Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
I know this has been asked before but I am looking for specifics and no need to name the school.
For Ex: How many kids in your school?
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School?
Is there armed security at your school?
If so how many?
Are there metal detectors?
Do kids have to show school ID to access school?
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place?
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school?
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids?
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc?
Anything else?
TIA

For Ex: How many kids in your school?
Grades prek-5. Approximately 500 kids
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School?
Elementary, within NYC
Is there armed security at your school?
No
If so how many?
Are there metal detectors?
No
Do kids have to show school ID to access school?
No
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place?
Just a lock, but I do not believe they are locked
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school?
It's NYC so the security is School Safety through the NYPD
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids?
Yes
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc?
I've never been really in that situation, but we sign in at the front door.
Anything else?
TIA

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
How many kids in your school? over 2000 students
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School? HS
Is there armed security at your school? We have a school resource officer (NYS Trooper) If so how many? 1
Are there metal detectors? No
Do kids have to show school ID to access school? No
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place? Standard push lock
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school? We have off duty and retired city police officers on campus at all times.
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids? Not very regularly. We have pep rallys and some assemblies at the beginning of the school year and around the holidays.
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc? Before 8 am, most doors for the school are wide open. Literally anyone can walk in. After 8 am, they lock all the doors in the school except for the main entrance. At the main entrance, people have to show their idea in a breeze way before entering the actual school building.
Anything else? My school has a “See Something, Say Something” program that they have been promoting It also has several mental health services to better assist students.

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
How many kids in your school? I want to say 400-500 but I’m not certain
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School? Elementary, kindergarten thru 3rd
Is there armed security at your school? Yes
If so how many? 1 SRO, but my kids school is close to 3 other schools ((like it’s on the same campus, so they each have an armed SRO and obviously closer than other police officers.
Are there metal detectors? No
Do kids have to show school ID to access school? Not at the elementary level
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place? I was surprised to find out the classrooms are not locked, and it’s something I have reached out to the superintendent about.
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school? They regularly have coffee with cop days, they also will have stronger presence randomly and they are trying to get live feed set up from each school directly to the department. They are also who is running security and updates throughout our district.
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids? Yes, 1x a month we are invited to an assembly. This month they just added another one bc our highschool has had a graffiti threat.
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc?
I have to buzz in and say where I am going, the teacher also has to make it known that I am volunteering that day if I plan to go further than the front office. I then have to scan my license and get a yellow print out that I need displayed before walking the halls.
Anything else?
I feel that my district highschool is very secure, I don’t think our elementary and intermediate and middle schools are as secure and it’s something I am fighting for.
ETA: the school has an anonymous tip line that anyone can text that is police monitored 24/7, and they promote see something say something, they would rather spend time making sure things are ok, then someone to think they are wasting their time. They also just hired mental health specialists for our assembly next week along with some extra officers to speak to kids and parents about any concerns.

Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
I know the original poster probably meant no harm, but if one of these were where my kid went to school I would be pissed!
This is a public board and you have no idea if this type of information would get in the wrong hands!
I highly suggest this be taken down ASAP

No school district info is disclosed. And these questions can be posted without revealing where you live. No reason for it to be taken down.

Exactly. The actual procedures the schools won’t disclose to the community bc they fear it getting in the wrong hands.

Nobody has mentioned the name of the school or even the town. None of this information can be harmful...some if our posters aren’t even on LI

Those poor Sandy Hook parents. I don't care how anti-gun they are, I bet they all wish they had an armed security guard at the door that day.

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
How many kids in your school? 300
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School? Elementary
Is there armed security at your school? No
If so how many?
Are there metal detectors? No
Do kids have to show school ID to access school? No
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place? Just a lock...locked at all times when students are in class and when class leaves for lunch etc. If child leaves for bathroom etc, door must be opened from the inside by the teacher.
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school? No
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids? Yes. Definitely need a security plan in place here
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc? Buzzed in, second set of doors in vestibule, one is always wide open and then you walk 20 ft to sign in and get a badge. Obviously I feel more needs to be looked at here, I’ve voiced my concerns.
Heartbreaking that this is reality of school for our children. Really. I’m at a loss as to what is the ‘right’ thing to do or the ‘best’ way to prepare. Between me being very against common core and very uneasy about the school world my child has to deal with, I’ve been strongly considering homeschooling. NEVER in my life had I ever thought I’d have to make a decision on for my child. Again, heartbreaking

Yeah.
Look at the UK. They have had a total of ZERO school shootings since 1996 when they banned guns following a mass school shooting in Scotland.
This is what I wish our country would do. Respond immediately and effectively so this NEVER happens to any child again.

Because Americans are dumb. We used to be considered a powerful, smart nation - now I feel like we are the laughing stock of a country that just can’t get anything right. Sometimes too many opinions and too many rights are a hindrance.

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
DD isn't in school yet, but here are the specifics for the school I work in:
How many kids in your school? 1,100
Is it Elementary, Middle or High School? Middle
Is there armed security at your school? Yes
If so how many? 2 or 3.. at the front entrance
Are there metal detectors? No
Do kids have to show school ID to access school? Yes
How do the teachers lock their classroom doors? just a lock or do they have a more robust system in place? Regular lock. All doors open with the same key
What is the involvement if any of the local police force in your kid's school? They sit at the front and get involved if there is ever an issue. I work in a good school and the kids are generally well-behaved. Security has a pretty easy job here
Do you have general assemblies at the school regularly - parents and kids? No
Do you have to jump through hoops to get access to the school or do you show your face and they buzz you in even if you are holding boxes...bags..etc? They stop everyone who walks in the door and makes them sign in to get into the building. Unless you are a teacher, or another adult who is there on a daily basis, you must sign in.

Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
Who cares what security measures are at your school? I think part of what Parkland shows is that there is always a way around security measures. Most of the successful school shooters have gone to the school. They know the security measures, and they've figured out ways around them before they arrive. The shooter knew when the school gates would be opened to start letting people leave the school, he knew when kids would be going outside to change classes, and he apparently knew that pulling the fire alarm would override the lock down. No matter what security measures you take, there will always be a way around it, or the shooter will just choose a different venue - maybe instead of during school they'll go to a school event. I'm not saying security measures are pointless, but I don't want my kids to feel like they're going into a prison every morning to learn.
The real issue/problem isn't that schools aren't secure enough, it's that people who have all the red flags for violence still have access to guns. Domestic violence is one of the biggest indicators of having the potential for becoming a mass shooter. If you look back at all the past shooters, almost all - if not all, have a history of domestic violence, but they're still allowed to buy guns. The gun lobby wants people to believe that any regulation is a violation of the 2nd amendment, but that's just ridiculous. We need comprehensive national gun reform with reasonable restrictions - extensive background checks, waiting periods, training requirements, storage requirements, etc. Make it so people have to put some work into owning a gun and make sure they take the proper precautions when they do own one.
All the rest of our constitutional rights have reasonable restrictions. The right to free speech doesn't include hate speech or speech that incites violence or obscenity. You can't yell "FIRE" in a crowded place because your free speech right doesn't override the people around you's right to not be put in harms way. If you go through the bill of rights, every right has reasonable restrictions put on it which are typically justified by whether your personal right outweighs the cost to society as whole (Or in the case of abortion, there are restrictions up the wazoo because women shouldn't really have any rights over their bodies). I think in the case of guns the cost to our society justifies reasonable restrictions on the right to bear their arms.

I'm completely agree. I think school security can be tightened up but what we really need is comprehensive gun reform. The problem is the 2nd amendment zealots think that means banning all guns. Why someone needs an AR-15 is beyond me.

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
I think if Sandy Hook had armed security, it may not have mattered because that kid had a better weapon if I recall correctly. Same for Parkland- I am not excusing those officers who failed to act- but what do you expect when you can legally buy a weapon that's more powerful than what most officers carry? Are beat cops going to begin carrying assault rifles now?
I know it's not realistic and I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I see no reason why an average person needs firepower like that. Handguns, rifles, sure. Leave the heavy duty stuff to LEOs and military.

Re: Security at your kid's schools - Specifics
In newsday today it was reported that Miller Place hired armed guards.
I think this is just a way to make people feel comforted that something is being done. Realistically I don't think one armed guard with a hand gun would be any match for someone storming the school with an assault rifle.
