken instructors that are more into the dance moves. I have taken instructors that are into crazy cardio. I have taken instructors that are there to have a good time and a good overral workout. I can say that a woman in two of my classes had the calorie counter on and she burned 900+ calories. I have no clue if those are accurate or not. That seems insane to me but if it's right I'll be very happy.

I am going to get some guts and do a spin class one day soon though.

ETA: I think it's also what type of workout you are into. Zumba is my way of feeling like I'm out partying and dancing my azz off.

Where do you go to do this spin class? how often? were you in incredible shape before babies?

I want to get preggo within a year or two and I just feel like I need to get in shape first because I know how hard it will be for me to lose the baby weight when I cant even lose weight now.

I used to be a Spin instructor! Chat Icon I would love to take a class with you! Seriously - I will FM you next time I head to Shelter Island - especially if it's a weekend class and DH can watch the child....

I totally believe Spin can whip a body into shape! I was in the best shape of my life when I taught Spin! Of course, I was also younger and pre-child Chat Icon

I think if anyone devotes time to working out and getting into shape, consistently, and watches what they eat, then they found the perfect workout for themselves. I believe any workout that keeps you coming back is the right one!
