So I found out today...

that apparently the other RE at my practice (not sure if I mentioned this before but I just did NOT like her - will explain further down) was not so great with my embryo transfer.

Basically, my RE (whom I love) did my ER even though it was his day off, but when it came time for my ET he was on vacation.

The other RE at the practice did the ET. Obviously this was my first IVF so I didn't really know what to expect or what was normal/abnormal for the ET so whatever happened, I just assumed was okay because nobody said otherwise.

They had me take 2 Valium before the transfer and I'm a small girl so that kind of knocked me out. I literally feel asleep while waiting for the RE to come to the transfer, and then I was kind of out of it during the transfer itself.

So I find out today that the transfer - which is supposed to take around 60 seconds, took SEVEN minutes. The RE said it was very difficult.

Why didn't anyone tell me this before? MY RE (the one I normally go to and love) said that this is the only reason he can think of that this IVF didn't work. He said the embies were beautiful, my lining was thick, etc. He also said that this could explain the bleeding I had during the 2WW.

Anyhoo - I'm on schedule now for an FET.

PLEASE let this work. Our hearts (and wallets) will thank you immensely!

--

Oh, and reason why I don't like the other RE. I only met her 1x before my transfer and it's because my RE was on vacation and I needed to know if it was okay for me to get a lumbar epidural BEFORE my transfer because I have a bulging disk that's been causing me lots of pain. I had mentioned over the phone that I was very bloated, so she asked me to come in just to make sure that I didn't have OHSS and then she'd give me the okay for the epi.

The first thing she says (after introducing herself) is - "Wow, you look like you're 10!"Chat Icon

Another thing was "This is you bloated? My gosh, you're the size of my thigh" Chat Icon Chat Icon

Just kind of rubbed me the wrong way, KWIM? So I was upset when I heard that she'd be doing my transfer, but now even more upset that she did my ET, took 7 minutes, and probably bumped and scratched me all along the way (despite the fact that my IUI went completely smoothly!)

Re: So I found out today...

sorry that happened to you.

maybe before your FET you should ask your RE to do a "mock transfer" this way they know exactly what to do for the real transfer.

this helps them to know what size catheter and if there are any issues getting past your cervix, etc.

good luck for your next FET!!

Re: So I found out today...

They gave you 2 Valium????!!! Chat Icon Wow....I never heard of that and anyway, 1 Valium usually knocks a person out!

I know what you mean about not liking the one RE - I've had a few at my practice rub me the wrong way. And with all that time, effort & $ spent, you want to feel comfortable. Chat Icon

I think when I did my transfers, I would say they were about 5 minutes each...definitely not 60 seconds.

ITA w/ this. I would be wondering if there were any issues w/ my body that made it harder to do the transfer. Did they do a mock transfer already?

I can tell you that my first transfer took about 20 minutes. I expected it to take about 3... but the dr. (who is one of the head dr's in my practice, but not my dr) wanted to be POSITIVE that he found the exact right place to put them back- and kept loading 'blanks' until he could be sure he was putting them back in the right place.

My 2nd transfer took over 5 mins easily b/c he loaded it in, found the right spot, injected (he thought both) them in and took everything out thinking we were done, only to find that one of the embryos had stuck itself to the wall (embryology checked) and he had to do it all over again! Chat Icon So he put everything back in and we started from scratch for embryo #2. Chat Icon

I also agree with a mock (trial) transfer...When they did mine, they realized that they would need to use a different type of catheter for my ET because at the trial, the RE had difficulty...They also sort of "map out" the best route ( curves etc... inside of you)...i would definately ask why they didnt do this ( if indeed they didn't) Good Luck Chat Icon

Re: So I found out today...

I don't think it's typical for a transfer to take 60 seconds. I was awake during mine and it took a good 5 minutes for the procedure.

But, with that said, my RE wasn't at my transfer either because she was on vacation. Her partner did, however, start out with a mock transfer before doing the real thing, to make sure she didn't have to make any particular adjustments to the catheter.

Given your history, for your FET I would demand your usual RE, and also demand a mock transfer before Chat Icon

Re: So I found out today...

Ugh. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. That female doctor sounds like a real gem.

Is there anything you can do to ensure you don't have her for the FET?

I guess the silver lining in this is that you might have a reason that the previous transfer didn't work. Good luck with the fresh transfer. Do you have a timeline yet?

Re: So I found out today...

Some of what you were told doesn't make sense to me.
I've had approx. 20 transfers and they've taken anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. I was awake for every one of them so I know how long they took.
I know some RE's will put you to sleep for the transfer specifically so they can place the catheter high and deep to get the embies exactly where they need to be. And I know many people who have had success with this method.
As far as the bleeding...your bleeding occurred 10 days after transfer...doesn't make any sense. If I had any spotting after a difficult transfer (and I had quite a few), it was a day or two after.

I think it's easy to pin the blame on the RE, especially if you don't like her. But, the issues don't really add up....

The bleeding was 4 days after the transfer - but I hear what you are saying. I wasn't necessarily trying to place blame on the RE. I was just saying that I didn't like her to begin with, and then this made me feel that way even more.

My RE is doing a mock transfer before - that was first on his list of things to do for this cycle.

Re: So I found out today...

I had very difficult transfers during my IUIs, IVFs and my FET. My FET took 45 minutes and 5 cathetersChat Icon It was very painful. SIRM did a mock transfer during my ER and then told me that b/c I have scar tissue on my cervix it would be best for me to do the transfer under anesthesia. They told me its not the probing with the cathether its the cramping which can cause problems/prevent implantation. I had spotting 3 days or so after this last transfer also. So thats not necessarily a bad thing. Given the outcome I agree with my RE the cramping is what they want to avoid. So I would also say along those lines the valium was probably not a bad idea for you. Hopefully the mock transfer will help the RE out and at least let him note which cath to use. But if I were you I would not be opposed to taking the valium again.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd like to smack that rude doctor in the head for youChat Icon I agree with the previous posters. I wouldnt say my transfers took a long time, but they certainly didnt take 60 seconds either. One thing that your doctor said that I didnt like was that he feels this is the only thing he can think of as to why it didnt work. there are nine zillion things that could cause it not to implant. Have you had PGD? A chromosomal abnormality could cause it not to implant properly as well and would not have anything to do with the rude doctor's transfer at all. Sounds like he was "throwing her under the bus" for some reason.Chat Icon I dont know...maybe I'm just being cranky is allChat Icon

Re: So I found out today...

the commentary from the dr. was unprofessional. As far as it taking 60 seconds, I don't think that could ever happen. even with an iui it takes a few minutes to get set up with the speculum and the catheter. I havent' had a transfer yet, but I am going to and I know there is much more involved.

As for the valium, I have been given a rx for it and will take it before the transfer..I get cramping with an IUI, an IVF Transfer will not be more pleasant.

Good luck with your transfer!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks.

We didn't do PGD... it is $6k and we didn't have any family history or anything like that which would make us think we need it, KWIM?

I don't think he meant HER specifically, just that a difficult transfer could have maybe caused the embies not to be correctly placed? IDK.

And that has a medical degree? Personally, I think they should comp you some of the cost for the incompetence of their doc. Wonder if there is a lawsuit to be had. Probably not, but they can offer professional courtesy!

Re: So I found out today...

I am sorry you are going through this. I am not sure which RE practice you are using but things don't sound good to me. I have never heard of valium for a transfer and I have never heard of it taking 7 minutes. Mine was done in less than 30 seconds. You need to feel confident that you are under the care of experts on all levels. What happens if the RE you like has an emergency or is out of the office for you next transfer? The tranfer is the most critical part of the IVF process and should not be left in the hands of an incompetent doctor. I would consider changing practices if I was in your position. Sorry if I am being direct and I hope I haven't upset you. Best of luck!Chat Icon
