I'm going to be honest and tell you as a construction worker myself I find this post to be hurtful. These people are human beings. What would you like them to do?

Really? Yes they are human beings however would you want 10 - 15 strangers a day using your bathroom for 2 months? I dont care how clean they are, you dont know them and there are germs/diseases to consider. She is ready to give birth and has a small toddler. Why should she have to contend with cleaning her bathroom everyday after a parage on strangers have been using?

IMO any reputable construction company would not have a problem with a porta potty. I know mine did not.

ETA: They work for you, I would just say that your bathroom will be off limits period.

Re: Shoot me now...construction crew question

Having worked in the construction field myself, I am not insulted at all by you suggesting a port-a-potty. I don't blame you at all for not wanting that many people traipsing through your private space after just giving birth. I didn't want to see people I knew and loved for a few weeks pp, never mind clean up after their pee and poop. That much use for an extended time can really do a job on your plumbing as well. Add the fact that a potty-training toddler cannot wait for a bathroom and I think there really is no other choice here.

I'd re-offer the port-a-potty. I can't imagine if it's on the property, that the workers would pee in your backyard or go to the diner rather than use the facility you've provided. JMO

eta:
for those of you that said to let her give them access to her facilities.....do you think she should make her fridge and microwave available as well? Just another way of looking at things

This is what I was trying to say. I think the guys would use the port-a-potty. I think the owner is just trying to get out of paying for one or telling the OP that she has to pay for one.

Bonnie-Jean, sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I supervise construction projects and have received complaints about all kinds of things the guys do. It all depends on how the company is run. Like every other profession, there's good and bad.

Might i add that the people on the job were not from this country. from a country that doesn't FLUSH TOILET PAPER. Yes, that's right... poopy toilet paper put in the garbage pail that they do not dump... yes, that's the disgustingness of what it can be...

let them supply the porta potty.

For the record, I am happy to pay for a porta-potty and that was made clear.

Jessee I would go ahead and get it, I am sure the workers would appreciate it. nevermind what the boss/owner is saying, when you gotta go you gotta go and not for nothing that is very disturbing they would even suggest using your bathroom only when YOU offered to pay for it as well. some nerve!

You are going to be having a baby during the process, do they not get it? no way would I let those germs come in and out with a newborn. I cant even believe they suggested using your bathroom under these circumstances!

good luck.

I hear you. I've had to walk several blocks in all the boroughs just to find a bathroom that someone would let me use, never mind the condition of what they let me use. Walking at 6:30am in the Bronx and finding the shuttle to Rikers was a joy though.

I understand the OP POV, I really do. I just don't see it as such a big deal. It is her choice to have the work done and the bathroom issue should have been brought up when contracts were signed, not at the last minute. That is poor on the part of the company.

If the timing of her construction is an issue, fine, but her choice in the end.

I'm also not going to debate this with anyone else since I feel that it will bash all parties even further so have a great day folks!!

I should add that this was discussed at the time we signed the contract but there was some confusion (caused by DH Chat Icon ). When we signed, we discussed this - the President of the company said we could get the porta-potty but none of the crew would use it. We said we would think about it. When he left, DH said to me , "I don't see the big deal - they'll be going upstairs". To me, no issue whatsoever. I even brought this up again to DH last week when we got our start date, and he made me feel like a fool again, swearing my personal facility would not be used.
Needless to say, 2 days later, the contractors called to say they would be shutting off the water upstairs and that's when DH realized I was right. He assumed, since they're not doing anything to our upstairs bathroom, it wouldn't be a problem.
He brought up the issue with the contractor and got the same response about them not wanting to use the porta-potty.

ETS: Also, when we signed the contract we were told there would be no issue in having this project completely by my due date and that we would be started by the first week of September - so, at that time, there really wasn't too much concern that I would be sharing my bathroom with the crew, NB and toddler.

For a job that big, I would insist they bring a portapotty.

For my side extension on my house, they didnt have one so yes they were using my bathroom. Chat Icon I should have told them to get a portapotty.

When I do my full dormer on my next house, I will insist on a porta potty.

I always assumed a porta potty would be brought in. I would not want a construction crew using my bathroom thought the time of construction.
1st thing I thought of...is the cesspoolChat Icon we would have MAJOR issued with that many people using our bathroom for a long period of time.

Expect that your house will be nasty while this is going on. Whenever I've had ongoing work done they always use the bathroom and are not usually neat about it. But it's better than them peeing in your yard, which is what I caught my neighbor's siding guy doing in her yard!

wow, they should have made it very very clear that the water would need to be shut down before those contracts were signed and being discussed

I am sure you expressed your concerns wanting the work done asap since the baby will be coming before the work is complete, they know you may have been staying in the home during the process- you have a toddler-

and if the water is going to be shut off, how the heck are the guys suppose to flush? they are going to use your bathroom like a porta potty but they wont use an outdoor one!Chat Icon
I would complain bigtime- they should be paying for it especially since the water needs to be shutoff and they not YOU should worry about their workers going to the bathroom not you.

Jessee they work for YOU, you tell them what they are to do.

if you decide to get the porta great if not you tell them they must go offsite if they need to use a restroom, and to make you feel better tell them your doctor said it is not safe for the baby.
what an arse this company is!

If you didn't have kids, I would say to just make it very clear that this is your HOUSE, and that the bathroom's sanitary conditions are to be respected.

BUT, since you have kids, I think all bets are off. You don't want people you don't know in and out of your house all the time. You have no idea who these people are. Let them get offended. It's MUCH better to be offensive to someone and to be sure that your kids are safe. JMO.

Honestly, I wouldn't do the work now if you are that concerned about having them there when you have a newborn. I wouldn't want workers in my house period around that time anyway. Can you postpone the work?

Hopefully it won't be that bad. Luckily, the bathroom is down the hall from the stairs, so we'll have to put down something along the trail (maybe a drop cloth) so they don't track crap all over my floors. I don't have many personal items in the bathroom - it's mostly in my linen closet across the hall.

I think at this stage I'll suck it up and see how it goes. If I bring baby home and it's too disgusting, then I might have to ask them to go out for the bathroom - explaining the newborn in the house.

This sounds like a good plan and you might be pleasantly surprised too. My crew came with their own dropcloths, swept and vacuumed at the end of each day. They totally gutted a bathroom. With the door closed at night you didn't even know constrution was going on - they were that neat and clean. When they moved upstairs for the dormer, same thing - they put dropcloths on the stairs even though I told them we were replacing that carpet and not to worry. Someone referenced a crew of 10 - 15 traipsing in and out of your bathroom. If the crew is that big I think they'd be done in a week, not two months. Our crew of 2 - 3 guys was not even noticible as far as using the bathroom - kept it clean and I rarely even noticed that anyone was in there (despite the fact that I kept them supplied with coffee!)

I would have no problem letting them use the bathroom, however I'd probably just pay to rent a porta potty. I always feel bad for people who work in an area that doesn't have access to restrooms. That must suck.

Re: Shoot me now...construction crew question

I agree that you should insist on the PP; you will be bleeding and will not want to be rushed, or to be cleaning the bathroom extra. I barely wanted family members in the bathroom after I had given birth, much less strangers! I would probably just tell the contractor exactly that! The gross out factor should be enough to get them to use the PP, not to mention being considerate of a post-pardum mother.

Re: Shoot me now...construction crew question

We just had work done on our house and they used our bathroom. 5-6 guys were at our house each day.
It's not like they'll be constantly in there. At the end of the day, I wouldn't have even known they were in there if I didn't see them go in myself.
It didn't bother me and I never thought about not allowing them to use our bathroom, but I don't know what it's like to just have a baby. Your situation is much different.

BTW, I think it's pretty ballsy for them to say that they WON'T use the porta potty and just go to a diner.

Get it anyway if you really feel uncomfortable with them using your bathroom. If they have to go that bad, I'm sure they'll use it.
