high -- great salary and high bonuses, hours can be flexible at times when needed, lots of vacation time
low -- long hours at times, work can be stressful with tight deadlines, etc., sometimes work is boring... billable hours, having to keep diaries, etc.

Re: since we're talking about jobs today....

highs: get to go to conferences in nice places and the university picks up the cost, flexibility in hours

lows: low pay, almost no recognition for your work, your experiments may not work out and you've lost a ton of time

This last one is why I can't stay in science. It makes me sooo nervous. So I'm leaving once I get my degree.

Re: since we're talking about jobs today....

Highs;
15 minute commute
I can make my own schedule as long as I work 8 hours between 6AM and 6PM.
If I work extra hours I can use them as "credit" instead of using vacation time.
STARTING with 14 vacation days and 14 sick days that I can roll over from year to year with a maximum of 30 vacation days BUT this will go up soon.
Scheduled cost of living increases, and scheduled raises.
I know exactly WHAT is expected of me at all times.
Opportunity for advancement
Job Security
I am helping people

Lows:
I will never be rich
It can get monotonous

Re: since we're talking about jobs today....

High: New surroundings and challenges every few months (no time to get bored), Good pay rate (and lots of room to grow), Fun people, Creating a product that lots of people will enjoy and getting instant feedback from some of those people.

Low: Instability- having to look for a new job every few months, No paid vacation or sick days and not always being able to take off for vacations.

Re: since we're talking about jobs today....

(neuropharmacologist- medical researcher)

highs: independence, academic freedom, respect, travel

lows: low salary, especially considering the amount of education (PhD)required, complete lack of job security, too highly competitive for anyone but the 10% to survive... all this amounts to TONS OF STRESS

It was bad before, but in the last 8 years, congress has cut funding to us soooo much that the best researchers can no longer even compete for grants. Medical research is basically collapsing... Chat Icon We can only hope the recent bill proposed to restore a fragment of funding passes congress now that things are different in DC. If it doesn't, our famous 'medical innovation' that the gov't always brags about will no longer exist Chat Icon

Well, I work for the Federal gov't so this could be the high-end info you can use as a bargaining chip Chat Icon for the first 5 years we get 2.5 weeeks, after 5 years we get 4 weeks, after 15 a little more than 5 weeks. Plus, all the govt holidays, and "credit time" which allows us to earn extra time off (and carry 3 days at a time)
