Self Pity- Is this even possible?

The day I gave birth, I had weighed in at 30 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight. I gave birth that day (c-section). My daughter was born 7lbs 11 oz- almost 8 pounds. 3 days PP, I had only lost 8 pounds. Essentially just the weight of my daughter... Chat Icon

I am exclusively breast feeding too and I just expected a few more pounds to be shed immediately.

I still look fully pregnant and it doesn't help that the scale confirms that!

Did this happen to anyone else? I am almost 5 days PP and still nothing else has been shed. I still have at least a full 20 pounds left to lose.

Is there any hope this will go away naturally on its own any time soon?

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

Congrats on the Chat Icon .

You have to give your body some time. It's only been 5 days and you probably still have a lot of fluid left in your body. Also with c-section (at least I have been told) it takes a little longer to shed the weight. Don't stress about it and when you fully recover you can start working out and feel better about yourself. For now enjoy the baby and forget about everything else.

That's exactly what happened to me when I had DS. I was completely bloated from all the fluids. Give yourself some time, and the weight will come off.

This. Focus on your new precious baby and in time, the weight will come off. It hasn't even been a week!!

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

Step away from the scale.

It will take awhile to get back to pre-pg weight. For me, it was exactly 6 months pp. Keep in mind that your body is going to hold some fat hostage so it has something to burn for BFing. Don't eat junk food, but don't diet - your body needs the calories to make milk. Drink a lot of water. You just built a person, so cut yourself some slack. It will come off.

ITA. Plus if you had a c-section a lot of it could be water weight. I don't think the swelling really started to subside for me until 2 weeks PP and didn't completely go away for 3 months.

I don't normally call people out, but that was unnecessary. Have you dealt with postpartum hormones yourself yet? If you have then you must have had one easy ride, kudos to you.

To the OP, I didn't even step on a scale for several weeks and even then I think I was only down 17 lbs. I was EBF and expecting the weight to "melt" off like I had read so many times. This wasn't the case for me, it was a slower process.

Right now epecially you're still full of the IV fluids they gave you, it's going to take some time work its way back out. I would steer clear of the scale for now and concentrate on your new arrival. The hormones in the first few weeks can make things seem much worse than they are! Congrats on your little girl! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

Congratulations on your new baby! 5 days old...yay!!

You had so much extra fluid pumped into your body due to the c-section, and you are probably more swollen after pregnancy than during. My legs and feet were HUGE when I came home from the hospital. It took a week for the swelling to go down.

I didnt even look at a scale for at least 2 weeks after I came home from the hospital. I let my body do what it needed to do. And even then, I was still wearing maternity pants at 6 weeks pp, because they were comfortable and didn't irritate my c-section scar.

I gained 35 lbs. Lost all of them by 3 month post partum, and 6 months post partum I was 10 lbs below my prepregnancy weight.

Give yourself some time and enjoy that new baby of yours!!

It's fine if everyone wants to jump on me, but I have no problem saying that it's kind of ridiculous that she's complaining about not losing the baby weight in a matter of days. So many of her pregnancy posts revolved around weight gain, and I think it's a tad bizarre to be so focused on that when there's a newborn in the picture. Crucify me all you want.

she isnt saying that she is surprised she didnt lose it ALL, she is shocked she didnt even lose what would have been placenta and amniotic fluid.

honestly, if I gave birth to an 8 lb baby (which I did Chat Icon ) i too would be shocked and also a bit down if I didnt like more than 8 lbs. hormones also do some pretty crazy things to you.

you are oozing, and leaking and in pain and tired and overwhelmed and underwhelmed and delerious - just about everything "gets you a bit down" Chat Icon

Self Pity- Is this even possible?

During a c estion they pump you with fluids.

You need to worry about the baby and taking care of yourself not about the weight. it will come off. Give it time.

give your body time and don't go on the scale for at least a month. Your body was pumped with fluids like pp's said. Congrats and enjoy your baby...your body will go back slowly.

Self Pity- Is this even possible?

It took 10 months to gain all that weight. Give yourself at least that. It may not take you even half the time. It may take you twice the time. No one looks at you once you have a baby. They look at the baby (and can you blame them?). Deep breath and concentrate on being a mommy for now. The weight will come off with some time (at least most of it -- I held onto 10 lbs and then got pregnant again when DD was a year old). Just keep yourself healthy and well-fed so you can do the same for your daughter. It's all good! You're doing a great job!

You def have fluids still in you. I didn't have any swelling at all during pregnancy and when I came home my entire right leg was swollen and I had no ankle. It went away yesterday....don't deprive yourself of water either BC you feel "heavier".... Drink water even though it seems like it will make things worse, it's what your body needs. it will get better

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

I agree with the others, you need to step away from the scale. 5 days PP is nothing. Your body has been through a traumatic experience and needs time to heal.

Pregnancy/Post-Partum hormones really can make you focus on seemingly strange things. I can vouch for that.

OP - I felt the same way (although I don't think i weighed myself until about 1w pp). I had been pumped so full of fluids and was so swollen that it really was impossible to tell anything. It will come off. And yes it's frustrating because ppl will tell you things like "oh you lose at least 10-15lbs immediately when you give birth" - that's not really true in all cases.
Congrats!!! Chat Icon

I'm with you. When I read 5 days pp, I thought she must have written it incorrectly. It's definitely an odd focus to have FIVE DAYS after giving birth.

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

alright some of you ladies need to be a little more sympathetic to the fact that she has hormones raging 5 days pp along with being sleep deprived.....yes op you definitely have to realize you will continue to lose from this point on slowly and when you finally hit a plateau you'll most likely be ready to diet and exercise anyway so dont worry so much about it now even though you might be disappointed dont let it bother you yet because you have so much time to lose what you want when you're ready.....and as for those that don't have much support to give, try to remember what it feels like to be 5 days pp before making such snap judgements and those that have no idea what it feels like to be 5 days pp i think you have no room to judge in the first place

Re: Self Pity- Is this even possible?

I was devestated when I left the hospital 3 days PP at the same weight! Don't worry, I went on to lose 20 of the 30 in the next 3 weeks.
