Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

There was a thread a few weeks back, asking if you put back the shopping cart when leaving the market, or do you leave it where you found it

Spinoff - when getting a shopping cart - do you go to the central area where they are kept and put the quarter in that little slot

or do you grab the first idle one you can find

first idle one i can find--if its out in the middle somewhere--i figure i might as well use it so no one bumps into with their car or anything.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

I haven't seen the quarter in the slot carts in a few years. I don't think it panned out the way they hoped.

Most of the time, I grab a stray cart. I figure that it's one less cart that is "wandering" around the lot, trying to ding someone's car.

Similar idea to bottle deposits. There was a lock on the handle that you put a quarter in to unlock it. When you returned the cart to lock it up again, you get your quarter back.

yeah - our market has this thing where the carts are all chained up so that you can't steal them

you put a quarter in and it releases one

when you are done, you put it back and it releases your quarter

If I had to pay to rent one I would get it from the rack but otherwise, if there is a cart avaliable by my car when I pull in...I will take that one.

Johns Farms has that deal..I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

I've never seen a quarter for a cart, but to answer the question, it depends on which is closer. If there's an empty cart right near my car, I take it. If I'd have to walk across the parking lot to get to a stray cart, I'd rather go to the front of the store and get one from where they're supposed to be.

The Waldbaums and BRU by me both have the quarter for a cart thing. I try to find a cart that is in the parking lot. If not then I pay the quarter and sometimes put it back in order to get the quarter back.

The waldbaum's by me has that quarter thing - I think it's supposed to be an incentive to return the cart instead of leaving them stray in the parking lot so other cars get damaged.

I usually grab one from the corrall and return it to the corrall. Sometimes I give it to someone headed in that direction and let them keep their quarter.

I've never been anywhere that I had to pay for my cart Chat Icon I just grab the first one I see. If it's raining, I will go inside and try and get one.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

Very common in Europe. People used to steal the cart to go home and leave them everywhere.

To answer the Q. Quarter or not, I return my cart to the "designated" area. I can't stand wandering carts around my car so I don't do to other either.

I grab a cart from the parking lot, and if none, I grab it from within the store, esp if it's raining, so it's not all wet and squeeky.

Same here, the Waldbaums by us has had the quarter for a cart for over a year now and it seems to really work there, almost everyone returns their cart.

At my local supermarket we have to pay £1 for a cart, and its a pain in the arse. But there are never any free ones, so I always pay. I have this little keychain with a pound coin sized metal disc that I can use...it looks like this, so I never have to use real money.

If I had to insert a quarter, I'd go to a different supermarket Chat Icon

I never have any change in my purse, and I find that quarter thing very annoying.

That will show the cheap b@stard managers who try to save a buck by avoiding hiring a cart guy.

Yup, I used to shop there!! I used to have a quarter-sized disc that would do the trick and I'd get it back when I returned the cart.

Now that we're in Ronkonkoma we go to Stop&Shop and they don't have it there. We go inside to get a cart and then return it to the closest return area in the parking lot.

We don't usually have many stray carts but if there's one where I pull in then I'll take it to get it out of the way.

My DH always puts the cart back, and we get our cart by the door of the market.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

I get it from inside the store. Their are very rarely carts left in the lot by the supermarket. Their is a person who goes around and collects the renegade carts and brings them back to the store. When I am finished with my cart I dont have to really worry about it because the cart person is not far and will take it for me. Plus Publix has a service that they walk with you and your groceries and help you load them in your car and then they return the cart for you (and you are not allowed to tip. It's a service they provide)

We dont have the quarter thing.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

I still don't see how a quarter is going to keep people from stealing a shopping cart. But to answer your question, I almost always take one from the front of the store. If there is a stray cart on my way from the car to the store, I will grab it.

Re: Shopping cart etiquette - spinoff to a topic a few weeks back

Before DD was born I always returned the cart to a designated area, be it a corral in the parking lot or the front of the store. Now however if I am alone with her I try to park next to a stray cart so I can just stick her in it without walking too far, and then I leave it where I found it when done. I will not leave my baby alone in the car to return a shopping cart.
