To be fair though - I have sometimes been at store and gotten an important work call that I have to take and also need to check out ASAP. Granted, I have never snapped my fingers at anyone. But if I have a business call I am going to take it - perhaps it is rude but I am not risking my job.

I would hope you'd finish your call before trying to order and call at the same time, though. I get important business calls all the time, but honestly, I'm not so uber important that I would SNAP at someone and point to what I wanted so I could talk on the phone and get my order in at the same time.

ETA - and to be honest, my important work calls require concentration. I couldn't give 100% to the work call while I was also trying to silently place an order.

I was thinking the same thing. I set the call aside for a minute or I step aside when I am on the phone in public. I wouldn't get in line or stay on line if the call had to be taken right that second. I can't have two conversations at once.

Tell your dad to simply hang a sign in the store that says "We have the right to refuse service to anyone on their cell phones"...

A bagel store here in town, has that hanging on their wall, right behind the cash register and I don't blame them one bit.

People can be so rude.Chat Icon

Re: Rude Rude Rude

Rudeness is everywhere and it is mindboggling!

I worked in a restaurant. A family style steakhouse.

Rude doesn't even *BEGIN* to describe what some people put me through. Name calling, cursing, rudeness, snapping, yelling, you name it, I endured it.

Prolly my worse experience is as follows:

A family, after waiting a long time for a table, sits in my section and orders several apps and one dinner, plus drinks. They never told me they wanted the apps first then the single dinner, so everything came out together. Since it was a busy night, the food was taking a while, but I kept assuring them it was coming out. After apparently waiting TOO LONG for dinner after waiting an hour for the table, the father, in front of his wife and teenage children, proceeds to call me every name in the book, complete with curses, threats of physical violence, and then attacked my personal appearance. My bosses gave him 25% off his bill for the "inconvenience." I was in tears. He threw a ripped dollar bill at me when he left.

Top THAT. Chat Icon

I think it is extremely off-putting when people are rude to waiters, deli workers etc. And isn't it a popular dating advice to check out who your date treats people in the service industry-waiters, coat check girl etc... Very smart advice it is!

I have a friend who I wouldn't normally characterize as rude at all.... however i've noticed that whenever we go to restaurants, he's always rude or cold to the waiters. I think he thinks that they're there to 'serve' him and they're not worth his time. It's really offputting and i've definitely altered my opinion of him because of it.

Some people just don't get it.. be nice and treat people as you'd want to be treated.
I'm sure all those 'rude' people would be the first to scream if you treated them half as badly as they were treating you!

I dumped a guy b/c he called the coat check girl a "effing stupid b1tch" b/c HE lost his tag thing and she wouldn't give him his coat until the club emptied out.

it's such a disrespect...and if he can say it to HER when he's ******, what is to stop him from saying it to me.

to the OP...if it wasn't my dad's store, I would have snapped and pointed to the door Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon but I am sure you are more inclined to eat it when it's your families bread and butter.

Ok, first off is this Furci's If so how I miss this place since I have moved. DELISH. OOOh, So could go for some Creamed spinach right now too.

Anyhow. I worked in retail and had a man snap AND whitsle for me to help him. I looked right at him and kept doing what I was doing. He came up to me and said "Did you not see me" "I said I did, but last I checked I had two legs instead four". He called my district manager on me and complained. I smiled and said have a nice day. Chat Icon Screw that. I was out of retail shortly after that.

I never implied the I was "uber" important but important enough that I have to be available pretty much all the time to give to go ahead on important transactions etc. While I would NEVER snap at any one or anything of the sort (I am actually an incredibly polite and well-mannered person), I can remember one specific instance where i was at CVS had just stood in line forever to buy a giftcard, had to go pick up my DD from school, and as soon as I get to the front of the line I get an important call - that I HAD to take. I also could not get out of the line because I could not be late to pick up DD. I was not rude to the cashier in any way but I did carry on my conversation and pay for what I needed. If people have a problem with that - so be it, but my DD and my job are more in important than a conversation with a complete stranger at CVS.

I am a guilty cellphone user Chat Icon

but on the flip-side, I would NEVER EVER snap my fingers at anyone, under any circumstance...

If I was waiting to be served, my conversation would be put on hold while I order, not the other way around.... if it was an important (i.e. business) conversation, I wouldn't be standing in a store, I'd be sitting in my car in the lot.

I worked in retail for years, and was verbally abused on an hourly basis Chat Icon it was really stunning to see how people think they can treat shop-workers. I used to console myself by thinking 'at least I don't have to go home to them' Chat Icon after all, some poor person does Chat Icon

I agree with you. Some things are more important. I think everyone recognizes that the situation you describe is way different than the situation that happened to the OP!
