Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

This is a great thread. I am seeing all the ways that I could potentially be raising a brat and now I know what to do to curb those behaviors. Thanks. Chat Icon

And kudos to the OP for actually coming out and saying what so many mommies are afraid to say!

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

this is my fear with the reward method...that they will come to expect a reward EVERY TIME they do something.

i was rewarded if i got high marks on tests or my father would bet me to read some book, etc. but i never grew accustomed to receiving a reward.

You're doing the right thing!! Your son will learn and Im bookmarking this for the future. In a way, I think most kids at this age are bratty and will challenge their authority. You're recognizing it now and changing it. Hang in there!!

This is the best advice! I know it's so hard to say no and listen to the crying, whiney, etc that follows but if you just say it once or twice they get it. I know some of my friends think I'm strict, but I think saying no sometimes is important. I don't think I'm "strict" I just have no problem saying no when I think its appropriate. I pick my battles, but once I say no I stick to it - even if DC drives me batty after.

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

they're all brats at that age....

Aidan is an only child and was the only grandkid for SEVEN years... he got EVERYTHING he wanted... (still does)

He turned out pretty ok.

Jack is so cute, its probably hard to say no Chat Icon

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

I'm scared of this too... Not so much regarding toys... he has a ton... but doesn't ask for something EVERY time we go and USUALLY accepts no when he does ask. More so with him being so demanding in other ways and me jumping through hoops to try to make him happy and avoid horrendous melt downs. I want to do it, no I want you to do it, I want the orange cup, no I want the blue cup, the sky is blue, no it is green... Anything to be difficult... Luckily, he took to potty training pretty well and we didn't have to do any type of rewards. I definitely see how the toy for every poop could backfire... but we do the best we can do and take it from there... Trial and error.

I don't know where the line is drawn between just the age and spoiled brat. I wish I knew and I am scared of raising a spoiled brat too.

Good luck! Stay strong!

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

Thanks everyone!

This morning I asked him to try to go poopy. He said the usual "Poopy gets a toy" - I said, no - since you are so good at going poopy now you can get some Skittles instead. He followed it with "No, poopy gets a TOY" -- I repeated it again. He pooped, and got Skittles. No word of the toy again.

This is going to sound crazy but I feel like I'm dealing with an addict right now, and I need to help him to realize that he has a problem. Chat Icon The entire way home from school he was saying "Santa brings me toys" over and over. I just made the music louder and louder. I told DH we are not to mention ANYTHING about toys anymore.

We wouldn't talk about how delicious beer is to a recovering alcoholic, we cannot talk about how Santa is going to bring toys to my toy-obsessed 3 year old. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

I think a toy for every time he poops is excessive. I would just do a reward chart - which would teach him patience and persistence as well. Then as the reward, just do something special instead of getting him something....KWIM?

I was DESPERATE after three months of pooping in his pants. And, I soooo thought little dollar store tricks would have made him happy...not created a monster :(

It worked!! It made him poop on the potty, and made him happy....and now you can adjust that and it looks like you have, I think that's great!

Re: Scared I'm raising a Brat

What we are doing from now until xmas is every time DD sees or asks for a toy she has to write it on her list and that way she can ask santa for it. I told her that if we buy any more toys between now and xmas that santa will fly over our house and think its a toy store and not a house where a little girl lives as she has so many toys already. She believes me so I am sticking to that story and she is getting into the whole list thing - it might work and at least buy you some you some time between now and the holidays!!
