Short term memory after labor?

I swear I feel like I lost a piece of my brain when I gave birth. I have such trouble remembering anything. I am not tired, or exhausted and yet I still can't focus or remember the simplest things.

I sat down at the computer to google "memory loss after pregnancy" and for 5 minutes couldn't remember what I wanted to type!!

It is really becoming a problem! Anyone else experience this? I thought mommy brain was just a funny term b/c moms are so busy but I feel like I have a serious condition.

Short term memory after labor?

I think it's partly due to exhaustion b/c even if you don't feel tired, you now have another person to look after besides yourself which can be mentally exhausting. Mommy brain is definitely real!

I agree with this. I think when you have a newborn you run on adrenaline, so you may not feel exhausted, but your body and brain and working overtime and the non-essentials get lost along the way.

It's called mommy brain. Its due to exhaustion, being interrupted 405646 times, constant worrying about your children. Not sure if it's a medical condition, but it's VERY real! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh sure I remember when...

Wait.. what were we talking about?

In all seriousness I HATED that memory loss. I'm proud of my steel trap mind for details and numbers, then that thing I've always relied on was gone. I'd stand in a hall forgetting where I was going and it upset me terribly.

Still it did get better but also never the same. Its like my mind has made space for my daughter and never given it back. Ironically she's the one with rock solid memory now. She remembers conversations, people, places, things and details from over a year ago.

Short term memory after labor?

Yes this is very real. It cleared up 6-8 mos later. I would feed her and not remember the last time I fed her? My days and hours were messed up. Everything blended together. Was the last time she pooped really this morning, or was that yesterday? Things like that.

Short term memory after labor?

My short term memory always sucked, but since having DD (over 24 months ago), it's gotten worse. Even if you think you're not *thinking* about anything that's distracting you, you are. It stinks and I've learned that I have to write EVERYTHING down, or forget it.

Short term memory after labor?

My daughter is 2 and I still suffer from this. I officially write EVERYTHING down. I had to get a dry erase board to remind myself of stuff... EVEN things I need or want to do for the day!!! At one point I was concerned that something else was going on but apparently a lot of women go through it... It makes me feel stupid sometimes...

Short term memory after labor?

LOL How crazzy!!! At least I am not alone but this is horrible!! Totally makes sense that I am tired when I don't realize I am so tired and also I am constantly thinking about 20 things at one time. I hope eventually this passes b/c if I ever have a second child my brain may turn to goop LOL
