sorry, I should have clarified... $76K is the avg HOUSEHOLD income on LI

Living on $4K a month with a family of 4 on LI is really hard

g-d bless anyone that can do it- I doubt it's fun

How many of us complaining about the prices are a family of four..,.. Ill cross that bridge when I get to it..

were taking AVERAGE- that's the average family size

personally - I don't fall into the average category- and I am not rushing out to buy an over priced 40 year old- so go this really doesn't effect me either way-

I might buy a house herr next year- or I might move down to Florida- like the rest of my family- I hate the winter-

I understand average but who cares about average... Most people are 2 income families new home buyers with no kids. My point is yes the houses are over priced yes the houses stink. But people can afford them not all but if you want to you can.
Its what you really want..

I have been debating this alot with my friends lately. My reasoning for staying here is that my friends and family are here. What's the point of owning a brand new house if I have no one to share it with. Plus when you move out of state you don't know what the areas are like, what the schools are like, etc. (unless you know someone who already lives there).

And I don't agree that everyone on Long Island lives paycheck to paycheck to own a house.

well if the avg salary on LI is $76K and the avg house costs $422K, how is it that the average Long Islander buying a house today would not be living check to check?

thats with one person. thats about 4000k take home a month, approx. if its a 2 person income and they make the same thats about 8k a month. if you cant pay a mortgage on 8k a month coming in. Something is wrong

ok - a $300,000 mortgage is roughly $2,000 per month for 30 years at 7%.

$7k in property taxes = $583 more per month
insurance, say $200 a month.

now we are at $2,783 and we havent eaten, taken a shower, or used any electricity!

the average HOUSEHOLD income is $76k, which is about $4k a month as you said.

so you have $1,217 per month to eat, heat, drive to work. and dont forget, you put $99K down on a fixer upper, which will have a leaky roof, probably need a new boiler, etc.

seem more fair?

I also have a huge car payment that most people would freak over- but that is my choice-
I don't pay any rent and wont pay for any of the mortgage payment- some people are happy to pinch pennies- I never have been and never will be-

Seriously...I sit back and read the same debates over and over...

Yes, housing prices are high in LI/NYC Metro area...they're completely totally rediculous...

Do I hope the prices are going to go down...HECK YEAH!

Do I want to stay on LI...Of course! My priorities...(like what was posted somewhere in here...) is family! Sure...I could go to TX, GA, KS wherever and have a HUGE house, very cheap with cheap taxes...HECK...I could and do have that upstate, but I prefer the lifestyle on LI, the family here, etc.

So I'm staying...saving...doing whatever possible to keep us living here.

Like I had on my avatar...NY - Love it or Leave it!Chat Icon

and...as I posted on the guilty homeowner thread not everyone who cannot afford a home spends their money crazy.

I never said it shouldn't be - I just thought we were talking about the expensive LI housing market.
No one mentioned being a SAHM and affording a house.
Both of my parents worked throughout my childhood and I am SO happy they were able to do that as well. And that is how I plan on raising my family.

Again, these are all personal choices. None of them are right OR wrong!

as someone whose Dad worked 2 jobs and Mom worked 1- I don't think that is the answer

my Dad left my dance recitale to go sell a house- to pay for college, vacations etc

both my parents were teachers- never bought crazy things, my mom rarely got a new car and if she did she drove it till it died or one of us killed it

I would have loved to see my Dad more when growing up and when my Mom got sick she realized that she wished she would have been able to spend more time with the people who mattered- and not rushed back to work after having us- but she couldn't stay home- I would like to-

B/c average's are just that. My house cost less than the "average" and while my salary is less than the "average", combined we make close to triple the "average". You shouldn't look at what everyone else has but rather what you can afford. Jmo.

That's exactly what I would have said.

I agree, I lived at home till I was married so I never complained about the prices of homes till DH and I started to look for one..For awhile Id look at homes in TX,GA,FL,etc and think what pple put DOWN on their homes here could buy you great things somewhere else..but like Lori said, NY is what it is. There is still SOooo much land out there in other states so ofcourse houses will cost less!! In NY esp LI, land is scarce so you have to pay much more! I know pple that paid like $600k for the LAND and then only spent $300k for a HUGE BEAUTIFUL HOUSE!

DH and I would only leave if our family left, and I know thats not going to happen. So we are buying a house here. It is definitely NOT our dream home, but it was the area we wanted and close to family and friends which is our priority so we are beyond happy right now..I dont want a huge castle in another state w/o my parents or sisters around to visit.

We can complain all we want but the situation is what it is here, so we can deal with it however we choose or consider moving out of NY.

Re: Somethings gotta give, right?

We should also not generalize NY as being expensive- its just the areas close to the city. My DH is from upstate and his brother bought a beautiful house for 150k. His mortgage payments with taxes are almost half our rent on our tiny queens apartment.
So you could move upstate too, not just down south.

The house prices here are so frustrating they make me want to cry. I want to stay here because my friends and family are here but the fact combined we make pretty decent money and can't even afford to buy a decent house kills me. I always dreamed that I would get married, buy a house, and have kids. Now I don't think we can buy the house and if we do, I don't know how we would be able to afford kids as well. What kind of place is it where I have to choose between buying a house or having children?
