I agree with a lot of that - I do think parents in the last generation, especailly, have given too much to their kids & do not discipline them enough. JMO!

Seriously she has way too much time on her hands.... and SORRY but YES it is easy to comment on how "easy" it is to discipline a child when you have NO CHILDREN!!!

Although I don't like some of the choice words, I agree with most of it!
I think a lot of kids these days are spoiled beyond material things.
We were NOT allowed to watch TV during the day growing up. And when we did at night, we sat 10 feet away, and only watched shows that were approved (no Simpsons, Married with Children, etc.)
When my Dad said to sit in a chair - WE DID. No questions. Hands in our lap, legs crossed only at the ankles.
Saturday morning meant chores FIRST and play time later. Each kid had a room to clean and I mean dusted, vacuumed and the furniture polished.
Strict? Yes.
Loving? Yes!
Did I hate it them? YES
Do I appreciate it now? OH YEAH!
I wouldn't have changed it for the world and I hope to have the ability to raise my daughter the same!

I agree with some of that but also disagree
like Diane said .......if your kid is failing take away the phones etc
my 11 yr old is in middle school and doing really well but let me tell you if her grades started suffering because she was into electronics or tv more than her schoolwork she would have them taken away in a heartbeat
on the other hand my 6 yr old is what you call a "spirited child" she throws her little fits now and then and gets punished for them but it doesnt make gher stop doing them
they are completely different in thier personaslities so I feel it isnt fair to judge all kids the same way

Wow. That was just awful. I have to say that I used to agree with some of his points. I still agree with some - that you shouldn't buy kids everything they want, and that discipline is important. However now, as a mother, I realize that it's not always your choice how your kid acts and there is no way to "control" your 3 year old. And as much as I HATED hearing this before I had kids, I have to agree now that you just cannot possibly understand what it is like until you have one.

Wow - our parents must have been related - I was raised with the same rules! I was one of six & we all were disciplined like this w/o the use of physical punishment - a look from my father was all we needed to keep in line!

I agree with a lot of it (glairing exception would be that gay couples can't raise children - that's bs).
As a society, in terms of being too permissive, too accomodating with our children, I agree that the writer is right.
As for actually controlling a 3 year old in a store, I'll say wait until the person is a parent. I look forward to the looks (s)he gets from judgemental idiots like him(her)self.
My children's job is to want every toy & candy in the store. My job is to say no enough times that they won't ask anymore or, if they do, they ask with the expectation of a "no" answer. At 3 years old, they still thought they had a shot at it by crying or throwing a tantrum. At 4, they're asking for it for their next birthday or Christmas.

While I agree in the fact that a lot of parents now do not discipline their DC, yes they should not listen to their ipod while eating at dinner/restaurant......it is very obvious that a non parent wrote this.
I suggest the author of this email keeps a kid for about 1 month.
Then let's talk again!
