She HATES the car seat, will this last?
DD is three months and has always hated being in her car seat, she screams and screams when she's in it. She's a squirmer, so I assume she hates being confined to a seat? Once we get on a highway she's calm and fine for the most part.. but all of the stop and go and lights to get there makes her scream bloody murder.
It's gotten to the point where I have to sit back there with her, she definitely deals with it better not being alone and i'm able to pop back in the paci which calms her.
Will this last? Anything I can do so that I can leave the house alone with her and not dread the bloody murder screams?

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
Well, DD still hates it BUT she can keep the pacifier in now so she is more likely to fall asleep once we get going!
Putting her coat on her and then putting her in the car seat is enough to send me into a panic, but I try to do it as quickly as possible and then she is okay usually. I am dreading when she has to go in the convertible car seat, I can't imagine dealing with that stuffed into the back of a car!
ETA: When I am alone I just crank up the music and drown her out LOL

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
I hope it doesnt last. DD is 5 months and STILL hates the carseat. Streets, highways, doesnt matter she is always crying. She does sit ups to try to break free. I dread going out now. I talked to my ped about it, she was stumped. I talked to everyone about this and no one had any solutions. I bought every toy out there. I changed her into convertible seat. I tried CD, music, static stations. nothing worked.
I take her out almost everyday and same thing happens. The only thing I can figure is that when it gets towards her naptime, she is worse. IT's like she doesnt even know she can sleep there so she just cries until we reach our destination. once we're there shes all smiles again. I'm hoping she will outgrow this....

DS never liked the car seat but it got better once we switched him to a larger one. I try to give him some toys to distract him.

This was Jack. I HAD to take him out of the infant seat at 2 months because I couldn't drive like that. He was much happier in the convertible carseat (and so was I )

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
I have to sit back there with her still at 6 months. She will just cry and scream. When I drive alone she sometimes screams but I can drown it out. My dh can not and gets frazzled. I hate the back seat b/c i get nausea but Id eal with over fighting w/ dh. She's been better lately. I may try the front seat again soon.
Sorry tis is no help but I assure you you are not alone.

I do that too.. and feel less guilty when it's cheery Christmas music.
It's the absolute worst driving around with her like this! At one point, when we hit traffic on the highway and she started to scream I drove on the rumble strips on purpose to calm her down and it worked! <DH loved the idea of what this could do to the car but I needed peace!>

It is, because they aren't as squished. It's just more of a pain in the butt for us. I couldn't take it with Jack though, I was heading down the path of getting into an accident because I had so much anxiety every time I drove with him. I was constantly pulling over to get him to calm down. It was not fun at all.
Also - do you have a mirror that plays music? Fisher Price has one that is really good. Let me know and I can find it for you. It also comes with a remote control so you can just keep playing it over and over and over

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
I am happy to say that no, it does not last. DD broke out of it about 4.5 months. I think getting the mirror to see her helped because she likes to look at herself. She also started to understand how to play with toys and that helped too.

I have used the rumble strips too before they are godsend when there is traffic
other idea -is white noise - find a non-station and play static
good luck

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
DD#1 HATED rear facing. If I was in the car with her alone she would basically cry/scream almost the entire time. When DH and I would drive together one of us would sit back there with her.
She wasn't happy until we turned her forward facing at 1yo (regulations were forward facing at 1yo and 20lbs then)

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
Oh I've written many posts about this! DD HATED the car for a long time. At 6.5 months she's now beginning to "tolerate" it more. Even her pediatrician was very surprised when I told him how she screams in the car (yeah-real helpful he was! lol). I didn't drive alone with her for a very long time and anytime DH drove I had to sit in the back too. The first few months we had to pull over A LOT so I could take her out and soothe her. She would scream while the car was moving, at red lights....always. It was soooo bad at times that I would ust start crying myself.
I tried every toy, car mirror, music...everything! 2 weeks ago I bought some Bright Lights carseat toy at Target that lights up and plays music and I must say-she is very entertained by it. That toy combined with her just getting older (and me learning to just ignore her whining!) has helped us get out alone a lot more.
Good luck...I REALLY know what you're going through.

This is similar to the one we had. Go to BRU or BBB and see which FP model they have in stock that has a remote. It's a huge help!

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
My DD screams when we are putting her in her jacket and then again in her carseat, she hates being squished!! Once I out her in and lock her in I pop in the pacifier and she usually stops crying right away. If we are stuck in traffic she cries sometimes, its the worst when im alone... I get panicked and dont know what to do!!
90% of the time though she will fall asleep within 5 minutes of starting to drive.

DD HATED the infant seat, but is totally fine in the convertible. We ended up switching her at 6 months and it was like a different baby. I wish we had done it sooner.

So glad to read this post and see that my DS is not the only one that loathes the car seat. I always get panicked when I have to drive with him by myself and now I dont miss any bumps on the street and also drive on the rumble strips whenever I get a chance as well! DH is always making fun at me for trying to make the baby happy and in the mean while destroying our car!

Putting her coat on her and then putting her in the car seat is enough to send me into a panic
Me too
DS actually got A LOT worse about this in the last month since it's been so cold and I put a heavy jacket on him. We actually switched from the children's place 3 in 1 jacket that I thought was SOO great and warm to an osk kosh jacket I found at Marshalls that is sort of shiny so his arms slip in easier.
Then when we finally get to the car he locks his legs and refuses to sit. I do this horrible thing to make him sit- I tickle him so he loosens up and then I kind of pull his legs out from under. I feel guilty every time but otherwise he WON'T get in the car seat. (Well, he actually doesn't refuse EVERY time- probably about half the time).
Sometimes in the morning when I need to drop him off to MIL so I can go to work I feel like I'm about to really lose it. I get SO anxious and miserable knowing facing this craziness and horror is that last thing DS will remember of mommy until a million hours later when I get home from work.

Re: She HATES the car seat, will this last?
It gets better with time. DS hated his car seat. Still does some days. When he was smaller he would just wail the whole ride unless I was back there.
Now as he is a bit older (5.5 months) he is much more pleasant. I mean he has his days where he goes crazy till he falls asleep but those days are few.
I made sure when we went out that he was fed and changed so that he wouldn't have an extra thing bothering him.

I totally agree. DS HATED the infant seat and would cry hysterically in it. Like Diana, it would make DH and I soooo anxious driving with him. I was always afraid it would make me get into an accident and many times DH and I would end up bickering in the car from the stress of it all. When it was both of us in the car, either DH or I would always sit back there with him to try to calm him down.
Now that he's in the convertible seat he's much better because 1. he's not as smushed as he was in the infant seat, 2. he is sitting up straighter (he hated being reclined), and 3. he can see a little better out the window. I also have the FP mirror that plays music and that helps A LOT. I also leave him a bunch of toys to play with on his lap. If nothing else works and he still freaks out, then I just give up and turn the music on loud to drown out the crying. Sounds mean, I know
