Personally, I'm not sure where I stand on the subject.
But in light of this Spitzer thing, it got me thinking...

Yes...I have thought this for a long time! Make it a legal business, collect taxes from the "employees" and make the girls and guys go for tests for sexually transmitted diseases at least 2 times a year

I say 100% yes. It works extremely well in areas where it is & honestly I'd like to see the woman & men that participate in it illegally to pay their share in taxes.
Its an enormous amount of money that if taxed could really help the rest of us pay less.
Testing for diseases is easy & accurate & it would benefit the woman & men working as prositutes now with safety & health issues.

moral issues notwithstanding (this is govt. not church)
it would free up police forces, put PIMPS out of business, be safer and cleaner for both the working ladies, the Johns (and anyone else that loves either group) and would provide the economy with untold tax revenue.
even during the Great Depression, people paid to get their freak on!
many other countries (and even some states) have regalized prostitution.
it is NOT the business of the govt whether there is a cheating or moral issue in terms of family. and legal or not, that problem will always be there.
Prostitution IS the oldest profession. it's not going anywhere.

Question... if it was legalized and taxed and so on and so forth, wouldn't that just encourage people to keep the business under the radar to avoid paying taxes?

I agree with all of these points. On a moral level, i'm totally against the act of prostitution, but i also believe in a TRUE separation of church and state, and there's no legal reason that i can think of for why it shouldn't be allowed.

its the world's oldest profession---and it will always be around. legalize it and we could make some revenue off of it.
heck---look at reno! that cathouse---those girls are clean (checked weekly for STDs and monthly for HIV) and its regulated there. if they regulated like that all over--we could get some serious tax revenue from it.
