I was just thinking - I am not doing IUI right away, we are trying a few cycles "naturally" first.
Do you think maybe thats why it wasn't suggested?

Nonetheless, I am still going to ask for it tomorrow.

No, I don't think that's why it wasn't suggested. That was the first thing my regular GYN wrote a prescription for. And our course of action was to try naturally for 3 months before moving to IUI.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

As far as Jules is concerned - her decision in the long run is hers and hers alone. I think people were trying to point out to her, though, that even though she has a son - there could still be blocked tubes. AnonMom has that situation as well as a friend of mine who had a three year old son, wasn't getting PG and after HSG discovered she had a blocked tube.

The point is, if you are going to spend the time and effort - not to mention the $$$ - on treatment it's better to know if that treatment is going to be effective.
If your tube/tubes are blocked you can have 100 IUI's and they won't work.

The original poster asked if an HSG was important...it is.

Excuse me?!
I never said you were an ignoramus - where does it say that in my post?
There were a few posts stating that the OP wanted an opinion and I was directing my posts towards them....

I beleive I said the final decision is yours.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

My very first test after 6 months of TTCing was supposed to be an HSG. But it turned out I was pg (naturally). So I never did the HSG.

I miscarried.

Then I continued to TTC on my own.

After 6 months I asked for CD3 bloodwork. Turns out I had high FSH.

1 IUI, and 2 IVFs later -- I have DD.

I think the HSG is minimally invasive and necessary. If you are having problems conceiving, that is usually the first test (depending on age).

It's like having a mammogram -- before directly asking to be treated for breast cancer, IMO. Or something like that, but I think you get the gist...

my comment wasnt directed at gerty actually....and i apologize for that.
i will not apologize for my feelings however. and apparently since i cant express my feelings without getting "pointed out" thats not "sharing opinions and experiences"

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

Jules - I think you are taking this the wrong way. What we are all trying to say is that an HSG is a very important test to have if you are having such problems with conceiving that you are on an IF board. If you are putting yourself through the emotional stress of clomid with IUI and both your tubes are blocked, what is the point? We are not getting at you, but with respect most of us on here have gone through or are still going through this painful journey, you are relatively new to this board and we are just trying to save you some pain. That is just my opinion, if you don't want to do the test then don't. We are all just trying to help, thats all.

Well said. I agree, I don't think anyone was saying you are wrong for not having it done. Like Cat said, it's a personal decision. The OP asked if it was an important test, and we're just saying that it is. Nobody is judging you for not having it done. That's your own personal decision.

i think that if you arent afraid of the test and your doctor provides you with valid reasons for it you should.
i personally do not want one. i have a son already, and my RE does not feel it is necessary at this time and respected my decision not to have one. as i have said many times before, i am not willing to go as far with treatment as many of you are.

but the HSG is not treatment? I absolutely think everyone should have it, unless you are goign right to IVF.

Why waste the money and emotional energy on treatments without knowing if there is even a 1% chance that it may work. If you know its blocked then you deal with that, but why waste all the time, energy and money not knowing.

Was this necessary? Why is she not allowed to have her feelings about a test for her body but you can say what EVERYONE should do..

Chat Icon

I think everyone was just stating their OPINION on the subject, which is what the question asked Chat Icon

Hey lisaChat Icon

I am just saying how come how Julie feels about her body and her decisions was attacked saying she is wasting time enegry blablabla..

Everyone's body is different and everyones emotional state is also.

She is allowed to not want to test and not get told What is right about it..

Capise?

Of course it is her right to choose not to have certain testing but I have issues with Dr's that would do treatments without this vital information. Fertilization happens in the tubes(except for IVF) If your tubes are blocked fertilization is NOT happening. That is not an insult it is just a medical fact. I wonder if her Dr is aware that having blocked tubes also increases the chance for ectopic pregnancy even with IVF? He may or may not. I have been shocked at the levels of knowledge of certain Dr's.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

Also in regards to the issues Julx and others are raising with the HSG.

Its not a TREATMENT...Its a TEST..its An Xray.

If your doing any type of treatment....Clomid, Injectables, IUI etc...Then you should have all the tests done before hand IMO ( and I would hope any knowledgable Dr. ) to rule out any reason for the treatment not to work.

I dont get why anyone wouldnt do the tests that are neccesary and just Rush to treatment....in any form....

treating someone when your not 100% sure of the causes is not good practice.

Thats my own opinion on the matter. So, yes everyone should have an HSG if you plan to treat your IF beyond simple "timing" of intercourse.....

This thread is totally irking me...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Nowhere did the original poster ask about opinions or feelings...she asked if the HSG is a test that is necessary. The overwhelming response is yes...many women have discovered a blocked tube or tubes via the HSG.

What each individual decides to do is up to them...but forgive us for trying to educate anyone so that they don't waste months or years of their lives trying to do something thats not going to happen.

Jules - If you opt to not get the test, that doesn't make it right...just makes it your decision. And the OP asked what the best thing to do was.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I agree with what most people on this board are saying. The HSG is very important. But the one thing that gets me is the drama. I am pretty new to posting on here. I read the drama on some of the other boards, but I just feel we are all sharing something and are on a painful journey unlike any of the other boards. Even though everybody's journey is different we can all relate to each other on some level. This should be a place where everybody feels they can come and find support and not be ridiculed for what they write. For the most part I think everyone feels they find a lot of support here. Jules I do think you took Gertyrae's comment a little too personally, but again i'm not in your shoes.

Let's just all get along!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

IF THAT IS THE CASE THEN WHY ALL THE COMMENTS ABOUT WHAT I CHOSE TO DO??? NO ONE EVEN KNOWS THE DISCUSSION BETWEEN MY DR AND MYSELF OVER THIS AND I HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO NO ONE.
DO NOT WRITE TO OTHER PEOPLE ABOUT MY SITUATION. IF THE GIRL WHO ORIGINALLY POSTED THIS WANTED TO KNOW WHY SHE WOULD HAVE ASKED ME WHY.
I NEVER ASKED FOR EDUCATION THE ORIGINAL POSTER DID. IF I WANT KNOWLEDGE ILL GO TO MY DR NOT ANYONE ON HERE. I CAME HERE FOR ADVICE AND SUPPORT NOT TO BE SINGLED OUT FOR A DECISION I MADE.

No one is singling you out. We are all speaking of a medical fact that if you are going through fertility treatments you should have an HSG. Thats it.
