Should everyone get an HSG?

I know some of you have mentioned your RE never did an HSG and you had a blocked tube, hence not being able to get pregnant.
Is this a test that should be done at the beginning? My RE hasn't mentioned it, and I was wondering if I should bring it up at my next appointment.
I haven't had a full cycle so far, just finished 50mg of clomid and am going for my sono/bloodwork on friday.
I have PCOS, and ovulated for the first time on my own last month since Feb after being on Met. 1500mg for three and a half months.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I believe everyone should get an HSG early on in treatment from an RE. It is an important diagnostic test that can reveal many issues that would otherwise not be detected and that could be impacting your fertility. I'd say ask for it at your next appointment!

As long as I put it off, before I made the switch to my RE I had it done. ITA with Carolyn

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

IMO...yes. It should be one of the first things that are done.
You will find out if your uterus is shaped correctly and there are no large fibroids and you will be able to make sure your tubes aren't blocked.

As I've said many times, I asked RSNY to do an HSG numerous times and they told me I didn't need it, I was a classic case of PCOS. Lo and behold, when I did have the HSG - my tubes were blocked. I spent a year at RSNY and many, many $$$$ with no chance of a result.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

i think that if you arent afraid of the test and your doctor provides you with valid reasons for it you should.
i personally do not want one. i have a son already, and my RE does not feel it is necessary at this time and respected my decision not to have one. as i have said many times before, i am not willing to go as far with treatment as many of you are.

I agree that it should be done also. They are usually scheduled around CD7-10.

I definitely recommend getting it done. It was one of the first tests I had before I even starting cycling.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I guess after my experience I feel strongly that everyone should have one done early on, regardless of previous children.

When my son was 6 months old we started trying for number 2. After many wasted months at one RE who never did it, we switched RE's. The 1st thing our new RE did was the HSG and we were pregnant the next month. We wasted a full YEAR with the 1st RE. (edited to add, that 1st RE got 4 IUI cycles out of us, which never worked because of my blockage, my husband and I both always felt he just wanted the $$)

GOOD LUCK

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I think an HSG should be one of the first test an RE gives you. No matter what you do short of IVF you will not get pregnant if your tubes are blocked and why waste time.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

Thanks everyone. I am going to tell them at my appointment on Friday that I want one done.
I only have a limited amount of money from my insurance for IF, so I don't want to be wasting it if I have another problem..

but the HSG is not treatment? I absolutely think everyone should have it, unless you are goign right to IVF.

Why waste the money and emotional energy on treatments without knowing if there is even a 1% chance that it may work. If you know its blocked then you deal with that, but why waste all the time, energy and money not knowing.

ok so i mixed words....i dont want it as part of my testing. and i think i made it clear that it is MY PERSONAL OPINION. obviously i am not the norm, however how i chose to do my treatment is my own decision. if i want to "waste" time and money hey, thats my choice.

Was this necessary? Why is she not allowed to have her feelings about a test for her body but you can say what EVERYONE should do..

I think everyone was just stating their OPINION on the subject, which is what the question asked Chat Icon

Hey lisaChat Icon

I am just saying how come how Julie feels about her body and her decisions was attacked saying she is wasting time enegry blablabla..

Everyone's body is different and everyones emotional state is also.

She is allowed to not want to test and not get told What is right about it..

Capise?

she could do whatever she wants...nobody is telling her what to do...only our opinions...from people that have had this experience

but the point was, and not just for Julie, that this is a simple diagnostic test that could save a lot wasted time and money...take it from someone who has been there Chat Icon

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I got one and it wasn't painful at all. Everyone is different and has a different experience. I think it's a good test and can bring you closer to finding out an answer.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

IMO it is a simple test that is very important, my first RE didn't send me for one and I did numerous IUI not knowing I had blocked tube. It wasted my time, energy emotions and money. I personally feel it is an important part of the diagnostic process of IF. No point in doing IUI's if both your tubes are blocked.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

IMO the first two things that EVERYONE should have done if they are having trouble is a Semen analysis and an HSG.

In that order.

Re: Should everyone get an HSG?

I was just thinking - I am not doing IUI right away, we are trying a few cycles "naturally" first.
Do you think maybe thats why it wasn't suggested?

Nonetheless, I am still going to ask for it tomorrow.

IMO, if you are on the IF board, you should have an HSG
