You absolutely did the right thing! Don't feel bad at all that DH is fightimg with his parents. He is doing the right thing and standing by his family. I think you handled it much better than I would have.

omg how horrible. speech is such a sensitive subject for me bc my dd has PDD NOS and has trouble communicating. Its just a shame that your in laws did nothing to stop it. I think you did the right thing by leaving. you have to set the example that its not right to do that even after you told him to stop.

Thanks so much everyone...you made me feel so much knowing that you guys would of reacted the same way. I told my DH i feel bad cause its the holidays but thats doesnt excuse the behavior of his family.

You have nothing to feel bad about, you did nothing wrong! I am so mad for you!!! I can't believe a grown man would mock his own 3 year old nephew, that is just disgusting. I am so sorry this happened to you and your son and that he was aware of what his 'uncle' was doing 
I too would be mad at my IL's for not telling him to STFU.
In my opinion, you handled yourself very well and got both you and your son out of that situation. I probably would have gone all psycho mama bear on him and caused a huge blowout!
