Yeah my daughter won't play with sticks or mud. And I can't say I blame her because I wouldn't either. I bring toys and distractions wherever we go for MY own sanity more than anything. Because if SHE is bored I suffer. At the beach for example if she doesn't have toys and things to distract her she will whine and bother me when I just want to relax and read. It's better for everyone if she has distractions other than looking at the waves or digging in the sand with her bare hands. She is also an only child and alone a lot when we are out so she doesn't have other kids to play with

Re: Silly "Is it us or them" thing...
My kids are pretty good at finding something to do in nature on their own(we spend a lot of toy-free time outdoors) but I totally understand many kids aren't like this. I don't think there is a right or wrong regarding toys. Even my kids would hover around the toys if available if we were outside. I think balls and frisbee type things are great to bring. I might get kind of annoyed in a group situation if someone brought legos and my kids were sittting and playing with those the whole time instead of interacting with the outdoors.

I thought about this also. They may have preferred if their kids weren't playing with toys, and wanted them to enjoy nature. If there were no toys, I'm sure their kids would have been fine, but of course they're going to play with the toys if they're there.

Silly
I keep toys in the car for my kids for any time we go anywhere, and pack a bag of toys if I know we're gonna be somewhere for a while, like at the beach or a family party.
