my dd was born in july
i put a onesie on underneather a sleep and play, along with a beanie and scratch mittens. she didnt need a blanket on top of all of that since it was july, but i would bring your own blankets just incase.

Re: sorry another coming home question
We did a short sleeve onesie under a jacket and footed pants and then a blanket over it. The hospital told us not to take the blanket so we had our own (of course I took the blanket too... just did it surreptitiously).
Oh, apparently we didn't have a blanket over her lol. And it was snowing (ever so gently) when we went home.
p.s.- I love this picture and can't believe it was 20 months ago now and we'll be bringing her brother home soon. Wow!!!!

I am a rookie here, do they need to wear onsies under all their clothes? Or is the onsie part of the outfit?

Someone told me that you dress babies in one more layer than what you would dress yourself. (Because you don't want to get too hot)

I didn't always put a onesie underneath an outfit. Actually, I rarely did that.
I'd bring a hat and your own blanket. You can bring scratch mittens, but not necessary.
When I brought my DD home (late September), she was in an outfit that was like a one piece outfit. No onesie underneath. We brought a matching hat and matching blanket. I dont think we had scratch mittens, but we did use those a lot in the early days.

You don't have to, buti did and still do for my dd who is just turned 1 and I plan to do the same with ds. I feel like the onsie holds everything (such as the diaper) in place. Plus if we were out and dd ever got her shirt wet, the onsie would remain dry.

When you sleep, the baby should be dressed in one layer more than what you're wearing to bed (and no blankets on babies -- you can swaddle though). DD didn't like to be swaddled so we usually dressed her in a onesie and then a sleep n play for bed. During the day she'd just wear a sleep n play most of the time. Newborns have a tough time regulating their body temp so you want to make sure they're warm without overheating them, which is why cotton onesies and sleepers are good. I would not dress a baby in fleece inside the house. It's just way, way too warm. But for going outside for a walk or in transit, it's fine. We usually would put a fleece blanket over her when we went outside in the winter. Once they get to 3 months or so, they don't need as many layers. I loved pants with feet because she was constantly kicking her socks off!

the hospital doesn't give you a blanket to take home.........
We forgot this with ds because he was in the nicu for 10 days... it was May 1st and the nurse put some sort of waterproof like sheet over to keep him warm in his carrier.

we never used scratch mittens. i would dress them based on the temperature outside, but it depends on how small they are. if you go early and they go home tiny (5lbs or less) they will need extra warmth so they don't lose calories keeping themselves warm. so i honestly would play it by ear. since its twins to begin with plan on getting NB size since they will likely be a bit smaller than the average baby. in late november i would probably plan to have a long sleeve onesie and a fleece/sweatshirt. or you can do a short sleep onesie and a warm sleep n play. then you can use a blanket or not use it based on the outside temp. ABSOLUTELY get hats. underweight babies can lose calories through their heads if they aren't warm enough.

Gina, I think the hospital gives you those side snap undershirts for the baby while theyre in the hospital, it's better since their umbilical cord is still attached. I left that on Joey and just put a one piece outfit on him, socks and a hat (u could do mittens if you want) - then I put him in one of those lighter type of snowsuits cause it was chilly. I used a blankie that matched his outfit but u can even use the hospitals.

I would also play it by ear a bit. DS came home on New years eve and I had a warm fleecy outfit all planned and it ws HOT...well hot for Dec 31st. DS was never in more than a under-onsie and fleecy footy pjs. He is a hot kid and would sweat like mad in anything more.
Each baby is different. I also never used mittens and onlt soemtimes a hat

Re: sorry another coming home question
We came home on a very very cold day in January.
They each wore a onesie and and outfit. The outfit had sleeves that folded over to make mittens. They each wore the hat that came with their outfit and the fuzzy one they got in the NICU. (haha I make fun of myself now). They had the blanket that they have on in the pic and I had another blanket covering the carseat when I brought them to the car because it was so windy and cold.
Hopefully the picture works!

A lot of the newborn outfits have little fold overs to cover the hands. If you can get outfits like this they are great bc no need for mittens! I had a hat on DS coming home at the end of august. The ac was on in the car so I wanted his head covered. I put a short sleeve onesie on under everything. My mom always said to put an undershirt on so I do this out of habit!

Re: sorry another coming home question
Most newborn outfits have the little hand covers built in. I liked them so much better than the scratch mittens because they could not fall off. I never put onesies on under outfits. My DD came home in a newborn sleeper with a hat and one of our blankets over her. It was March.

sorry another coming home question
G I got them very cute outfits that have pants with footies, a little top, and a cotton hat. Then, I bought them knit sweaters with a hood, and they'll have chenille blankets on top. I am definitely putting the cotton no-leg onesies on them. I will try both long sleeve and short sleeve... I have heard the long sleeved ones bind up under their clothes. We'll see. I am always going to have the white cotton onesie/undershirt on under them. I want to keep their diapers in place and mom says they absorb sweat.

Re: sorry another coming home question
My mom told me in regards to onesies that whatever you do, stick with it. I keep a short sleeved onesie under her outfits at all times in the cold months. I think for you, a short sleeved one is good enough. I really only used long sleeved ones if I wanted her to wear a short sleeved shirt over it.
For the blanket, bring your own especially if you are going to do hospital pictures. They do it on your bed, so it's nice to put something pretty down on the bed instead of a wrinkled white sheet.
Definitely bring a hat, even a few cute ones for their in hospital pictures. I never used scratch mittens. I actually brought a nail file to the hospital and carefully filed DD's nails down.

DS1 was a winter baby. I put a onesie underneath the sleep n play outfits until the weather got warmer. I have not done this with my July baby though I may layer with a short sleeve onesie once it gets really cold.
ETA: When DS1 came home, it was very cold. He wore a hat and a 3 piece outfit that covered his hands. I also had a very light snowsuit and a light blanket in addition to the car seat cover. I just used the light blanket to cover him when we went outside. It was way too much and he was sweaty by the time we got home.
