Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
that people assume that if you are overweight you eat twinkies?
Or that if you are thin you do not?

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I assume if someone is overweight, it's because they overeat to a certain extent (myself included).
Twinkies are optional.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I was morbidly obese for a very long time. It was not sweets or junk food that got me there. It was being served family style when I was growing up and transferring bad eating habits into adulthood.

BTW, the Twinkie recipe has changed - the cream filling is not the same cream filling as it was when I was a child.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
Twinkies are fattening and everyone knows what they are, so it's just associated with that.

But I don't understand. If you are fat it does not automatically mean that you eat Twinkies (or cake, cupcakes, french fries, etc.)

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I am overweight because I don't exercise and I really, really need to start again. A typical day for me is cheerios, skim milk and coffee in the AM, salad or wrap for lunch (with balsamic vin.) and grilled chicken with vegetables etc for dinner. Now and then I get Subway, etc. Some people just have slow metabolisms and it's in the genes to be on the chubby side! I have come to accept that.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I was the one with the twinkie comment! No, I do not assume all overweight people eat twinkies.
That's my reaction to people who think it's okay to give thin people back-handed compliments just because they're jealous. It is not.
My mom happens to be overweight and has a thyroid condition that will make it so she'll never be a thin woman. She does happen to LOVE twinkies though, which is why they popped in my head first.

Thank YOU!! So associating fattening foods with overweight people is ok? I hate that folks assume I eat crap because I'm overweight. They don't know my medical history, they don't know my life. So just like someone may hate being called skinny, others may hate being considered a twinkie lover because they are overweight.

You're right, it doesn't mean that for everyone. But most people in my life that are overweight do not eat right.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
i don't like that association either. While being pregnant with DD I gained 80 lbs and everyone told me to stop eating for two. I was barely eating for one and I still blew up. There is more to being heavy then eating.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
OMFG!
people...seriously.
whether it's Twinkies/steak tartar/too much WATERMELON
whatever it IS, if you are overweight, it COULD be b/c you're eating TOO MUCH OF IT...
and a whole host of other reasons (lack of exerciase, thyroid/glandular issues/steroidal use for certain illnesses)
the LIST is endless
Twinkies is a metaphor...
I don't think people mean TWINKIES made everyone FAT.
I effing hate twinkies, but I can eat an entire box of choco cupcakes. and yes, that would make me fat.

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I think only NOW is society learning more and more about why people are overweight. And it's not all food related. I was just watching Rachel Ray this week and they had a whole discussion about other things in your life that can cause you to be overweight (like medication, sleep apnea, etc). The more people learn about it, I think the "stereotype" will disappear.

It's funny how nobody even answered why they assume that thin people DO NOT eat twinkies (or any other fattening foods that "twinkies" may stand for).

Re: Sort of Spinoff -- Why is it...
I don't assume they don't eat it, in fact some of the thinnest people I know have the most HORRIFIC eating habits..
but, they'll stop at 1 twinkie
or
they exercise
or
they have a super high metabolism
or
they binge and purge

Who ever said they assume thin people do not eat twinkies?
As I said before, I MADE THE TWINKIE COMMENT in RESPONSE to a comment that I feel is rude. I didn't say that I think all overweight people eat twinkies. In fact, I said my mother has a thyroid condition (therefore, her overweight status is not due to her love of twinkies, it is due to something out of her control!!!)
It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. I think this is being blown WAY out of proportion.

I never assume that and i'm not sure who did... but I know lots of thin people that eat bad.
It's all over tv, movies, etc... the very overweight guy sitting on the couch with a bag of chips, twinkies, oreos, etc. He's not eating a bag of carrots with fat-free dip!
