Should Prostitution Be Legalized?
This was the topic on Penn&Teller BS! this week, so I'm wondering what you think.
There are a lot of arguments for and against. It's an interesting issue.
I mean you can sell everything else you can do with your body... and the brothels in Nevada have done very well without crime, disease,etc associated with street prostitution.
However, even if we wanted to have these legal brothels, it would be a "not in my back yardA" mentality.
And the women who couldn't get a job at a brothel because of drugs, etc would still be hooking on the street with all of the danger of violence from pimps and johns.
It's an interesting question.

Hmmm...very interesting.
I think if it was legal...it would be in our face everywhere. I don't need to see dirty hookers walking around while I'm going for a walk with my son.

Well making it legal would:
1) take it off the streets
2) Make it regulated to stop the spread of disease
3) Stop women from being under the control of pimps
4) Increase tax revenue

Well that's part of it. If it were legalized it would probably, i think, move more toward the brothels in NV, not streetwalkers on suburban cul-de-sacs.

IMO, no matter how much legalizing prostitution would bring regulation and more "safety" to the "profession", it's the simple fact that prostitution is immoral that should keep it illegal.
And, like you said, illegal versions of it will still continue.

Hmmmm.....
good question. If it will take it off the streets and make it safer for women who chose this as their profession then I don't see why not. I mean they do whore houses and all that anyway the illegal way!

If we're legislating morality, what struck me is that pronography is legal. That's having sex for money on camera..doubly immoral.
And then there's the question of whether we should be legislating morality

since this is what my husband deals with at work, he thinks it should be legal so that it would be easier to regulate and he's tired of wasting time putting the exact same people back in jail- very unproductive use of his time.
my answer to him is always
If we legalize it, we're saying its OK and its NOT.

Fair enough!
I mean even if our laws are inconsistent, there's a definite argument in favor of NOT legalizing something just for that reason, or legalizing something we, as a society feel is wrong just to legalize it.
There's also the argument that the illegalization of prostitution is more dangerous than prostitution itself. It certainly wastes police man hours. But these women are subject to violence because they can't go to the cops if a pimp abuses them and they get raped and murdered because they have to hide in the shadows to conduct business, wheras modern legel brothels have cameras and heavy security.

I could have wrote this word for word. DH thinks that it would make it better work wise...but I argue that if it was legal he would then have to regulate how a brothel is being run...is there any empolyees or customers under age...that sort of thing.
